Four new speech and prosody-voice measures for genetics research and other studies in developmental phonological disorders.

Research in developmental phonological disorders, particularly emerging subgroup studies using behavioral and molecular genetics, requires qualitative and continuous measurement systems that meet a variety of substantive and psychometric assumptions. This paper reviews relevant issues underlying such needs and presents four measurement proposals developed expressly for causal-correlates research. The primary qualitative system is the Speech Disorders Classification System (SDCS), a 10-category nosology for dichotomous and hierarchical polychotomous classification of speech disorders from 2 yea

Relationship between language and fluency in children with developmental language disorders.

The present investigation addresses two primary hypotheses: (a) that a subset of children with developmental language disorders exhibits significantly more disfluencies than other children with language disorders and (b) that differences between the disfluent and nondisfluent groups observed in fluency may be related to differences in language deficits. Spontaneous language samples from 60 preschool children with developmental language disorders were analyzed for frequency and type of disfluencies. Comparisons of the frequency of disfluencies across subjects revealed that a subset of 10 subjec

Development differences in vowel duration in open and closed syllables.

Vowel duration in open and closed syllables was investigated in groups of ten normal 5-, 8-, and 10-year-old children, and adults. Productions of three syllables (bee, bead, beet), analyzed acoustically for vowel duration, indicated that for all age groups, mean vowel durations for "bee" and "bead" were significantly different from "beet" but were not different from each other. Developmental effects were noted in mean and variability of vowel duration. In addition, a context effect was observed, with adult-like values for both mean and variability obtained at an earlier age for "beet" than for

[Pediatric dysphasia. 1. The concept and clinical aspects].

This survey deals with the early diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental dysphasia, which may prevent the progression of learning and behavior disorders. In the pre-verbal and early verbal stage, the severity of the clinical picture is primarily determined by concomitant motor pathology (motor dysfunction, dysarthria, general and oral dyspraxia) and by receptive pathology (hearing and auditory perception). In the verbal period, linguistic problems start to play a role, and often combine with oral motor symptoms to present a mixed picture. Various language syndromes do not become

Managing the language and learning needs of the communication-impaired preschool child. A proactive approach.

If a proactive approach to assessment and intervention had been used in the case study presented at the beginning of this article, the following might have occurred: The SLP would have asked the parents and brother of the 3 1/2-year-old child referred for a communication evaluation to participate in the assessment activities. The parents would have been asked to prioritize their expectations for their daughter's communication, behavior, and school success. They would have been told the SLP would do the same based on her knowledge of performance expectations in these areas for a 3 1/2-year old.

Two approaches to the facilitation of grammar in children with language impairment: an experimental evaluation.

Two approaches to grammar facilitation in preschool-age children with language impairment were evaluated. One approach was administered by a speech-language pathologist and the other was presented by the subjects' parents, who were trained by the speech-language pathologist. Both treatment packages ran for 4 1/2 months and made use of focused stimulation procedures and a cyclical goal-attack strategy. Subjects were 30 children between the ages of 3:8 and 5:10 (years:months) who had marked delays in grammatical development. Children who served in a delayed-treatment control group averaged no ga

Language and development in FG syndrome with callosal agenesis.

The FG syndrome is characterized by unusual facies, sudden infant death, developmental delay, and abnormalities of the cardiac, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems. No longitudinal data on development in surviving patients are currently available. Serial evaluations of a patient with FG syndrome, whose sole central nervous system anomaly was agenesis of the corpus callosum, showed a consistent pattern over time. Specific language impairments in syntactic and pragmatic-semantic areas are emerging. These findings represent the first detailed data on which expectations for children with

Contextual probability evaluation in autistic, receptive developmental language disorder, and control children: event-related brain potential evidence.

Compared 8- to 14-year-old children with either autism or receptive developmental language disorder (RDLD) to age- and IQ-matched normal controls in their ability to detect both frequent (p = .70) and infrequent (p = .30) randomly presented auditory stimuli under task and no-task conditions. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs), behavioral reaction times, and target detection accuracy rates were measured. Although the three groups of children performed in a similar manner on behavioral measures, only the children with autism demonstrated an abnormally small amplitude of the P3b, a component o

Genetics in disorders of language.

As is typical in science, early work in an area is bound to have weaknesses. Therefore, it is not unexpected that the extent to which conclusions can be drawn from the current research on the genetics of DLD is limited. These limitations stem from the use of heterogeneous samples, the use of overly broad phenotypes, survey rather than objective test data, and only a few studies looking beyond simple familiarity. Future research is in progress that attempts to correct for these weaknesses. Still, some practically useful information can be gleaned from the work done thus far. First, we can now h

Developmental implications of nonlinear phonological theory.

For the past 20 years the field of linguistics has provided a basis for assessment and treatment methods for speech and language disorders. Since Goldsmiths (1976) dissertation showing tone as an independently functioning autosegment, new and robust phonological frameworks have become available, i.e. nonlinear phonological frameworks. This paper outlines major aspects of nonlinear phonology and its developmental implications. Based in generative phonology, nonlinear frameworks adhere to many of the tenets of the generative grammar tradition, such as markedness and autonomy of linguistic compon

[Early developmental aspects of Tourette syndrome].

Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by a combination of multiple motor and vocal tics. It is frequently associated with other manifestations which are typical, though not obligatory for the diagnosis. Some of these manifestations may appear in early childhood and cause developmental disorders. Our observations in 2 families, in which an early developmental symptom was later found to be an associated manifestation of Tourette syndrome, led us to investigate our other patients with this syndrome. In all, 16 patients were studied. Early developmental disabilities, such

Contextual and linguistic correlates of intelligibility in children with developmental phonological disorders.

Listeners' glosses of children's intended words provided data for two studies of the potential influence of selected contextual and linguistic variables on word intelligibility. Several regularities associated with the occurrence of unintelligible words were identified. In Study I, intelligibility outcomes were associated with utterance length and fluency, word position, intelligibility of adjacent words, phonological complexity, and grammatical form. In Study II, intelligibility outcomes were associated with phonological complexity, syllabic structure, and grammatical form. Discussion conside

[A study of infant and child health care "follow up clinic"].

Health screening examinations of children. The 1st. health screening forms a major part of the public health services in community health, but it still encounters many problems. In the present study, the health screening programs and the infant and child health care follow-up clinic (2nd health screening) conducted by the Yoshikawa health center in Saitama-pref., as well as by each city and town, were investigated and analyzed. The findings are as follows: 1. In the first, health screening they pointed out some developmental disorders of 21.2%. About 80% of them are "to continue with follow-up

Thirty years of research on developmental neurolinguistics.

A body of medically important work has accumulated in the field of developmental neurolinguistics in the 30 years since Lenneberg set forth a research agenda for that field, consisting of the following: (1) the physiologic specialization or endowment for speech; (2) the genetic origin or natural history of vocalization and speech; (3) the nature of prelinguistic behavior, making possible the detection of any environmental (social) influences; (4) the development of motor-speech organization from birth; and (5) the limiting effects of deficient intelligence, hearing, and environmental stimulati

Communication effects of prenatal alcohol exposure.

This paper surveys the literature on prenatal alcohol exposure. The focus is on studies of speech, language, and communication skills evidenced by children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol effects. Concomitant physical, behavioral, intellectual, and learning patterns are reviewed. Symptoms presented by alcohol-exposed children are compared to those seen in other developmentally delayed children. Future needs in areas of identification, assessment, and treatment are discussed.

The fate of "small twins": a four-year follow-up study of low birthweight and prematurely born twins.

This follow-up study of twins includes 35 families from the Stockholm area. One section concerns the physical and mental development of the twins. The other sections compare the development of the children with their parents' expectations of them and the parents' feelings about the delivery. Seven twin pairs (20%) in the total group were born before 37 complete gestational weeks. Thirty-seven of the twins weighed less than 2,500 g at birth; of these, 23 (9 boys and 14 girls) weighed less than 2,500g, although they were born after 37 gestational weeks. At four years of age, 22 of the 68 twins s

Relevant factors in the identification of hearing loss.

This study examined factors which may affect early identification of hearing loss. The medical records of 123 children with educationally significant hearing impairment were examined. Information about each child's degree and type of hearing loss, etiology, referral source, birth and medical history, additional handicaps, age of suspicion of loss, mode of identification, age of identification, and age at which aided was entered into a database for further analysis. The age range for identification was 7 weeks to 10 yr, with a median age of 2.1 yr. Children with a greater degree of hearing loss

Early language development and severe visual impairment.

Some blind children show an early facility with expressive language in advance of their true level of comprehension; children who have severely impaired vision, but use visually-directed reaching, do not. Inspection of developmental assessments of 40 blind and very severely visually impaired children with no other disability, seen at the Wolfson Centre, London, confirmed these patterns. However, a considerable number of blind children showed a lag in expressive speech relative to comprehension, which might mean first words appearing as late as 2 years of age. Later assessments of this group of

Long-term follow-up study of children developmentally retarded by early environmental deprivation.

In 1972, two children representing a case of severe developmental retardation were discovered and taken into custody. The children, an older sister (referred to as F) and a younger brother (referred to as G), were found to have achieved no more than the physical and mental age level normal to children 1 year of age or less, in spite of their actual respective chronological ages of 6 and 5. Investigation revealed that the children's developmental retardation was due both to extreme social isolation and to complex deprivation. By following their sensorimotor, linguistic, cognitive, and socio-emo

[Psychiatric manifestations in children with speech disorders with and without minimal brain dysfunction].

Several studies have shown not only that children with psychiatric problems are having more speech and language disorders than control groups. Moreover it has been shown that other developmental disorders are more common in groups with speech and language disorders. In a study in Munich including all children with diagnosis of specific developmental disorders of speech and language seen in our outpatient department from 1981 to 1986 we found significantly more psychiatric diagnoses in a subgroup of children with MBD. This was proved for the boys only however not for the smaller group of girls.
