Prescriber Attitudes, Experiences, and Proclivities Toward Digital Medicine and How They Influence Adoption of Digital Medicine Platforms.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric prescribers (prescribers) typically assess medication adherence by patient or caregiver self-report. Despite likely clinical benefit of a new digital medicine technology, the role of specific prescriber attitudes, behaviors, and experiences in the likelihood of adoption is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To identify prescriber characteristics that may affect adoption of the ingestible event marker (IEM) platform. DESIGN: A survey of prescribers treating seriously mentally ill patients was conducted. Factor analysis was performed on 11 items representing prescriber characteristics

Moral reasoning, emotion understanding, and callous-unemotional traits in early-to-middle childhood.

Relatively little is known about features of moral reasoning among young children with callous-unemotional (CU) traits (e.g., lack of guilt and empathy). This study tested associations between CU traits and emotion attributions (i.e., identification of others' emotional states) and justifications (i.e., explanations for those emotional states), across social scenarios involving discreet versus salient distress cues. The participants were boys aged 6-to-10 years (N = 50; Mage  = 7 years 7 months), who were interviewed about 12 hypothetical scenarios (eight with discreet and four with salient di

Effectiveness and safety of Wendan decoction for post-stroke depression: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke depression (PSD) refers to a series of affective disorder syndromes that occur after stroke and are often accompanied by physical symptoms. PSD presents with low mood and lack of interest as the main characteristics along with the symptoms of stroke. The physical symptoms of PSD include sleep disorder, loss of appetite, and reluctance to communicate. Although Wendan decoction has been suggested to be effective in the treatment of PSD, there is no meta-analysis providing evidence for the usefulness of Wendan decoction for treating PSD. METHODS: The following electronic

Evaluation of lipid metabolism imbalance in HIV-infected patients with metabolic disorders using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and highly active antiretroviral therapy use are associated with the disruption of lipid and glucose metabolism. Herein, a sensitive and robust high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the quantitation of lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) and acylcarnitines (ACs) in human blood serum was developed and validated to investigate them as markers of metabolic disorders in HIV-infected patients. Under optimal extraction and detection conditions, the lower limits of quantification reached 5 ng/mL (LPCs) and 0.1 ng/mL (ACs),

Tissue Plasminogen Activator in Central Nervous System Physiology and Pathology: From Synaptic Plasticity to Alzheimer's Disease.

Tissue plasminogen activator's (tPA) fibrinolytic function in the vasculature is well-established. This specific role for tPA in the vasculature, however, contrasts with its pleiotropic activities in the central nervous system. Numerous physiological and pathological functions have been attributed to tPA in the central nervous system, including neurite outgrowth and regeneration; synaptic and spine plasticity; neurovascular coupling; neurodegeneration; microglial activation; and blood-brain barrier permeability. In addition, multiple substrates, both plasminogen-dependent and -independent, hav

Biological, Psychological, and Social Determinants of Depression: A Review of Recent Literature.

Depression is one of the leading causes of disability, and, if left unmanaged, it can increase the risk for suicide. The evidence base on the determinants of depression is fragmented, which makes the interpretation of the results across studies difficult. The objective of this study is to conduct a thorough synthesis of the literature assessing the biological, psychological, and social determinants of depression in order to piece together the puzzle of the key factors that are related to this condition. Titles and abstracts published between 2017 and 2020 were identified in PubMed, as well as

Cortisol Levels in Infants with Central Coordination Disorders during Vojta Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Due to the decrease in the percentage of perinatal mortality, which is one of the Millennium Development Goals, the number of children with a central coordination disorder (CCD) has increased, present in up to 40% of premature babies. Neurodevelopmental disorders detected in the diagnostic process require early interventions that will eliminate or overcome existing dysfunctions. These treatments often cause discomfort in the infant, which induces insecurity and activation of basic defense mechanisms. The aim of the work is to assess changes in cortisol concentration in infants trea

Reliability, and Convergent and Discriminant Validity of Gaming Disorder Scales: A Meta-Analysis.

Background: An association between gaming disorder (GD) and the symptoms of common mental disorders is unraveled yet. In this preregistered study, we quantitatively synthesized reliability, convergent and discriminant validity of GD scales to examine association between GD and other constructs. Methods: Five representative GD instruments (GAS-7, AICA, IGDT-10, Lemmens IGD-9, and IGDS9-SF) were chosen based on recommendations by the previous systematic review study to conduct correlation meta-analyses and reliability generalization. A systematic literature search was conducted through Pubmed, P

Screen Use and Mental Health Symptoms in Canadian Children and Youth During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

IMPORTANCE: Longitudinal research on specific forms of electronic screen use and mental health symptoms in children and youth during COVID-19 is minimal. Understanding the association may help develop policies and interventions targeting specific screen activities to promote healthful screen use and mental health in children and youth. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether specific forms of screen use (television [TV] or digital media, video games, electronic learning, and video-chatting time) were associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, conduct problems, irritability, hyperactivity, and i

Expert Evaluation of Strategies to Modernize Newborn Screening in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: Novel therapies, including cell and gene therapies, can radically improve outcomes among patients with rare disorders, especially if provided early. Newborn screening (NBS) could support early access to novel therapies, but the speed of new therapy development is a disruptive event for which the public health NBS system and state newborn screening programs are unprepared. OBJECTIVE: To identify and evaluate possible solutions for modernizing NBS. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this survey study, NBS experts representing clinical research, federal or state advisory boards,

Callous-unemotional traits in adolescents moderate neural network associations with empathy.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits in adolescents are a dimensional construct involving a symptom subset of empathy impairments amongst broader affective deficits. Higher CU trait scores associate with less cognitive and affective empathy; and brain regions linked with cognitive and affective empathy show aberrant function in those with CU traits. How CU traits impact the relationship between brain function and both cognitive and affective empathy in adolescents is less clear. Here we examine how functional properties of networks that support cognitive and affective empathy is moderated by CU tra

Shared and Unshared Feature Extraction in Major Depression During Music Listening Using Constrained Tensor Factorization.

Ongoing electroencephalography (EEG) signals are recorded as a mixture of stimulus-elicited EEG, spontaneous EEG and noises, which poses a huge challenge to current data analyzing techniques, especially when different groups of participants are expected to have common or highly correlated brain activities and some individual dynamics. In this study, we proposed a data-driven shared and unshared feature extraction framework based on nonnegative and coupled tensor factorization, which aims to conduct group-level analysis for the EEG signals from major depression disorder (MDD) patients and healt

Probiotics in irritable bowel syndrome - is the quest for the right strain over? Rapid review of existing guidelines and recommendations.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) - functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGIDs) and disorder of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs) - has emerged as an important medical problem with an impact on health care systems, affecting patients' quality of life. The management of IBS consists of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments; however, the data of their long-term efficacy are scarce. Modulation of gastrointestinal microbiota, by means of probiotics and prebiotics, is often sought and advertised as a popular treatment modality in IBS. Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) awaits recommenda

Characterizing opioid-involved overdose risk in local communities: An opioid overdose vulnerability assessment across Indiana, 2017.

The objective of this initiative was to conduct a comprehensive opioid overdose vulnerability assessment in Indiana and evaluate spatial accessibility to opioid use disorder treatment, harm reduction services, and opioid response programs. We compiled 2017 county-level (n = 92) data on opioid-related and socioeconomic indicators from publicly available state and federal sources. First, we assessed the spatial distribution of opioid-related indicators in a geographic information system (GIS). Next, we used a novel regression-weighted ranking approach with mean standardized covariates and an opi
