Substance use diagnoses among patients who present to federally run mental health facilities with co-morbid ADHD and bipolar disorder between 2013-2023: a national analysis using random forest methods.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although substance use disorder is common in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or bipolar disorder, limited recent data exist for those with these co-occurring conditions. Our study analyzes recent trends and predictors of these diagnoses. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of 2013-2023 Mental Health Client-Level Data, identifying patients with co-morbid ADHD and bipolar disorder and their SUD prevalence. Joinpoint regression was used to analyze trends, and random forest models identified the most important predictors. RESULTS: Between 2013

Clinical neurophysiology of tics.

Clinical neurophysiology constitutes a relevant tool for clinicians in movement disorders since it expands their characterization beyond clinically observable features and supports their diagnosis. Although the field has yet to identify a specific neurophysiologic marker for the diagnosis of tics, neurophysiology serves as a valuable tool for clinicians in differentiating tics from other hyperkinetic disorders. Beside diagnosis, recent years have witnessed the emergence of two primary domains in which neurophysiology plays a pivotal role in the realm of tic disorders: investigating the pathoph

Genetic Association of Sexual Behavior, Sildenafil, and Hormonal Contraceptives With Mental Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The observational research indicates that risky sexual activities contribute to the development of mental disorders. However, the potential causal effects of sexual behaviors, sildenafil use, and hormonal contraceptive use on mental disorders remain unclear. METHODS: We applied two-sample Mendelian randomization (univariable and multivariable MR) to assess the effects of age at first sex (AFS) and number of sexual partners (NSP) on mental disorders and sex differences, using Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) data from UK Biobank and FinnGen. How do I Know That the Jerks I See Are Tics?

Tics are prevalent hyperkinesias that are most often encountered in the context of a primary tic disorder, as in Tourette syndrome. Although their recognition is typically straightforward, they often share some phenomenological features with other jerky hyperkinesias and may be mislabeled as such. These include myoclonic jerks, dystonia, chorea, stereotypies, as well as functional movement disorders. Here we discuss specific clues from clinical history and highlight relevant phenomenological qualities of tics, as well as their differences from other hyperkinetic disorders. We also showcase a b

Transformer-based structural connectivity networks for ADHD-related connectivity alterations.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects behavior, attention, and learning. Current diagnoses rely heavily on subjective assessments, underscoring the need for objective imaging-based methods. This study aims to explore whether structural connectivity networks derived from MRI can reveal alterations associated with ADHD and support data-driven understanding. METHODS: We collected brain MRI data from 947 individuals (aged 7-26 years; 590 males, 356 females, 1 unspecified) across eight centers, sourced from the Neuro Bureau

What Can Adults With ADHD Tell Us About Their Experiences? A Review of Qualitative Methods to Map a New Research Agenda.

OBJECTIVES: Although ADHD has its roots in childhood, significant symptoms persist into adulthood for more than half of individuals. Adults with ADHD are heterogeneous in terms of symptom presentations, impairment domains, and relative strengths. Consequently, it is essential to better understand the diverse self-perceptions and experiences of adults with ADHD; qualitative methods are a valuable complement to quantitative work in this area. Our aim is to provide a scoping review of qualitative studies on adults with ADHD to articulate the current status of the field and establish future resear

Detecting noncredible symptomology in ADHD evaluations using machine learning.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic evaluations for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are becoming increasingly complicated by the number of adults who fabricate or exaggerate symptoms. Novel methods are needed to improve the assessment process required to detect these noncredible symptoms. The present study investigated whether unsupervised machine learning (ML) could serve as one such method, and detect noncredible symptom reporting in adults undergoing ADHD evaluations. METHOD: Participants were 623 adults who underwent outpatient ADHD evaluations. Patients' scores from symptom validity

Neurodevelopmental burden in young adults undergoing opioid substitution therapy: The role of inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is recognized as a condition that can persist into adulthood, often with psychiatric comorbidities that worsen the overall prognosis. ADHD has been associated with substance use disorders (SUDs), especially through symptoms like hyperactivity and impulsivity, while the role of inattentive symptoms remains more difficult to judge. This study aimed to estimate the likelihood of ADHD in a sample of young adults with SUDs undergoing opioid agonist treatment, and to evaluate how inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive traits a

Qualitative Ascriptions of Autistic Behavior by Non-Autistic College Students.

In studies that assess perceptions of autistic people by non-autistic people, researchers often ask participants to review vignettes depicting fictional autistic characters. However, few studies have investigated whether non-autistic peers accurately identify these hypothetical individuals as being on the autism spectrum. Accurately ascribing autism as a cause of depicted behaviors likely influences perceptions about autistic peers. In this study, 469 college students (Mage = 18.62; 79.3% female) ascribed cause(s) of an autistic peers' behaviors as depicted in a written vignette. We reviewed a
