Association of ADHD and conduct disorder--brain electrical evidence for the existence of a distinct subtype.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the impact of psychopathological comorbidity with oppositional defiant/conduct disorder (ODD/CD) on brain electrical correlates in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to study the pathophysiological background of comorbidity of ADHD+ODD/CD. METHOD: Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a cued continuous performance test (CPT-A-X) in children (aged 8 to 14 years) with ICD-10 diagnoses of either hyperkinetic disorder (HD; n = 15), hyperkinetic conduct disorder (HCD; n = 16), or ODD/CD (n = 15) and normal children (n = 18). Questioning inhibitory control as the specific deficit of ADHD--evidence from brain electrical activity.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate motor response control during a cued continuous performance test (CPT-A-X) by performance and ERP parameters in children with hyperkinetic disorder (HD), hyperkinetic conduct disorder (HCD) or oppositional deviant/conduct disorder (ODD/CD), to examine the evidence for an inhibition-specific deficit as indicated by these parameters, and to analyze whether possible deviations are specific for HD/HCD. METHOD: Behavioral parameters and event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a CPT-A-X-task in children (aged 8 to 14 years) with either HD (n = 15), HCD (n = 16

Psychiatric disorders in children with intellectual disability.

We investigated psychiatric disorders in intellectually disabled children; the prevalence rate and types of psychiatric disorders, and the association of psychiatric disorders with sex, residence type, level of disability, and epilepsy were examined. The population comprised 155 intellectually disabled children. Medical information was obtained from case files, which indicated that a psychiatric disorder had previously been diagnosed for 11% of patients. A careful re-examination of the case files revealed a psychiatric disorder for 33%. The criteria of a psychiatric ICD-10 diagnosis were fulfi

Characterization of children of bipolar parents by parent report CBCL.

In past research the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) has differentiated among various diagnostic categories for children and adolescents. However, research has not been conducted on whether the CBCL differentiates among diagnostic categories for children at high risk for development of psychopathology. This study compares four diagnostic groups [bipolar disorder (BD), attention/deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Depressed/Anxious and No Diagnosis] within a cohort of 58 children of bipolar parents to determine whether their CBCL scores will replicate the scores of children not at high risk

Attention-deficit disorder and conduct disorder in girls: evidence for a familial subtype.

BACKGROUND: The frequent comorbidity between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) raises the possibility that ADHD+CD is a distinct and separate condition. METHODS: We tested hypotheses about patterns of familial association between ADHD, CD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and adult antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Using family study methodology in a sample of girls, we found 11 children with diagnoses of ADHD+ CD, 39 with ADHD+ODD, and 90 with ADHD only. These were compared with 122 non-ADHD, non-CD control probands. Familial risk analysis was

How unspecified are disorders of children with a pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified? A study of social problems in children with PDD-NOS and ADHD.

This study examines possible differences and similarities between social behaviour problems in children with problems classified as pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and a group of children with problems classified as ADHD, as measured by parent questionnaires. The instruments involved were the CBCL (Child Behaviour Checklist), the ABC (Autism Behaviour Checklist) and a new instrument: the CSBQ (Children's Social Behaviour Questionnaire). In comparing the PDD-NOS group and the ADHD group, the results show that, according to parent reports, both groups have seve

Comparison of conduct disorder and hyperkinetic conduct disorder : a retrospective clinial study from north India.

In a retrospective descriptive study of hyperkinetic conduct disorders (HCD) and conduct disorders (CD), as per ICD-10 diagnostic criteria, their clinical and phenomenological correlates were compared; with an aim of describing their distinctive clinical profiles. 20 cases of HCD and 25 cases of CD were compared on socio-demographic variables, temperament and specified clinical variables. The two groups differed in terms of the HCD group having younger age of onset, a more gradual development of and longer duration of conduct symptoms as compared to CD children. HCD children also had temperame

Clinical evaluation of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder by objective quantitative measures.

This study assessed the diagnostic potential of the actigraph, the Continuous Performance Test, and the Matching Familiar Figures Test in diagnosing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Twenty boys previously diagnosed with ADHD and 52 controls were examined. By these measures the boys with ADHD were differentiated from the controls with sensitivity and specificity above 75%. We were able to classify ADHD into eight subtypes by combining the scores of the actigraph and the CPT: "hyperactive-impulsive", "hyperactive-inattentive", "impulsive-inattentive", "hyperactive", "impulsive",

The metabolic anatomy of Tourette's syndrome.

The functional brain networks underlying the clinical manifestations of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) are currently unknown. To identify these networks, we studied TS patients and normal subjects with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and PET employing a statistical model of regional metabolic covariation. We studied 10 TS patients (mean age, 41.5 +/- 12.7 years) who were either drug naive or medication free for at least 2 years. Ten normal volunteers (mean age, 42.5 +/- 11.5) served as controls. We used quantitative FDG/PET to calculate global, regional, and normalized rates of glucose met

Attention deficit disorder and conduct disorder: longitudinal evidence for a familial subtype.

BACKGROUND: An obstacle to the successful classification of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the frequently reported co-morbidity between ADHD and conduct disorder (CD). Prior work suggested that from a familial perspective, ADHD children with CD may be aetiologically distinct from those without CD. METHODS: Using family study methodology and three longitudinal assessments over 4 years, we tested hypotheses about patterns of familial association between ADHD, CD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and adult antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). RESULTS: At the 4-year fol

Psychiatric morbidity among rural primary school children in west bengal.

Psychiatric morbidity in primary rural school children (n=460) was studied with the use of Rutter-B-Scale, a screening instrument. Overall prevalence was found to be 33.3 percent. Conduct disorder was found to be the commonest diagnostic category with a prevalence rate of 13.5%. This was followed by mental retardation with a rate of 5.4%, enuresis 4%, simple disturbance of activity and attention 3.1%, and relationship problem 2.7%. The results have been discussed in a cross-cultural perspective.

[Attention deficit/hyperactivity. Diagnostic criteria and classification].

General problems regarding diagnostic criteria and classification of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder are discussed. A comparison of the most recent versions of the present diagnostic systems shows that they have converged and now overlap each other considerably. ICD-10 (clinical criteria) is still descriptive. DCR-10 (ICD-10's criteria for research) and DSM-IV both have operational criteria. The symptom lists of DCR-10 and DSM-IV are almost identical, and the criteria are very similar. The divisions into types, however, are very different, and none can be recommended. In clinical prac

Frequent reward eliminates differences in activity between hyperkinetic rats and controls.

The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is a strain that is a potential animal model of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)/childhood hyperkinesis/disturbance of activity and attention, as SHR exhibit both hyperactivity and attention problems. Altered reinforcement (reward) processes have been suggested as the mechanism for the development of hyperactivity in SHR and ADHD. The purpose of the present study was to analyze basic reinforcement and response processes in the hyperactive SHR and in the progenitor Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) control strain. The results show that differences betwee

Psychiatric morbidity in a Chinese primary school in Hong Kong.

The psychiatric morbidity among 718 Chinese primary school children from a lower middle social class area in Hong Kong was studied, using a two-stage design. The screening procedures included two parts, a multi-component scale and a battery of probing questions. The screening procedures achieved an overall sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 97%. The findings on prevalence were: (i) a total prevalence of all definite psychiatric cases of 16.3%; (ii) prevalence according to diagnostic categories: emotional disorder, 8.8%; conduct disorder, 2.0%; mixed disturbance of emotion and conduct, 3.0

Conduct disorder and hyperactivity: II. A cluster analytic approach to the identification of a behavioural syndrome.

Sixty boys, aged from 6 to 10 years, were studied after their referral to psychiatric clinics for antisocial or disruptive behaviour. Their scores on reliable measures of hyperactivity, defiant behaviour, emotional disorder and attention deficit were taken for the home, school and clinic settings; and subjected to two techniques of cluster analysis. Both gave a similar set of clusters, one of which had high scores on all measures of hyperactivity and attention deficit. Membership of this cluster was associated with a lower IQ, a younger age of problem onset and referral, an abnormal neurologic
