Verbal and Motor Skills in Mandarin-Speaking Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Do Co-Occurring Motor Deficits Matter?

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) often show motor coordination difficulties. Yet, it remains unclear whether children with DLD who have motor difficulties represent a distinct subtype with different verbal profiles compared with children with DLD whose motor coordination falls within the typical range. This study examined the verbal and motor profiles of Mandarin-speaking school-age children with DLD, comparing subgroups with and without co-occurring developmental coordination disorder (DCD). METHOD: Thirty-five children with DLD and 59 typically developing (TD)

'Better Conversations With Developmental Language Disorder': Designing a Novel Intervention for School-Aged Children and Their Main Carers.

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) experience difficulties with receptive and expressive language, which can affect their participation in everyday interactions with others. This, in turn, can impact their ongoing language development and ability to form and maintain friendships. This paper describes the development of a complex intervention, 'Better Conversations with Developmental Language Disorder' (BCDLD), designed with and for school-aged children with DLD and their main carers. METHODS: Medical Research Council guidelines for developing complex interventions

Age at Surgery Associated With Increased Expressive Language Delays in Children With Single Suture Craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated overall expressive language delays in craniosynostosis and whether age at surgery is associated with expressive language delays in this cohort. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with single-suture craniosynostosis treated at a single academic center between 2012 and 2023. Patients with documented expressive language delays by a speech-language pathologist were identified. Patients with syndromic craniosynostosis, genetic syndromes, cleft palate, hearing loss, or other anatomic or neurological conditions affecting languag

Statistical Learning in Dynamic Assessment to Identify Developmental Language Disorder in Spanish-English-Speaking Preschoolers: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: The current project was a prospective feasibility study using a dynamic assessment of statistical learning of a novel morpheme for the identification of developmental language disorder (DLD) in Spanish-English-speaking preschoolers. The aims were to (a) create a reliable dynamic assessment and (b) determine which elements of scoring yielded the highest classification accuracy. METHOD: Spanish-English bilinguals, aged 4;0-5;11 (years;months), who had no history of neurologic or other impairments were eligible (N = 18; 12 typically developing [TD], six with DLD). The data were colle

Parental Roles in Language Intervention: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Children with language delays (LDs) or language disorders face persistent challenges in their development. Speech and language therapy is vital, and within it, parental involvement is recognized as a key factor in therapeutic success. Although many parent-implemented interventions exist, little is known about the specific roles parents assume, particularly across different diagnostic groups: LD, developmental language disorder (DLD), and language disorder associated with other conditions (LD + X). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review and synthesize evidence on parental r

Latent trajectories of early social communication development are associated with autism diagnosis and language outcomes.

Social communication, or a child's ability to interact with others using verbal and nonverbal cues, is a strong predictor of later language development and lifelong outcomes in individuals on the autism spectrum. Interventions that target social communication skills would benefit from careful analysis of the emergence of these skills from their developmental onset. The current study assessed social communication in 801 infants and toddlers using the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (CSBS) at 12, 15, 18, and 24 months of age. Standard social, speech, and symbolic composite scores were

Receptive Vocabulary Outcomes in Children with Cochlear Implants with and Without Additional Difficulties: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Receptive vocabulary is essential for children's language, academic, and cognitive development. While cochlear implants (CIs) help children with severe to profound hearing loss develop spoken language, their vocabulary skills often fall behind their typical hearing (TH) peers, although early implantation and auditory-verbal therapy (AVT) can help narrow this gap. Children with CIs and other developmental difficulties face additional challenges, but can still progress, with outcomes depending on the disabilities' type and severity. Limited research exists on Arabic-speaki

Bilingual Children's Grammatical Productivity From Spontaneous Language Samples in English and Spanish.

PURPOSE: Much work has been done to characterize the grammatical productivity of English-speaking monolingual children and the English skills of bilingual children. However, less work has been done to characterize productivity of bilingual children in other languages. This study investigates the clinical utility of a Spanish grammatical productivity measure to address the need for linguistically responsive measures in bilingual language assessment. METHOD: Spontaneous language samples were collected for 23 typically developing (TD) preschoolers and nine preschoolers with developmental languag

Using network science to examine temporal relationships between 24-hour movement behaviors and depression during the transition to college: protocol for a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The transition to college coincides with the peak age of onset for depression and is marked by substantial changes in 24-hour movement behaviors (sleep, sedentary behavior, physical activity). Although these behaviors are modifiable and increasingly implicated in depression risk, most studies rely on cross-sectional, self-reported data and aggregate symptom scores, limiting insight into temporal dynamics and symptom-level heterogeneity. Integrating compositional modeling of 24-hour time use data with network approaches to psychopathology may clarify when and how specific behavioral

Phenotypic and Genetic Insights Into CNOT3-Related Intellectual Developmental Disorder of Speech Delay, Autism, and Dysmorphic Faces (IDDSADF) From the First Two Japanese Cases.

Intellectual Developmental Disorder with Speech Delay, Autism, and Dysmorphic Faces (IDDSADF) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by heterozygous variants in CNOT3. Although several cohorts have been documented worldwide, no Japanese patients have been reported to date. Here, we present the first two Japanese cases of IDDSADF, an 8-year-old girl and a 19-year-old boy, both presenting with developmental delay, characteristic facial features, and short stature. Both individuals exhibited a thin, tented upper lip, a morphology that has been rarely reported in other cohorts and may repres

Parent-reported emotion regulation in children with dyslexia and/or developmental language disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research has found that children with dyslexia have increased mental health problems. However, little is known about their emotion regulation, an ability that is crucial to psychosocial and academic well-being. Often, developmental language disorder (DLD) co-occurs with dyslexia, and importantly, DLD is also associated with increased mental health problems as well as poor emotion regulation. Neither line of research on mental health has accounted for the co-occurrence of dyslexia and DLD; thus, it is possible that difficulties with emotion regulation in either population m

Effective Whole Class Oral Language Interventions and Strategies for Students with Developmental Language Disorder: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting an estimated two students in every class of 30. Due to the importance of language for learning, students with DLD are at heightened risk for difficulties in the classroom and require high quality teaching and support. Despite this need, there is a lack of systematic evidence for whole class interventions and strategies targeting this population. Further, teachers and other professionals frequently rely on internet searches to identify ways to support students with DLD in the clas

Impaired Fine Motor Skills in Developmental Dyslexia: A Bayesian Meta-Analysis of 5 Decades of Research.

PURPOSE: Individuals with developmental dyslexia frequently exhibit impairments that extend beyond reading. Numerous studies examine fine motor skill deficits in dyslexia. The current study used meta-analysis to examine whether individuals with dyslexia show differences in motor skills when compared to age-matched individuals with neurotypical development, while also exploring possible moderators of effects. METHOD: We report findings of a Bayesian hierarchical meta-analysis evaluating evidence of co-occurring motor skills deficits in dyslexia, using literature spanning 5 decades (1970-2025).

Asynchronous Social Communication Development in Autism: A Component-Level Analysis.

PURPOSE: Early social communication in autistic children is multidimensional and often develops asynchronously, with relative strengths in goal-directed communication and challenges in socially mediated behaviors. Composite outcome measures may obscure component-level effects. This exploratory secondary analysis examined component-level effects of the Pathways Early Autism Intervention (Pathways) on social communication. METHODS: Data were drawn from a randomized controlled trial in which autistic children were stratified by age (< 3 years; ≥3 years) and randomized to receive Pathways or serv
