The control of attentional orienting was studied in children with specific reading disorder (SRD) or dyslexia, and it was compared with that of normal readers. We used the covert orienting paradigm to measure subjects' reaction times for target detection both in valid and invalid cue conditions, either in the left or in the right visual fields. In experiment 1, we investigated exogenous orienting. The cue consisted of a peripheral abrupt onset and the cue-target delay was 350 ms. As compared with normal readers, in dyslexics the cue effect was absent in the right visual field, whereas in the l

For the diagnosis of specific reading disorder (SRD) we studied the distribution in 187 elementary school children of the scores of Token test. Token test was performed under two conditions: listening and reading by presenting the same sentences. The diagnosis required a normal score under the listening condition, an abnormally low score under the reading condition and significantly large discrepancy between them. This test is valid and convenient for the diagnosis of SRD.

In this study, children with the guessing subtype of dyslexia (who read fast and inaccurately) were compared with children with the spelling subtype (who read slowly and accurately) on three aspects of executive functioning (EF): response inhibition, susceptibility to interference from irrelevant information, and planning. It was found that guessers were impaired in their ability to inhibit inappropriate responding on all tasks used to assess EF (the stop signal task, the Stroop task, and the Tower of London task). This raises the question of whether the specific reading disorder of guessers m
