[Adaptive and Maladaptive Strategies of Emotion Regulation in Adolescents with ADHD].

The present study investigated differences between adolescents with ADHD and control subjects in their adaptive und maladaptive regulation of negative emotions. We assessed emotion regulation strategies using the German self-report questionnaire FEEL-KJ in a sample of adolescents (between 11 and 18 years) with ADHD (disturbance of activity, impulsivity and attention: n = 32, hyperkinetic conduct disorder: n = 26) and controls (n = 58). We found that adolescents with ADHD reported using less adaptive strategies for dealing with negative emotions than control subjects. No effects were found for

[Pantogam augmentation in hyperkinetic behavior disorder treatment].

A clinical case of a child with hyperkinetic conduct disorder is presented, with symptoms of hyperkinetic disorder itself closely intertwining with symptoms of conduct disorder. The qualitative changes in the child's condition are noted, including not only achieved control over the symptoms, but also improved social functioning level, achieved by means of Pantogam (neuroprotective drug) addition to atomoxetine therapy. The proposed strategy can contribute to improvement of treatment results for children with certain clinical types of hyperkinetic conduct disorder.

Adjunctive Amantadine Treatment for Aggressive Behavior in Children: A Series of Eight Cases.

PURPOSE: Amantadine has a growing body of evidence for the treatment of aggressive behavior in patients with traumatic brain injury, autism spectrum disorder, and developmental disability. We describe our experience with adjunctive amantadine treatment for aggressive behavior in eight hospitalized children. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of psychiatric inpatients initiated on amantadine for the management of aggressive behavior. RESULTS: The majority of patients were male (n = 7) ranging in age from 6 to 10 years (mean 8.5). The most common diagnoses were attention-defici

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for a 9-Year-Old Girl With Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder.

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) is a relatively new diagnosis in the field of childhood onset disorders. Characterized by both behavior and mood disruption, DMDD is a purportedly unique clinical presentation with few relevant treatment studies to date. The current case study presents the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for anger and aggression in a 9-year-old girl with DMDD, co-occurring attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and a history of unspecified anxiety disorder. At the time of intake evaluation, she demonstrated three to four temper outbursts

Group A Streptococcal Infections Are Associated With Increased Risk of Pediatric Neuropsychiatric Disorders: A Taiwanese Population-Based Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the association between group A streptococcal (GAS) infections and the risks of developing tic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: We conducted a follow-up cohort study in 2014 using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. The study cohort consisted of patients younger than 18 years with newly diagnosed GAS infection (ICD-9-CM codes 034 [streptococcal sore throat and scarlet fever] and 482.31 [pneumonia due to Streptococcus, group A]) from 2001 to 2010. Deep Brain Stimulation in a Case of Mitochondrial Disease.

BACKGROUND: DBS has proven to be an effective therapy for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and primary dystonia. Mixed results have been reported in case series for other hyperkinetic disorders, and sparse data are available regarding secondary movement disorders. We report on the clinical effects of bilateral globus pallidus internus (GPi) DBS, a progressive mitochondrial cytopathy. METHODS: A single patient with myoclonus and dystonia syndrome secondary to a mitochondrial cytopathy with history of perinatal hypoxia was identified from our University of Florida DBS database. Trends in subthreshold psychiatric diagnoses for youth in community treatment.

IMPORTANCE: Patterns and trends of subthreshold DSM-IV mental health diagnoses for youth within US community treatment settings merit systematic research. OBJECTIVE: To quantify and assess temporal patterns of DSM-IV diagnoses not otherwise specified (NOS) among youth during physician office visits. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a retrospective study using psychiatric diagnostic data from the US National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (n = 16,295) from 1999 through 2010, combined in 4-year intervals. The 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion syndrome: a review.

Patients with the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion can present with developmental and language delay, neurobehavioral disturbances and psychiatric problems. Autism, seizures, schizophrenia and mild dysmorphic features are less commonly seen. The 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion involving four genes (i.e., TUBGCP5, CYFIP1, NIPA1, NIPA2) is emerging as a recognized syndrome with a prevalence ranging from 0.57%-1.27% of patients presenting for microarray analysis which is a two to four fold increase compared with controls. Review of clinical features from about 200 individuals were grouped into five ca

The impact of ADHD symptoms and global impairment in childhood on working disability in mid-adulthood: a 28-year follow-up study using official disability pension records in a high-risk in-patient population.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with ADHD have been associated with more employment difficulties in early adulthood than healthy community controls. To examine whether this association is attributable specifically to disturbance of activity and attention (ADHD) or to psychopathology in general, we wanted to extend existing research by comparing the rate of mid-adulthood working disabilities for individuals diagnosed with ADHD as children with the rate for clinical controls diagnosed with either conduct disorder, emotional disorder or mixed disorder of conduct and emotions. METHODS: Former Norwegian c

Preparation and evaluation of tetrabenazine enantiomers and all eight stereoisomers of dihydrotetrabenazine as VMAT2 inhibitors.

Tetrabenazine (TBZ) ((±)-1) and dihydrotetrabenazines (DHTBZ) are potent inhibitors of VMAT2. Herein, a practical chemical resolution of (±)-1 and stereoselective synthesis of all eight DHTBZ stereoisomers are described. The result of VMAT2 binding assay revealed that (+)-1 (Ki=4.47 nM) was 8000-fold more potent than (-)-1 (Ki=36,400 nM). Among all eight DHTBZ stereoisomers, (2R,3R,11bR)-DHTBZ ((+)-2: Ki=3.96 nM) showed the greatest affinity for VMAT2. The (3R,11bR)-configuration appeared to play a key role for VMAT2 binding. In summary, (+)-1, (+)-2, and their derivatives warrant further stud

Prospective association of childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use and abuse/dependence: a meta-analytic review.

Given the clinical and public health significance of substance disorders and the need to identify their early risk factors, we examined the association of childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with substance use (nicotine, alcohol, marijuana) and abuse/dependence outcomes (nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, other). To strengthen a potential causal inference, we meta-analyzed longitudinal studies that prospectively followed children with and without ADHD into adolescence or adulthood. Children with ADHD were significantly more likely to have ever used nicotine and other

The effects of attention on age-related relational memory deficits: fMRI evidence from a novel attentional manipulation.

Numerous studies have documented that older adults (OAs) do not perform as well as young adults (YAs) when task demands require the establishment or retrieval of a novel link between previously unrelated information (relational memory: RM). Nonetheless, the source of this age-related RM deficit remains unspecified. One of the most widely investigated factors is an age-related reduction in attentional resources. To investigate this factor, previous researchers have tested whether dividing YAs' attention during encoding equated their RM performance to that of OAs. However, results from these stu

[The effect of social and monetary reward on inhibitory control in boys with hyperkinetic conduct disorder].

OBJECTIVE: Social reinforcement can improve inhibitory control in boys with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), suggesting that hyperkinetic conduct disorder (ADHD + CD/ODD), a combination of ADHD and conduct disorder (CD)/oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), might show similar improvements. This study investigated the effects of social and monetary reward on response inhibition in boys with ADHD + CD/ODD compared to healthy controls. METHOD: An incentive go/no-go task was applied. We hypothesized that the control group (n = 17) would show greater improvements in inhibitory contr

The impact of ADHD and conduct disorder in childhood on adult delinquency: a 30 years follow-up study using official crime records.

BACKGROUND: Few longitudinal studies have explored lifetime criminality in adults with a childhood history of severe mental disorders. In the present study, we wanted to explore the association between adult delinquency and several different childhood diagnoses in an in-patient population. Of special interest was the impact of disturbance of activity and attention (ADHD) and mixed disorder of conduct and emotions on later delinquency, as these disorders have been variously associated with delinquent development. METHODS: Former Norwegian child psychiatric in-patients (n = 541) were followed u

[Bipolar disorders as co-morbidity in childhood and adolescence--underdiagnosed or overinterpreted? Therapy of a 14-year-old boy with hyperkinetic conduct disorder and hypomania].

OBJECTIVE: Considerable debate exists regarding differing prevalence rates of co-morbid bipolar disorder in children and adolescents with ADHD in Germany as compared to the US. METHODS: Described in this case report are the assessment of and treatment procedure for a 14-year old boy with hyperkinetic conduct disorder and co-morbid hypomanic episode, as well as different possible interpretations of symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Further studies of children and adolescents with ADHD and coexisting impulsive-aggressive behaviour are needed. Important in practice is a precise differentiation of symptoms

Electrophysiologic assessments of involuntary movements: tremor and myoclonus.

Tremor is defined as a rhythmical, involuntary oscillatory movement of a body part. Although neurological examination reveals information regarding its frequency, regularity, amplitude, and activation conditions, the electrophysiological investigations help in confirming the tremor, in differentiating it from other hyperkinetic disorders like myoclonus, and may provide etiological clues. Accelerometer with surface electromyogram (EMG) can be used to document the dominant frequency of a tremor, which may be useful as certain frequencies are more characteristic of specific etiologies than others

Tetrabenazine.

BACKGROUND: Tetrabenazine (TBZ) depletes presynaptic dopamine in the CNS. It has been found to be beneficial in hyperkinetic movement disorders without carrying the extrapyramidal side effects that are characteristic of neuroleptics. OBJECTIVE: To summarize current knowledge on the use of TBZ and draw conclusions about its efficacy and safety. METHODS: PubMed literature searches using the term 'tetrabenazine' were carried out for the period prior to May 2009. Additional relevant studies referenced by these publications were included. CONCLUSIONS: Both short- and long-term studies have consi
