Nonverbal communication and early language acquisition in children with Down syndrome and in normally developing children.

Many children with Down syndrome display asynchrony in development with the acquisition of language preceding at a slower pace than the acquisition of other cognitive skills. Recent research suggests that the expressive language delays that are displayed by these children may be associated with an earlier disturbance in the development of nonverbal requesting skills (Mundy, Sigman, Kasari, & Yirmiya, 1988; Smith & von Tetzchner, 1986). To test this hypothesis, a longitudinal study of 37 children with Down syndrome and 25 children with normal development was conducted. The results of the study

[Follow-up of psychiatric disorders and specific developmental delay disorders in special education students].

In a prospective longitudinal study 72 children who were attending a special school for children with learning disabilities in Erlangen were examined in 1990 and again in 1992/93. At the first examination the children's mean age was 7 years 1 month and at the second 8 years 10 months. The sample contained many more boys than girls. Reported here are the findings on the course of the psychiatric disorders and the specific developmental disorders of speech and language and motor function. There was a marked decrease in the prevalence of psychiatric disorders. Of the 17 children with a psychiatri

Diagnoses of the human response pattern, communicating: a proposal for revision.

The authors present an analysis of the concept of communication, and propose a revision of NANDA's taxonomic human response pattern communicating, and its nursing diagnosis, impaired verbal communication. The authors recommend that the definitions of the human response pattern and its diagnosis be modified to incorporate facets other than verbal emissions. The addition of new defining characteristics and related factors also should be considered. New defining characteristics could include modifications of criteria of the American Speech and Hearing Association, highlighting disturbances in spe

Social and biological risk factors for mild and borderline impairment of language comprehension in a cohort of five-year-old children.

Biological risk factors during intra-uterine life, delivery and the neonatal period, and measures of social adversity during pregnancy, were studied as predictors of a 'mildly impaired' (50 to 74) or 'borderline' (75 to 84) score on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) at aged five years in 3906 children. Biological risk factors in pregnancy were associated with neither PPVT outcome. Gestation of < 36 weeks, > 3 minutes to establishment of respiration and admission to intensive care were associated with a lower PPVT score indicating mild impairment, though only in the unadjusted analyses

[Differential development of 2 children with developmental dysphasia].

The development of two boys with the diagnosis of specific language impairment each of whom spoke only five words at the age of three is described through the third grade (regular school). In spite of similarities in nonverbal abilities and in conditions of therapy and general care the two children developed quite differently. One achieved an average language level by about age five, whereas the other seemed to stagnate from about this age on even though he made good progress in other areas. The author discusses the role of auditory perception, learning strategies, memory and behavior in the l

Absence of an association between insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and developmental learning difficulties.

For several years, investigators have been examining the relationship between learning difficulties and a variety of immunological disorders. Two recent studies by Hansen and colleagues reported a negative association between Type 1 diabetes and reading disabilities (dyslexia): subjects with Type 1 diabetes had a lower prevalence of dyslexia than their nondiabetic relatives. In order to control for the impact of environmental variables on learning, we investigated the relationship between Type 1 diabetes and learning problems in 27 sibling pairs, ranging in age from 6 to 20 years. Overlapping submicroscopic deletions in Xq28 in two unrelated boys with developmental disorders: identification of a gene near FRAXE.

Two unrelated boys are described with delay in development and submicroscopic deletions in Xq28, near FRAXE. Molecular diagnosis to exclude the fragile X (FRAXA) syndrome used the direct probe pfxa3, together with a control probe pS8 (DXS296), against PstI restriction digests of DNA. Deletions were detected initially by the control probe pS8, which is an anonymous fragment subcloned from YAC 539, within 1 Mb distal to FRAXA. Further molecular analyses determined that the maximum size of the deletion is < 100 kb in one boy (MK) and is wholly overlapped by the deletion of up to approximately 200

[Upper respiratory tract obstruction leading to death after resection of the submandibular gland: A case report].

Primary peritoneal serous carcinoma (PPSC) is a rare malignancy that arises primarily from peritoneal surface epithelium. However there are limited studies on these tumors even in world literature. To study the clinical, pathologic profile, outcome and prognostic features of PPSC. A 5 year retrospective study of PPSC diagnosed and treated at our centre was conducted. The pathological specimen of PPSC diagnosed from January 2008 to December 2012 were reviewed by gynaeconcopathologists. The diagnosis was based on GOG criteria, complemented with IHC. Majority of the patients underwent upfront de-

The motor planning abilities of phonologically disordered children.

The motor planning abilities of three subgroups of speech-disordered children were compared to normally speaking age- and comprehension-matched controls. There were 10 phonologically delayed children who used sound-pattern errors typical of chronologically aged younger children (delayed group); 10 children whose phonological system was characterised by the consistent use of non-developmental phonological processes (deviant consistent group); and 10 children whose production of specific lexical items and phonological features was variable (inconsistent group). The groups were compared on tasks

Early expressive language of severely visually impaired children.

This paper presents a comparison of the early language of nine blind and nine severely visually impaired children, with no other impairments, who were recruited from paediatric vision clinics in London and assessed in the second and third year of life using the Reynell-Zinkin Developmental Scales. Further information on milestones and content of early expressive language was obtained from parents' diary recordings of their children's emerging words. It is concluded that severely visually impaired children's expressive language tends to develop later than that of sighted children. The effect of

Effect of Alzheimer's disease on communication function.

Dementia has a significant impact on communication abilities. The profile of communication skills in dementia differ from the profiles of developmental aging and focal organic disorders. Normal elders may have some episodic memory losses and slower reaction times as aging progresses. Focal language disorders (aphasia and right hemisphere disorders) will affect specific language functions without affecting intellect and memory. Communication in the presence of dementia progresses through three stages. The first stage deficits are primarily in the content area of lexical access and subtle conver

School performance at nine years of age in very premature and very low birth weight infants: perinatal risk factors and predictors at five years of age. Collaborative Project on Preterm and Small for Gestational Age (POPS) Infants in The Netherlands.

To assess the impact of both perinatal disorders and developmental problems identified at preschool age on school performance, we followed a virtually complete birth cohort of very premature (< 32 completed weeks of gestation) and very low birth weight infants until they were 9 years of age. In 84% of the survivors (n = 813), data on school performance were available for analysis. At the age of 9 years, 19% of the children were in special education. Of the children in mainstream education, 32% were in a grade below the appropriate level for age and 38% had special assistance. After correction

[Short term memory and severe language disorders in the child].

Memory, and particularly short-term memory or "working memory" (Baddeley), is involved in language acquisition in children. We have studied short-term memory, with verbal-and non verbal tests, of 8 children suffering from developmental dysphasia compared with other ones, matched in terms of age and performance I.Q. (W.I.S.C.-R.). The digit span did not significantly differ in the two groups, while the visuo-spatial span was lower in the dysphasic group. The memorization of a list of monosyllabic words by dysphasic children was poor in the absence of visual presentation and improved by it. Diff

Cohesive discourse in pervasive developmental disorders.

Investigated the use of cohesive links to create a reciprocal conversation in individuals with autism, Asperger syndrome, and a control group of children and adolescents with nonspecific social problems. All subjects engaged in a 10-minute conversation with an examiner that touched on various topics. The conversation was audiotaped, transcribed, and coded blindly for several types of cohesive links. Compared to controls, the higher functioning autistic group referred less to a previous stretch of the conversation and more to an aspect of the physical environment. The Asperger group, on the oth

[Synopsis of results with 1,300 children with language developmental delay from the etiopathogenetic, audiologic and speech pathology viewpoint].

This study presents the results of 1,305 children with speech disorders. The examination included ENT inspection, audiometry, speech evaluations and if required, psychological tests. In 48% we found hearing loss, most frequently in the age-group up to 4 years. In 95% hearing loss fluctuated about 20 dB, caused by malfunction of the tube or by adenoids, not only in autumn and winter, but throughout the year. In this case, the total hearing input of these children is reduced. In only 5% we found cochlear hearing loss. In hearing-impaired children the speech development was significantly depresse

Standard EEG and dyslexia in children--new evidence for specific correlates?

Contrary to the current assumption that there are no specific correlates of dyslexia in the standard clinical EEG, we have often noted a spontaneous "intermittent left parietal alpha desynchronization" (ILPAD) when visually evaluating the standard EEGs of children with delayed speech and language development and/or dyslexia. Visual evaluations of EEGs, as well as computer-assisted frequency analysis of three pairs of matched groups (healthy and hyperkinetic children with vs. without relatively "low levels" of verbal performance, as well as children with other child psychiatric disorders with v
