Background: Efficient visual information processing and cognitive control of saccadic eye movements are critical for reading acquisition in early school. Identifying children at risk of reading difficulties requires reliable assessment tools that can be implemented on a large scale. The Developmental Eye Movement (DEM) test provides an indirect measure of the efficiency of visuo-attentional processes related to eye movements in a simulated reading task. Purpose, Research Design, and Study Sample: To support its use as a screening tool, we conducted a normative validation of the DEM-test in a l

The imaging genetics of specific reading disabilities (SRD) is an emerging field that aims to characterize the disabilities' neurobiological causes, including atypical brain structure and function and distinct genetic architecture. The present review aimed to summarize current imaging genetics studies of SRD, characterize the effect sizes of reported results by calculating Cohen's d, complete a Fisher's Combined Probability Test for genes featured in multiple studies, and determine areas for future research. Results demonstrate associations between SRD risk genes and reading network brain phen

Developmental dyslexia is defined as a specific reading disorder but is also thought to be underpinned by a deficit in motor skills that may well affect handwriting performance. However, the results of studies addressing this issue are not consistent. The present study was, therefore, designed to better understand the functioning of handwriting in children with dyslexia, by conducting an analysis of the legibility and fluency of handwritten letters, supplemented by an assessment of motor skills. The performances of 15 children with dyslexia (Mage = 11.4 years) were compared with those of two g

Genetic association studies have identified KIAA0319 gene as a possible susceptibility locus for reading disorder; however, very few studies are available from India. The study was planned to investigate the familial pattern and association of KIAA0319 polymorphisms among children with reading disorder visiting a tertiary centre in North India. This is a case-control, familial, and genetic association study on 30 children diagnosed with reading disorder (ICD-10) and 30 matched healthy controls and their families. The Aggregate Neurobehavioral Student Health and Educational Review System was ad

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is one of the common problems seen in children worldwide. There is high co-morbidity of dyslexia with attentional and behaviour problems which could have familial pattern. This study aims to compare the attentional and behavioural problems in children with dyslexia and their first-degree relatives with controls.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional comparative study with single interview method in an out-patient setting. Formally diagnosed (ICD-10) cases of 30 children with specific reading disorder and 30 healthy matched controls and their first-degree relatives were asses

BACKGROUND: While an understanding of the genetic contributions to specific reading disorder (RD) is emerging, there is no agreement about which putative hazard factors are clearly involved in the aetiology of this disorder.
AIMS: A literature review looking at the impact of environmental risk variables implicated in RD either per se or when interacting with the genes.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We performed a systematic literature review using the following keywords: dyslexia OR reading disability AND environmental risk factors OR environmental hazard factors, in the following electronic datab

In the perinatal period the developing brain is extremely vulnerable for a variety of insults. Perinatal conditions, such as extreme prematurity, perinatal asphyxia, and their complications can lead to lifelong sensorimotor, cognitive and behavioral impairment. Prediction of long-term neurodevelopment of preterm and ill term infants at risk for brain injury at an early stage remains a big challenge. Identification of brain lesions and disturbed function is essential for an accurate diagnosis. Currently, the prediction of the outcome is based on a variety of diagnostic tools and clinical assess

Dyslexia also known as specific reading disorder is a complex heritable disorder with unexpected difficulty in learning to read and spell despite adequate intelligence, education, environment, and normal senses. Over past decades, researchers have attempted to characterize dyslexia neurobiological and genetic levels and unfold its pathophysiology. The genetic research on dyslexia has received attention in Asia from the last decade. Though limited by different constraints the studies from Asia have been able to gather significant evidence in this field. We present a review of studies of genetic

Reading disabilities are one of the most significant causes of school failure and may result from different causes and cognitive processes. A comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests was applied to a control group of 102 children (46 girls, 56 boys) with no history of learning disabilities and 32 children (13 girls, 19 boys) with poor reading achievement (PRA) to characterize their cognitive profile. A principal component analysis of the cognitive measures was undertaken to identify cognitive domains. Age-adjusted normative data were computed from controls for verbal and visuospatial

This article describes psychometric testing of an Icelandic adaptation of the Adult Reading History Questionnaire (ARHQ), designed to detect a history of reading difficulties indicative of dyslexia. Tested in a large and diverse sample of 2,187 adults, the Icelandic adaptation demonstrated internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .92) and test-retest reliability (r = .93). Validity was established by comparing scores of adults who as children received ICD-10 diagnoses of specific reading disorder (F81.0; n = 419) to those of adults defined as nondyslexics (n = 679). ROC curve analy

Despite ample research into the language skills of children with specific reading disorder no studies so far have investigated whether there may be a difference between expressive and receptive language skills in this population. Yet, neuro-anatomical models would predict that children who have specific reading disorder which is not associated with movement or attention difficulties, would have lower receptive language skills than expressive. This study investigates the difference between expressive and receptive language skills in a sample of 17 children with specific reading difficulty aged

Optometrists will frequently see patients, who may have a diagnosis or a suspected diagnosis of dyslexia (specific reading disorder) and will need to manage and counsel such patients. There are many propounded theories on the cause(s) of dyslexia. Although most professionals in this area consider that dyslexia is chiefly a linguistic disorder, the possibility of a visual component is contentious. This article is a selective review of two commonly discussed theories that suggest a visual component in dyslexia; the magnocellular deficit theory and Meares-Irlen syndrome.

A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate whether specific reading disorder (SRD) groups demonstrate a deficit in using phonological recoding strategies. Thirty-four studies were reviewed that had compared the nonword reading performances of SRD groups with reading-level matched (RL) control groups. The average nonword reading difference between groups across the total number of studies was moderate (d = 0.65, N = 2865). Three predictors of the size of group differences in nonword reading ability were identified. Studies that used passage reading tests to match groups for reading level foun

Shifting of visual attention induced by peripheral cues was studied in 24 children with specific reading disorder (SRD) or dyslexia and was compared with that of 19 normal readers by means of a covert orienting paradigm. This paradigm presents participants with valid, neutral and invalid spatial cues preceding the presentation of a target stimulus. As compared to normal readers, in SRD children the inhibition effect (i.e. the difference between neutral and invalid cues) was absent. The 24 SRD children were divided into two groups matched for age, IQ and reading ability to study the efficacy of

This study investigated the gradient of visual attention in 21 children, 11 children with specific reading disorder (SRD) or dyslexia and 10 children with normal reading skills. We recorded reaction times (RTs) at the onset of a small point along the horizontal axis in the two visual fields. In 70% of the cases the target appeared inside a circle acting as focusing cue and in 30% of the cases it appeared outside, allowing us to study the distribution of attentional resources outside the selected area. Normally reading children showed a normal symmetric distribution of attention. Indeed, RTs we
