The Progression of Developmental Language Disorder Terminology: A Scoping Review of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Journals.

PURPOSE: A 2017 CATALISE project resulted in consensus on using the term "developmental language disorder" (DLD) to describe children with unexplained language impairment. Since then, it is unclear how researchers have identified DLD and implemented DLD terminology. The current study is a scoping review to better understand the implementation of DLD terminology. METHOD: We identified studies (N = 265) published in American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) journals between 2017 and 2024 that included individuals with communication difficulties in the area of language not secondary to

Examining Potential Mediators of the Relationship Between Developmental Language Disorder and Executive Function Performance in Preschoolers.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to examine potential mediators of the relationship between developmental language disorder (DLD) status and executive function performance. METHOD: Participants included preschoolers, of whom 80 met the diagnostic criteria for DLD and 103 were categorized as having typical language abilities. Participants' nonverbal IQ and receptive vocabulary were assessed via standardized tests, and their executive function was tested using the Dimensional Change Card Sort. Maternal education was collected via caregiver report and served as a measure of socioeconomic stat

Perceptual weighting strategies of adolescents with normal hearing or cochlear implants.

The distribution of perceptual attention across the myriad acoustic properties of speech undergoes developmental shifts through the first decade of life, changing from a focus on dynamic spectral structure to other kinds of temporal, amplitude, and static spectral properties. These developmental changes accompany a gradual enhancement in sensitivity to phonological structure. A central question concerning spoken language acquisition by children with hearing loss who use cochlear implants (CIs) concerns how they navigate these developmental changes and what effect signal degradation has on deve

The robustness of speech-like vocalization in typically developing infants and infants with autism.

BACKGROUND: Human infants produce speech-like vocalizations ("volubility") at very high rates, 4-5 per minute during waking hours across the first year, far exceeding rates of our ape relatives. AIMS: We document volubility in 127 typically developing (TD) infants, 44 with autism (ASD), and 21 with non-autism developmental delay (DD) through longitudinal recordings and human coding. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Families of 302 infants (110 not yet diagnosed or with other diagnoses) supplied 8.6 all-day recordings across the first year. Trained coders analyzed 21 randomly-selected 5-minute segment

Early Manifestations of Neurodevelopmental Copy Number Variants in Children: A Population-Based Investigation.

BACKGROUND: There is clinical interest in recognizing copy number variants (CNVs) in children because many have immediate and long-term health implications. Neurodevelopmental (ND) CNVs are associated with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conditions typically diagnosed by medical practitioners. However, ND CNVs may have additional, early developmental impacts that have yet to be examined in unselected populations. METHODS: Carriers of known ND CNVs were identified in 2 UK birth cohorts: ALSPAC (Avon Longitudinal Stud

The story so far: scoping review of narratives in deaf children.

Narrative language samples can be used to measure language development in children, but research on narrative development in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children is scarce, limiting knowledge of developmental stages and best practices for collection and analysis. This scoping review included 39 articles that explored recent methodologies and achievements in oral or signed narratives of DHH children, including comparisons with hearing peers and within-group analyses of early auditory experience, device use, and other measures. Articles featured DHH participants aged < 4 to 18 years, varying

Evaluating the Construct Validity of Sentence-Focused Diversity Measures With Late-Talking Toddlers and Same-Age Peers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the construct validity of three sentence-focused diversity measures, intransitive verb diversity, transitive verb diversity, and third person (3P) subject diversity, using two methods: (a) group differentiation of late-talking (LT) toddlers from peers with typically developing (TD) language and (b) associations with established measures of language development. A secondary purpose was to determine whether 3P subject diversity was more strongly associated with intransitive verbs than transitive verbs. METHOD: Examiner-child language samples fr

Neuropsychological Tests of Memory, Visuospatial, and Language Function in Parkinson's Disease: Review, Critique, and Recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD) is a key non-motor complication during the disease course. OBJECTIVES: A review of detailed cognitive instruments to detect mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) or dementia (PDD) is needed to establish optimal tests that facilitate diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature review of tests that assess memory, language including premorbid intelligence, and visuospatial domains (for tests of attention and executive functions see accompanying review) to determine suitability to assess cognition in PD. Neurodevelopmental challenges at age four following fetal exposure to maternal opioid maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: The impact of intrauterine exposure to maternal opioid use disorder (OUD) and opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) on child development is not fully understood. This population-based cohort study investigated the neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcomes of four-year-old children prenatally exposed to maternal OMT, hypothesizing greater challenges compared to their same-aged peers in Finland. METHODS: Children with intrauterine exposure to buprenorphine±naloxone or methadone (n = 123) were compared with typically developing children (n = 434) using standardized language, motor-perc

Cross-Situational Statistical Word Learning in Late Language Emergence: An Online Study.

PURPOSE: Cross-situational statistical learning is one mechanism by which typically developing toddlers map words to referents. Yet, this type of statistical learning has been found less efficient in children with developmental language disorder (DLD). The purpose of this article is to evaluate cross-situational statistical learning in very young children with language delay, late talkers (LTs), compared to typically talking toddlers. We predict that LTs will show inefficiency in cross-situational statistical word learning similar to older children with DLD. METHOD: LT (n = 15, 18-34 months)

Challenging Case: 2 Year Old With "Autistic Behaviors".

"George" is a 2-year, 9-month-old boy who presented for Developmental Behavioral Pediatric evaluation with the concern of global developmental delay and autistic behaviors. He had been receiving early intervention support since he turned 2 years, receiving a parent coaching model with a developmental specialist.During the clinical interview, parents endorsed limited expressive language skills and felt that his receptive language outpaced his expressive language skills. They reported consistent response to name when called and integration of eye contact and other nonverbal gestures (e.g., point

Context Shapes (Proto)Conversations in the First Year of Life.

Speech development occurs in highly variable environments; however, little is known about the effect of situational context on emerging infant vocalizations. At 4 time points (4, 6, 9, and 12 months), we longitudinally measured vocalizations of 104 White infant-caregiver dyads (41 girls) during three play contexts: book-sharing, toy play, and rattle-shaking. The frequency of infant vocalizations differed between contexts only at 12 months of age. Meanwhile, caregivers systematically spoke more frequently during book-sharing than in other contexts from 4 months of age onwards. Book-sharing elic

DNA binding and mitotic phosphorylation protect polyglutamine proteins from assembly formation.

Polyglutamine (polyQ) expansion is associated with pathogenic protein aggregation in neurodegenerative disorders. However, long polyQ tracts are also found in many transcription factors (TFs), such as FOXP2, a TF implicated in human speech. Here, we explore how FOXP2 and other glutamine-rich TFs avoid unscheduled assembly. Throughout interphase, DNA binding, irrespective of sequence specificity, has a solubilizing effect. During mitosis, multiple phosphorylation events promote FOXP2's eviction from chromatin and supplant the solubilizing function of DNA. Further, human-specific amino acid subs

Early neural dysfunction reflected in degraded auditory cortex responses in pre-regression heterozygous Mecp2 rats.

Rett syndrome, a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked Mecp2 gene, is characterized by typical early development followed by rapid developmental regression between 6 and 18 months of age. Affected individuals exhibit seizures, cognitive impairments, motor deficits, and difficulties in speech-language processing. Post-regression rodent models of Rett syndrome have been observed to follow similar regression, presenting sensory processing difficulties during auditory discrimination tasks, as well as degraded auditory cortical responses. However, little is known about the auditory p

Characterizing predictors of response to behavioral interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder: A meta-analytic approach.

A comprehensive understanding of specific factors contributing to variability in responsiveness of children with autism to interventions is paramount for making evidence-based clinical and policy decisions. This meta-analysis examined child and family characteristics, as well as intervention design factors, associated with outcomes of behavioral interventions for children with autism. A systematic review identified 95 studies published between 1987 and 2024, encompassing 6780 children on the autism spectrum and 2150 independent effect sizes. Results indicated that stronger post-intervention ef

Clinical and Developmental Outcomes After 50 Years of Newborn Bloodspot Screening for Classical Galactosaemia in the Republic of Ireland.

Classical Galactosaemia (CG) is an inborn error of carbohydrate metabolism. In untreated neonates, CG leads to a multi-organ toxicity with life-threatening symptoms. Newborn Screening for CG began in the Republic of Ireland in 1972. In Ireland, two forms of neonatal screening occur. High-risk infants are fed lactose-free/galactose-free formula until the result of their Beutler screening test on day 1. All other infants are fed as per parental preference and are screened on day three to five. While immediate or early implementation of a strict lactose-free diet together with medical interventio

Acoustic and phonological processes in Williams Syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis focuses on acoustic, phonetic and phonological aspects of language processing in Williams syndrome (WS), a rare neurodevelopmental genetic disorder. Based on N = 51 papers, we aimed at identifying the status of these languages processes in WS relative to different types of control groups and we examined possible sources of variability of results through moderator analyses. At the acoustic level, evidence for hearing loss and impaired acoustic discrimination was observed. At the phonetic and sublexical phonological level, results were inconclusive due to limited literature. A
