Phonological Awareness Skills in Thai-Speaking Children: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Phonological awareness is an important skill for literacy development. However, limited research has been conducted on tonal languages or non-alphabetic orthographies, including Thai. Understanding the development of phonological awareness in Thai-speaking children is important for identifying risk factors for dyslexia and for understanding the role of phonological awareness in Thai-speaking children with communication impairments. AIMS: This scoping review synthesised empirical studies on phonological awareness in Thai-speaking children. We aimed to describe the tasks and experim

A Narrative Review of Neurodevelopmental, Psychiatric, and Behavioral Consequences of Preterm Birth.

Preterm infants survive into adulthood. However, this survival often comes with increased health and social challenges during adolescence and adulthood, including medical disabilities, learning difficulties, and behavioral and psychological issues. Understanding the long-term outcomes of preterm birth is crucial for developing prevention and treatment strategies, as well as setting future research priorities. Research in this area can be complex due to the need for long follow-up periods and changes in the classification of diseases and outcomes over time, which make it challenging to establis

Interactive Book Reading to Accelerate Word Learning by Kindergarten Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Incorporating Retrieval-Based Practice Into Training.

PURPOSE: Laboratory-based word learning research demonstrates that retrieval-based practice supports learning and retention more than passive training strategies. The goal of the current study was to determine whether incorporating retrieval-based practice into an interactive book reading intervention contributed to better learning and retention for children with developmental language disorder (DLD) than a more passive version. METHOD: Kindergarten children with DLD (N = 37) completed the intervention administered twice a week for a total of 15 sessions. The between-participants conditions v

Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Educational Context: A Detailed Case Report.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside the presence of repetitive and restrictive behaviours. The diagnosis is based on the criteria outlined in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and requires a multidisciplinary and longitudinal clinical approach. Early symptom identification and timely intervention significantly influence treatment outcomes and the child's functional capacity. This case report presents a male child with pronounced

The Effect of Language Background and Grade Level on Fricative Production of Children Learning Mandarin in a Chinese-English Bilingual Program.

PURPOSE: This study aims to examine how language background and grade level influence the voiceless sibilant fricative production of two groups of children enrolled in a Mandarin-English bilingual school in Canada. One group of children was exposed to Mandarin at home as heritage language (HL), and the other group had little to no exposure to Mandarin until they started learning it as a second language (L2) at school. METHOD: Eighty-two children in Grades 1, 3, or 5 as well as 12 teachers engaged in picture-naming tasks in both English and Mandarin. Their speech production of voiceless sibila

De novo protein-coding gene variants in developmental stuttering.

Developmental stuttering is a common childhood condition characterized by disfluencies in speech, such as blocks, prolongations, and repetitions. While most children who stutter do so only transiently, there are some for whom stuttering persists into adulthood. Rare-variant screens in families including multiple relatives with persistent stuttering have so far identified six genes carrying putative pathogenic variants hypothesized to act in a monogenic fashion. Here, we applied a complementary study design, searching instead for de novo variants in exomes of 85 independent parent-child trios,

Does normal fetal brain imaging in monochorionic twins following co-twin fetal demise eliminate the risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcome?

OBJECTIVE: To assess the residual risk of long-term adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in monochorionic twins following co-twin fetal demise and normal fetal brain imaging. METHODS: All monochorionic twin pregnancies with co-twin fetal demise were included. Patients were identified through a search of inpatient medical records for co-twin fetal demise. Cases involving fetal demise following intrauterine procedures (e.g., laser ablation or termination of pregnancy following findings on fetal brain imaging) were excluded. Following co-twin demise, fetal brain imaging, including serial neuroson

Schinzel-Giedion syndrome: communication, feeding and motor skills in 16 individuals.

Schinzel-Giedion Syndrome (SGS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by pathogenic SETBP1 gain-of-function variants. SGS medical features have been well described. Associated skills critical to quality of life have such as communication, feeding, and motor skills are yet to be characterised. Here we used standardised caregiver report tools to characterise these skills as well as the medical features, in 16 children with SGS (median = 5 years, 7 months, range 6 months to 12.5 years). Vineland-3 scores reflected severe impairment in communication, daily living, socialisation and motor sk

Timing of Intervals Between Utterances in Typically Developing Infants and Infants Later Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background: Understanding the origin and natural organization of early infant vocalizations is important for predicting communication and language abilities in later years. The very frequent production of speech-like vocalizations (hereafter "protophones"), occurring largely independently of interaction, is part of this developmental process. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the gap durations (time intervals) between protophones, comparing typically developing (TD) infants and infants later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in a naturalistic setting where endogenous proto

Linguistic Markers of Theory of Mind in Spontaneous Speech: A Narrative Review.

The relationship between theory of mind (ToM) or mentalizing, i.e., the cognitive ability to attribute mental states to oneself and others, and language has been widely explored across disciplines. Identifying reliable linguistic markers of ToM extractable from individuals' speech provides a promising path for both research and clinical practice. In this narrative review, we aimed to synthesize findings from studies identified through a PSYCINFO search to provide an overview of speech-based markers associated with ToM abilities. Our results revealed six primary categories of relevant speech ma

Pediatricians' Knowledge of Bilingualism and Provision of Culturally Responsive Care for Latine Dual Language Learners: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: Pediatricians are the first professionals to provide guidance about language development to families with young children and referrals for those who may have a language or communication disorder. One-quarter of children in the United States are dual language learners (DLLs), yet there is little information about pediatrician's readiness to provide culturally and linguistically responsive care for these children. This pilot study sought to examine pediatricians' knowledge of bilingual language development and its relation to the provision of language and literacy promotion and developm

Sensorimotor contingencies in congenital hearing loss: The critical first nine months.

In the recent two decades it became possible to compensate severe-to-profound hearing loss using cochlear implants (CIs). The data from implanted children demonstrate that hearing and language acquisition is well-possible within an early critical period of 3 years, however, the earlier the access to sound is provided, the better outcomes can be expected. While the clinical priority is providing deaf and hard of hearing children with access to spoken language through hearing aids and CIs as early as possible, for most deaf children this access is currently in the second or third year of life. Concurrent developmental language level change for children with autism spectrum disorder using alternative and augmentative communication systems: a cross-sectional study in Cyprus.

We examined the concurrent change in developmental language phase (DLP) and linguistic status of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/autism, identified as Nonverbal/Minimally-Verbal (NV/MV), utilizing Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. We compared the linguistic output of NV/MV autistic children concurrently, with and without use of AAC systems. Additionally, we compared the linguistic level, characteristics, and early developmental milestones for AAC users and non-users. A sample of 23 autistic children (3-12 years-of-age) identified as NV/MV based on the DLP resul

Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Diagnoses Among Pediatric Patients With Turner Syndrome: A PEDSnet Study.

Individuals with Turner syndrome (TS) are known to be at increased risk for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) and mental health (MH) conditions, but data from large, population-based pediatric samples remain limited. We examined the prevalence of NDD and MH diagnoses among youth with TS (N = 2145) compared to matched female controls (N = 8580) across six US pediatric health systems. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using generalized estimating equations. Youth with TS had significantly higher odds of an NDD diagnosis (24.2% vs. 11.9%; OR 2.37, 95% CI 2.11-2.6
