[Leisure Opportunities for Autistic Children and Adolescents: How Satisfied are Parents and what do they Think their Children Would Like?].

Leisure Opportunities for Autistic Children and Adolescents: How Satisfied are Parents and what do they Think their Children Would Like? Like all children and youth, autistic children and adolescents have the right to participate in cultural life including recreational, leisure and sporting activities. Therefore, arrangements have to be made to ensure access to these areas for these particular population (Art. 30 UN-BRK, §§76, 78 BTHG). Thus far, no research has been conducted that examines the need for leisure time facilities for autistic children and/or adolescents in Germany. Therefore, it

Neuropsychopathology of Autism Spectrum Disorder: Complex Interplay of Genetic, Epigenetic, and Environmental Factors.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex heterogeneous consortium of pervasive development disorders (PDD) which ranges from atypical autism, autism, and Asperger syndrome affecting brain in the developmental stage. This debilitating neurodevelopmental disorder results in both core as well as associated symptoms. Core symptoms observed in autistic patients are lack of social interaction, pervasive, stereotyped, and restricted behavior while the associated symptoms include irritability, anxiety, aggression, and several comorbid disorders.ASD is a polygenic disorder and is multifactorial in o

Whole genome investigation of an atypical autism case identifies a novel ANOS1 mutation with subsequent diagnosis of Kallmann syndrome.

We report an actionable secondary finding from whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of a 10-year-old boy with autism. WGS identified non-synonymous variants in several genes, including a nonsense mutation in the ANOS1 gene which is an X-linked cause of Kallmann syndrome. WGS can provide insights into complex genetic disorders such as autism, and actionable incidental findings can offer the potential for therapeutic interventions.

[From pervasive developmental disorders in ICD-10 to Autism Spectrum Disorder in ICD-11].

From pervasive developmental disorder in ICD-10 to Autism Spectrum Disorder in ICD-11 Abstract. This article presents the new diagnostic classification of Autism Spectrum Disorder according to ICD-11 relative to the previous classification according to ICD-10, and DSM-5. It also provides some practical clinical advice regarding the value of multiaxial diagnostic classification. Because ICD-11 shows a high similarity to DSM-5, one may expect prevalence rates to be consolidated. Especially because the classification "atypical autism" has been dropped, prevalence rates may decrease following the

Complementary and alternative medicine use in adults with autism spectrum disorder in Germany: results from a multi-center survey.

BACKGROUND: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is widely used both in the general population and for the treatment of somatic and psychiatric disorders. Studies on CAM use among patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have so far only focused on children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate patterns of CAM use among adults with ASD. METHODS: A questionnaire survey concerning current and lifetime use of CAM was distributed to adults with ASD between November 2015 and June 2016. Participants diagnosed by experienced clinicians using the current diagnostic gol

High-functioning autism spectrum disorder with fluent speech and late-onset epilepsy: an unusual presentation of Inv-Dup (15) syndrome.

Many neuropsychiatric phenotypes have been reported in association with rearrangements in the 15q11-q13 region. Clinical presentations can include hypotonia, developmental delay, severe/moderate intellectual disabilities, poor expressive language, difficult to treat epilepsy, and autism spectrum disorders. Here we report an additional case of a girl with inversion duplication on chromosome 15 (Inv-Dup 15) showing a peculiar and milder clinical phenotype, including atypical high-functioning autism disorder, late onset and drug-responsive epilepsy, and a relatively good language development . A 22q13.33 duplication harbouring the SHANK3 gene: does it cause neuropsychiatric disorders?

A young man with neuropsychiatric problems has a small 22q13.33 duplication. We suggest this causes his condition. His disorder may represent a 22q13.33 behavioural phenotype. In childhood, he was diagnosed with mild intellectual disability. He was later diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, atypical autism spectrum disorder and bipolar disorder. Lithium seems effective in treating his affective symptoms. He has mild dysmorphic features, full lips and protruding ears. An array comparative genomic hybridisation showed a 300 kb duplication. The duplication harbours several genes, notably SH3 and mul

Psychosis in a Child with Atypical Autism: A Case Report and a Brief Review of the Association of Psychosis and Autism.

Recent studies have shown that individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at an increased risk of developing psychosis. Diagnosing psychosis in such individuals can be challenging when they present with symptoms at a young age. A careful history and thorough assessment are essential for proper diagnosis to avoid mislabeling certain behavioral problems encountered among children with ASD. We present the case of a 12-year-old child with atypical autism who developed psychotic symptoms that led to a diagnostic dilemma. Proper exploration of early childhood history, prompt treatment wi

Adaptive trajectories and early risk factors in the autism spectrum: A 15-year prospective study.

Little is known about long-term outcomes. We investigate the adaptive trajectories and their risk factors in ASD. Data were obtained from 281 children prospectively followed untill adulthood. The final sample consisted of 106 individuals. Vineland scores were collected at baseline (T1), 3 (T2), 10 (T3), and 15 (T4) years later. A group-based method was used to identify homogeneous patterns of adaptive skills trajectories. Results show that among the children initially categorized as autistic, 82.6% remained over the ADOS diagnostic threshold, 11.9% converted to atypical autism, and 5.4% fell u

Gait in children with infantile/atypical autism: Age-dependent decrease in gait variability and associations with motor skills.

Gait and its associations with prewalking motor milestones, motor skills, and age were investigated in 32 children with infantile/atypical autism and 36 typically developing controls. Gait was assessed using GAITRite recordings of spatiotemporal and variability gait parameters. Parents reported their child's prewalking motor milestones. Motor skills were assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children. Children with infantile/atypical autism showed higher gait variability than controls, indicating a less regular walking pattern. In children with infantile/atypical autism gait varia

Kynurenine Pathway in Autism Spectrum Disorders in Children.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that altered immune responses play a role in the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), together with dysfunction of the serotonergic and glutamatergic systems. Since the kynurenine (KYN) pathway that degrades tryptophan (TRP) is activated in various neuroinflammatory states, we aimed to determine whether this pathway is activated in ASD. METHODS: Sixty-five pediatric ASD patients (including 52 boys) were enrolled from an epidemiological survey covering 2 counties in Norway; 30 (46.5%) of these patients were diagnosed with childhood autism, 1

Increased risk for an atypical autism diagnosis following Thimerosal-containing vaccine exposure in the United States: A prospective longitudinal case-control study in the Vaccine Safety Datalink.

BACKGROUND: Thimerosal is an organic-mercury (Hg)-containing compound (49.55% Hg by weight) historically added to many multi-dose vials of vaccine as a preservative and still added to some vaccines today. Concerns about the toxic effects from Thimerosal-containing childhood vaccines and the risk of an atypical autism diagnosis were evaluated in this study. METHODS: A hypothesis-testing, prospective longitudinal, case-control study assessed exposure to Hg from Thimerosal-containing hepatitis B vaccines (TM-HepB) among cases diagnosed with atypical autism (n=164) and controls (n=15,216).
