Asperger's syndrome: a clinical account.

The clinical features, course, aetiology, epidemiology, differential diagnosis and management of Asperger's syndrome are described. Classification is discussed and reasons are given for including the syndrome, together with early childhood autism, in a wider group of conditions which have, in common, impairment of development of social interaction, communication and imagination.

The effectiveness of operant language training with autistic children.

Studies of operant language therapy with autistic children have indicated that behavioral techniques may be of value in increasing the language skills of such children. A review of recent studies, however, suggests that in the absence of adequate experimental controls, misleading conclusions may be drawn about the effectiveness of treatment. It is also apparent that the effects of therapy vary according to the linguistic competence of the children involved, and to the different aspects of language ability being taught. The implications of recent findings for our understanding of the basic defi

Haloperidol -- its use in children.

Haloperidol is safe and effective in children for relieving psychotic symptoms associated with childhood autism, schizophrenia and mental retardation. It is the drug of choice for Tourette's syndrome, and may be useful in nonpsychotic hyperactive or aggressive children to control acute episodes, or when the stimulants normally useful in hyperactive children are ineffective. Such children taking haloperidol not only become calmer, but are often better able to respond to other modalities of therapy and to school instruction. Dosage, initially low, is increased gradually to minimize drowsiness an

Immediate free recall in early childhood autism: another point of behavioural similarity with the amnesic syndrome.

Autistic children were compared with age and ability matched controls on a test of immediate recall of word lists. Overall performance in the two groups was very similar. However, the overall recall scores were achieved differently by the two groups, the autistic subjects recalled significantly fewer earlier presented items and more later presented items than did controls. This finding is discussed in relation to the memory disabilities of adults suffering from the amnesic syndrome.

Precursors of symbol formation and childhood autism.

The salience of various precursory requirements for the formation of symbols is discussed. The conclusion is drawn that several necessary precursors could be assumed, and two experiments are described that were designed to test for the presence of these precursors in autistic children compared to matched retarded children. First, there was a study of the children's ability to imitate and form internal images, and then there was a study of their development of a concept of object permanence and ability to anticipate. These studies led to the conclusion that the autistic children could form inte

Sex ratios in early childhood autism and related conditions.

Children aged 0-14 on a specified census day, with impairments of verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction and imaginative play, and with repetitive, stereotyped activities, were identified in an epidemiological study carried out in an area of southeast London. Sociable moderately, severely, and profoundly retarded children were included for comparison. An overall male:female ratio of 2.6:1 was found in those with language and social impairments, but, in the children of this group who were moderately, severely, or profoundly retarded, the ratio was 2.1:1, closely similar to that

Delayed echolalia in autism: some observations on differences within the term.

Attention has recently focused on the need to build up a corpus of case observations relating to the function of delayed echolalia in various handicapping conditions but especially in early childhood autism. This present article offers six functional categories as an aid to clear reporting of observation and, thus clarification of this little-understood facet of deviant language development.

[Psychological correction of early infantile autism].

The possibility of psychological correction of early childhood autism was studied in 11 children. The work is based on an analysis of psychic dysontogenesis regularities and seeks bypass ways of mental development, the possibilities of the environmental arrangement and adults' influence to help to overcome biologically conditioned difficulties in the development of autistic children. They will mainly include a reduction of the emotional and motor tone, an elevated tendency towards sensory and emotional discomfort, the difficulties in the organization of goal-oriented actions. Effects of interaction on nonhandicapped children's attitudes toward autistic children.

Second and third graders (N = 28) were interviewed concerning their attitudes and understanding of children exhibiting childhood autism confounded by mental retardation. The interviews took place before and after the children had participated in a week of daily, half-hour play sessions with a class of six autistic children. Comparisons of the children's attitudes at each time indicated that they were overwhelmingly positive on both occasions. Contrary to earlier findings, children did not express more negative attitudes as a result of contact with autistic children; however, they did display a

Minor physical anomalies in childhood autism. Part II. Their relationship to maternal age.

A group of autistic children have been found to have an excess of minor physical anomalies (MPA) and birth and pregnancy complications. However, there was not a significant positive correlation between the birth and pregnancy complications and the MPA. The relationship between MPA and maternal age in these autistic children was investigated. In the 45 autistic children studied, there was a significant positive correlation between MPA and maternal age at birth. The significance of the relationship between MPA and maternal age deserves further study.

An electrophysiologic indication of auditory processing defects in autism.

Averaged evoked potentials (EPs) to clicks, random pitch changes (signals), and random deletions of stimuli within a regular train of tones were examined in five autistic and five normal children. Brainstem auditory EPs were abnormal in one of the autistic patients. The early cortical EP components P60 and N100 showed no differences across groups, whereas the P200 component of the cortical responses to clicks, as well as the late positive component (P300) to the pitch changes and deleted stimuli, were significantly smaller in the autistic subjects as a group. Furthermore, when P200 and P300 am

Thyroid hormone in autistic children.

Thyroid hormone plays an important role in the pre- and postnatal development and function of the central nervous system. Disturbances in thyroid hormone regulation have been hypothesized in childhood autism. We evaluated blood indices of thyroid function, including serum thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and thyroid-stimulating hormone, in a large population of autistic children. No differences were found between autistic and normal children.

Childhood autism and social class: a question of selection?

Children with typical autism, other early childhood psychoses and severe mental retardation without autistic behaviour were identified in an epidemiological study in an area of South East London. The social class distribution of their fathers was examined and no significant differences were found between the groups, nor in a comparison with the general population of the area. Fathers of children with autism and related conditions referred to an out-patient clinic with a special interest in autism, mostly at their own request, and fathers joining the National Society for Autistic Children, were

Minor physical anomalies in childhood autism. Part I. Their relationship to pre- and perinatal complications.

In a study of minor physical anomalies and pregnancy complications in autistic children, 45 probands and 52 of their siblings were investigated. While there was a significant association between autism on one hand and minor physical anomalies and pregnancy complications on the other, no such association was found between physical anomalies and pregnancy and birth complications. Further, autistic children with higher anomaly scores had lower IQs, more frequent hospitalizations, and a more normal family history compared to autistic children with lower physical anomaly scores.

[Nonprocess autism in children: comparative etiopathogenetic study].

Etiopathogenesis of the childhood autism syndrome of a non-process nature is discussed on the basis of a comparative study of 156 children aged from 3 to 16 years. In the etiological complex there is a prevalence of early exogenous-organic noxious factors, which is reflected in disturbances of mental divelopment, maturation of the system of hemispheric pair work. The data of follow-up studies and treatment confirm a conclusion about a residual-organic basis in the syndrome of childhood autism.
