Modified semantic feature analysis for anomia: a single case study.

Semantic feature analysis (SFA) is a treatment approach designed for patients with lexical retrieval difficulty caused by semantic deficits. During training, a structured framework (e.g. requiring the patient to name the category, function, and colour of the target items) is usually provided to facilitate the patient in thinking of the semantic features of the target items. Nevertheless, the use of a structured framework potentially limits the variety of semantic features activated for lexical retrieval. This study investigated the effectiveness of modified SFA training to address this potenti

Poverty, Toxic Stress, and Education in Children Born Preterm.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth, defined as birth before the completion of 37 weeks of gestation, is a multifactorial global epidemic with psychosocial, economic, and physical ramifications affecting the child, family, and community at large. Toxic stress-the results of exposure to adverse childhood experiences-results in changes to brain structure and function that negatively affects future health. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to apply the eco-bio-developmental (EBD) model of poverty and preterm birth to the cross-sectional data of the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health to evaluate

Detection of movement onset using EMG signals for upper-limb exoskeletons in reaching tasks.

BACKGROUND: To assist people with disabilities, exoskeletons must be provided with human-robot interfaces and smart algorithms capable to identify the user's movement intentions. Surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals could be suitable for this purpose, but their applicability in shared control schemes for real-time operation of assistive devices in daily-life activities is limited due to high inter-subject variability, which requires custom calibrations and training. Here, we developed a machine-learning-based algorithm for detecting the user's motion intention based on electromyographic si

GSTO1 acts as a mediator in sodium fluoride-induced alterations of learning and memory related factors expressions in the hippocampus cell line.

The mechanism of GSTO1, as a high-risk factor for neurological damage, in sodium fluoride (NaF)-induced learning and memory impairment remained still unclear. Hence, in this study, we used the siRNA-GSTO1 HT22 model to explore the effect of NaF and siRNA-GSTO1 on the viability, and proliferation rate of HT22 cells, as well as the mRNA and protein expression levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element binding protein (CREB), neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), stem cell factor (SCF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The results of MTT showed that 10-3, 10-4, a

Subject-Aux Inversion in Children with SLI.

An elicited production study investigated subject-aux inversion in 5-year-old children with specific language impairment (SLI) and 2 control groups, typically-developing 5-year-old children and 3-year-old children matched by mean length of utterance. The experimental findings showed that children with specific language impairment produced subject-aux inversion in yes/no questions significantly less often than either of the control groups. However, the fact that lack of inversion is reflected in the input led to the proposal that children with specific language impairment choose the most econom

Influence of Gerontology Services on the Physical and Psychological Health of Elderly in the City of Zagreb.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the quality of life as an individual perception of personal position in the cultural and social system within an individual's environment. Elderly people, in general, prefer to live in their own home as much as possible, and moving means for them losing social relationships, changing routines and lifestyles and losing independence. The research aimed to gain insight into the use of gerontology services for the elderly people, their availability, diversity of information, a range of services they provide, and impact of these services on qu

Referential Cohesion in the Narratives of Bilingual and Monolingual Children With Typically Developing Language and With Specific Language Impairment.

Purpose The study explores referential cohesion in the narratives of bilingual preschool children with typical language development (TLD) and with specific language impairment (SLI). Referential cohesion requires integration of multiple discourse factors and is expected to pose a challenge for children with bilingual SLI due to weak proficiency in both languages. Method Narratives were elicited from 45 bilinguals speaking Russian as the home language (L1) and Hebrew as the societal language (L2; 15 with SLI), 20 Hebrew-speaking monolinguals (10 with SLI), and 20 Russian-speaking monolinguals (
