Prevalence, comorbidity, and demographic patterns of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder in Chinese children and adolescents: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of major disruptive behavior disorders such as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) has not been fully described in Chinese youth, and their respective patterns are also understudied. This systematic review was conducted to explore prevalence rates, comorbidity, and demographic characteristics of ODD and CD in Chinese children and adolescents. METHODS: A thorough search of international databases revealed 19 peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2016 and 2025 that were pertinent and met the eligibility standards. The findings

Correlates of alcohol use and alcohol use disorder among youth with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased prevalence of alcohol use and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in youth with bipolar disorder (BD), little is known about the clinical correlates of this comorbidity. METHODS: Participants included 250 youth aged 13-20 years with BD (n = 135 with no alcohol use; n = 76 with alcohol use; and n = 39 with lifetime AUD). Multinomial logistic regression examined associations between demographic and clinical characteristics and alcohol use group (reference: no alcohol use), adjusting for age and sex. Binary logistic regression compared the alcohol use and AUD groups. RESULT

A multidisciplinary intervention targeting pragmatic language and maternal flexibility in Egyptian children with oppositional defiant disorder.

BACKGROUND: Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a multifaceted behavioral condition with a growing theoretical and empirical foundation regarding its etiology, risk factors, comorbidities, and developmental trajectories. This complexity necessitates integrated management strategies that simultaneously address co-occurring domains, such as child pragmatic language deficits and maternal psychological inflexibility, beyond the scope of conventional interventions like standard Parent Management Training (PMT). This study aims to determine the outcome of an intervention program that targeted pra

A multi-layer similarity approach for analyzing ADHD symptomology and assessment methods considering DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.

AIM: Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental-condition characterized by two symptom-domains, inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, as per DSM-5. Prior research, indicates conceptual-overlap among symptoms within each domain, potentially compromising the diagnostic utility of symptom structure itself. This structural redundancy has direct implications for evaluation of ADHD-screening-tools, which already show substantial heterogeneity in item-content and focus. While full psychometric-validation is resource-intensive, assessing tool alignment with DSM-5 offe

Comorbidities Among Mental Disorders in Preschool Children in the Mercy Pregnancy Emotional Wellbeing Study.

BackgroundComorbidities among mental disorders can have long-term impacts on children's development and mental health. There is little robust data about the prevalence of comorbidities in preschool-aged children. The aim was to identify the prevalence of comorbidities among mental disorders in a cohort of 3-4-year-old children in Australia.MethodsWomen were recruited to the Australian Mercy Pregnancy Emotional Wellbeing Study at <20 weeks' gestation. Mental disorders were assessed among their children at 3- to 4-years old using the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment (PAPA). Prevalence of com

High-risk adolescents admitted to acute inpatient psychiatric care: a retrospective clinical analysis of severe externalizing psychopathology and readmission.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents requiring acute inpatient psychiatric care for severe behavioral and emotional dysregulation represent one of the most clinically vulnerable populations within child and adolescent mental health services. While international studies have documented high rates of psychiatric morbidity among adolescents presenting with externalizing pathology and crisis-related admissions, region-specific data from Central and Eastern Europe remain limited. This study aimed to characterize the clinical mental health profile of high-risk adolescents admitted to acute inpatient psychiatric

Using machine learning to identify the strongest personal, school, and family correlates of youth mental health and well-being.

Research has identified numerous personal, school, and family factors associated with youth mental health, yet it remains unclear which correlates best predict mental health outcomes accurately. This study used machine learning to identify the strongest personal, school, and family correlates of mental well-being, overall mental health problems, and internalizing (anxiety and depression) and externalizing (attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder) symptoms among school-age children and youth and examines whether associations vary across

Association between genetic polymorphisms in circadian cycle genes (PER2, PER3, and HCRTR2) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) remains a neurodevelopmental condition with an incompletely understood etiology, despite evident genetic influences. Disruptions in the circadian cycle and sleep disturbances have been implicated in ADHD. This case-control study aimed to examine the presence of genetic polymorphisms in circadian cycle genes among ADHD patients. Using TaqMan real-time PCR, eight SNPs within circadian cycle genes were analyzed in a sample of 161 Brazilian children and adolescents, comprising 94 ADHD cases and 67 controls. A significant proportion of individuals wit

Children's oppositional defiant disorder and mother-child interpersonal brain synchrony: the role of maternal meta-emotion philosophy.

BACKGROUND: Parent-child interpersonal brain synchrony (IBS) has been suggested to play an important role in children's socio-emotional functioning and may be relevant to oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Yet, empirical evidence regarding IBS deficits between parents and ODD children remains limited, as well as their association with ODD symptoms within different emotional parenting contexts. Therefore, the present study investigated the IBS among mother-child dyads by utilizing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and the moderating role of maternal meta-emotion philosophy between

Steroid/thyroid hormones and inflammatory markers in adolescents with ADHD: comparisons with healthy controls and modifications by methylphenidate.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that neuroendocrine and inflammatory mechanisms may contribute to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) pathophysiology, although findings in adolescents and the effects of methylphenidate (MPH) remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the baseline profile of activating hormones and levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and their changes after treatment with methylphenidate (MPH) in adolescents with ADHD, in comparison with controls. METHODS: Eighty-one adolescents (40 with ADHD and 41 healthy controls) were evaluated. Morning serum c

How do parents and teachers predict oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder in primary school children?

This study examined the diagnostic accuracy of parent and teacher reports for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) in 417 primary school children. Using the Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale (DBDRS) and a semistructured diagnostic interview, both informant groups were also asked about children's overall functioning. A best estimate procedure-combining all reports, interviews, and impairment ratings-served as the gold standard. Both parents and teachers predicted ODD and CD similarly and accurately. For girls, parents significantly predicted better ODD symptoms
