Validation of the Updated (March 2025) Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised, with Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F) in Greek.

Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the updated (March 2025) version of the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised, with Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F) in Greek by examining its reliability, validity, and screening efficacy in a Greek sample. Methods: The M-CHAT-R/F was administered to Greek parents/primary caregivers of children aged 16-48 months, with no prior diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), severe sensory impairments, or other chronic conditions causing neurodevelopmental delay. Parents/primary caregivers were invite

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on technology-based interventions for elementary students with reading difficulties.

Technology-based reading interventions have been widely adopted to support elementary students with reading difficulties; however, empirical findings regarding their effectiveness and the instructional conditions under which they are most effective remain inconsistent. This meta-analysis synthesized evidence from 30 randomized controlled trials published between 2010 and 2025, representing 39 experimental contrasts, 160 effect sizes, and 4851 participants, all of whom were students with reading difficulties across both intervention and control groups. A multilevel meta-analytic approach was em

Juvenile Mice Develop Infarct-Induced Neurodegeneration and Emerging Cognitive Decline in a Model of Pediatric Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Over half of pediatric stroke survivors have permanent cognitive deficits, which can emerge late after stroke. Mechanisms of cognitive decline after pediatric stroke may differ from those in adults because children's strokes occur while brain and immune development are still ongoing. We therefore aimed to develop a pediatric mouse model of infarct-induced delayed cognitive decline to define age-related differences in immune responses compared with adults. METHODS: Male and female C57BL/6J mice were randomized to stroke or sham surgery at 28 days old to model stroke in late childho

The prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders in Smith-Magenis Syndrome: a PRISMA compliant systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Smith Magenis Syndrome is either due to a deletion in 17p11.2 locus or to a pathogenic variant in RAI1 gene and is associated with a higher risk of neurodevelopmental disorder. We performed a systematic review to assess the prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders (autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, intellectual developmental disorder, specific learning disabilities) in Smith Magenis Syndrome as a main outcome. We described the methods used to identify a neurodevelopmental disorder in this population and assessed a phenotype-genotype correlation a

Reading- and Spelling-Related Self-Concept, Emotions and Coping Strategies in Students With and Without Dyslexia.

Dyslexia can negatively affect attitudes such as self-concept, emotions and coping. Prior research has mainly focused on global academic self-concept and negative emotions, with limited focus on specific reading- and spelling-related self-concept, positive emotions and coping strategies. We examined the reading- and spelling-related attitudes of primary school students with (n = 90) and without (n = 1411) formally diagnosed dyslexia. Students were randomly assigned to fill out the Reading Attitudes Scales (n = 753) or the Spelling Attitudes Scales (n = 748), with which reading-/spelling-relate

Cross-domain spontaneous tempo differences in adults with developmental dyslexia: Evidence from speech and gait.

BACKGROUND: Developmental Dyslexia (DD) has historically been associated with phonological impairments though difficulties may be identified across cognitive and sensorimotor domains. The Temporal Sampling Framework proposed that atypical neural entrainment to temporal structure may underlie difficulties beyond phonological impairments in DD. However, tempo differences are inconsistently reported in the literature, particularly for ecologically valid, spontaneous motor tasks. AIMS: The present study examined whether university-aged adults with DD differ from skilled readers in spontaneous tem

Medical students with specific learning disabilities: mixed-methods systematic review of the prevalence, academic performance, challenges, and perceived impact of support interventions.

BACKGROUND: Specific learning disabilities (SpLDs)-including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia-affect approximately 5-8% of medical students. The demands of medical education may exacerbate these challenges, while stigma and inconsistent institutional support contribute to ongoing barriers. This mixed-methods systematic review synthesised evidence on prevalence, academic performance, challenges, and support needs to inform more inclusive medical education practices. METHODS: A mixed-methods systematic review was conducted following Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and

Glucocorticoid Receptor Translational Isoforms Generate Unique Glucocorticoid Responses in the Mouse Brain.

Glucocorticoids are primary stress hormones necessary for life that act on nearly every tissue in the body to maintain homeostasis. These hormones and their synthetic derivatives are widely used in the clinic to combat disease but are limited by serious adverse effects. The actions of glucocorticoids are mediated by the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). In addition to the classic full-length receptor (GR-A), seven highly conserved receptor isoforms with progressively shorter N-terminal transactivation domains (NTD) (GR-B, GR-C1, GR-C2, GR-C3, GR-D1, GR-D2, GR-D3) are produced from the single GR ge

Exploring social determinants of learning in nursing education: Barriers, opportunities, and strategies using the Chamberlain SDOL Framework.

BACKGROUND: The number of nursing students reporting health challenges and various disabilities, such as physical, mental, and learning disabilities, is increasing. Despite this shift, many nursing programs continue to rely on traditional structures and technical standards that may inadvertently discriminate against these and other diverse students. PURPOSE: This article presents Chamberlain University's Social Determinants of Learning (SDOL) Framework to better understand student performance and outcomes, as well as to explore its educational implications and potential strategies for mitigat

Enhancing the detection of visual-cognitive disruptions in automated dyslexia diagnosis using viscoelastic constitutive artificial neural networks for eye movement analysis.

PURPOSE: Dyslexia can be assessed using eye-tracking technology to monitor reading patterns, but challenges persist in distinguishing dyslexia-specific anomalies from those caused by other factors due to individual reading variability. METHODS: To address these challenges, enhancing the Detection of Visual-Cognitive Disruptions in Automated Dyslexia Diagnosis Using Viscoelastic Constitutive Artificial Neural Networks for Eye Movement Analysis (DVDD-VCANN-EMA) is proposed. Firstly, input data is gathered from ETDD70: Eye-Tracking Dyslexia Dataset. Then the input data is pre-processed employing

Using latent profiles to evaluate response to a language-based intervention.

Many children with oral language difficulties also experience challenges with word reading, as evidenced in the high comorbidity rate between developmental language disorders and dyslexia. The current study investigated a sample of students (n = 357) with language and literacy difficulties classified into latent classes based on pre-intervention performance on word reading and listening comprehension measures. Specifically, this study sought to determine the extent to which latent classes responded to an evidence-based, narrative language program at immediate post-test and a five-month follow-

Perinatal and familial factors associated with intellectual disability/global developmental delay: A multicenter frequency-matched case-control study.

Intellectual disability (ID) and global developmental delay (GDD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that place significant lifelong burdens on affected individuals and families. However, modifiable perinatal risk factors remain underexplored in multicenter Chinese populations. In this multicenter, frequency-matched case-control study, we aimed to identify independent familial and perinatal risk factors for ID/GDD and to standardize terminology for language impairment-related comorbidities. We recruited 412 children with ID/GDD and 824 developmentally normal controls from 15 tertiary centers bet

Education outside the classroom in Germany: An interdisciplinary multi-methods Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Schools are a central place in the lives of both children and teachers, with the potential to counteract current challenges such as a physical and emotional disconnection from nature, insufficient physical activity, and increased social isolation. Concepts like Education Outside the Classroom (EOtC) offer a variety of approaches and are already established in the curriculum in other countries, while in Germany EOtC is still in the early stages of implementation. Previous studies have focused on the effects of EOtC on students, with little attention paid to teachers, environmental p

Objective Comparison of Auditory Profiles Using Manifold Learning and Intrinsic Measures.

Assigning individuals with hearing impairment to auditory profiles can support a better understanding of the causes and consequences of hearing loss and facilitate profile-based hearing-aid fitting. However, the factors influencing auditory profile generation remain insufficiently understood, and existing profiling frameworks have rarely been compared systematically. This study therefore investigated the impact of two key factors-the clustering method and the number of profiles-on auditory profile generation. In addition, eight established auditory profiling frameworks were systematically revi

Analyzing state dyslexia legislation through the lens of oral language: an exploratory study.

Recent advocacy efforts have resulted in 49 out of 50 U.S. states passing some form of dyslexia legislation. This legislation may serve as a starting point for educators, clinicians, and parents to advocate for universal oral language screening as well as dyslexia screening. The purpose of this exploratory study is to investigate the degree to which oral language skills are already included in existing policies. We used deductive and inductive coding procedures to identify key words related to oral language skills. We then performed document analysis on 156 legislative documents related to dys

Upregulation of ATP-purinergic P2×2 receptors in the cochlea over-amplifies hearing sensitivity leading to hyperacusis and attenuation by antagonists.

Hearing hypersensitivity (hyperacusis) is a common hearing stress and can cause many psychological diseases, e.g., anxiety, learning disabilities, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Here, we report an unexpected finding that the upregulation of P2×2 ATP-purinergic receptors in the cochlea links to hyperacusis generation. We found that P2×2 expression in the cochlea but not in auditory centers was upregulated in the hyperacusis generated by Cx26 deficiency. Overexpression of P2×2 in the cochlea also caused hyperacusis. Conversely, downregulation of P2×2 expression or administr
