Emotion dysregulation in children and adolescents with externalizing disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Externalizing disorders (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD)) are frequent among children and adolescents referred to mental health services. Despite numerous studies linking emotion dysregulation to both severity and symptoms of externalizing disorders, the strength of the relationship is unclear. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the correlation between emotion dysregulation (deficits in emotion regulation and emotional lability) and symptoms of externalizing disorders. Mediating the Verbal Ability-Conduct Problems Relationship with Child Empathy and Self-Control.

This study was performed in an effort to determine whether poor inhibitory control, operationalized as weak verbal skills, contributes to early antisocial behavior by impeding a child's ability to empathize with others and exercise control over their behavior. A model was tested whereby child empathy and self-control were conceptualized as mediators of a putative relationship between low verbal ability and future conduct problems. A mediation analysis was performed in which the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), a measure of auditory comprehension skills, receptive vocabulary, and verbal

Family-Focused Digital Mental Health Care for Pediatric Oppositional Symptoms and Caregiver Outcomes: Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oppositional symptoms in youth are characterized by an angry or irritable mood and excessive defiance (eg, arguing), negatively impacting the mental well-being of children, adolescents, and their caregivers. Pediatric digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) that approach care from a whole-family perspective may effectively address mental health (MH) symptoms in both pediatric participants and their caregivers, though this has not been explored in the context of oppositional symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess oppositional symptoms in children and adole

Is sexism associated with the use of relational aggression by young adults? The moderating effect of gender.

Relational aggression refers to behaviors intended to harm a target's social relationships either in response to a threat (reactive form) or with an ulterior motive (proactive form). The use of relational aggression is associated with internalizing symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and somatic complaints, as well as externalizing problems including conduct disorder symptoms, attention problems and oppositional defiant disorder symptoms (Murray-Close et al., 2016). Considering these consequences, the factors that may explain the use of relational aggression need to be explored. By adopting

Neurodevelopmental Phenotypes and Brain Anomalies in Individuals With Heterozygous SEMA6A Variants.

SEMA6A is a transmembrane protein that plays a role in axon guidance and cell migration. Sema6a null mice have cerebral anatomical defects and altered social interactions and working memory. However, the phenotypes associated with loss of SEMA6A function have not been clearly defined in humans. Here we describe 11 individuals who are heterozygous for putatively damaging variants affecting SEMA6A. All of these individuals (100%) had neurodevelopmental phenotypes that included developmental delay, intellectual disability, and/or autism spectrum disorder. Abnormal behaviors were seen in 73% with

The associations between screen time and mental health in children aged 0-12: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: : It is advised that children up to two years of age avoid any screen time (i.e., using digital screens), that those between the ages of two and five years should not exceed one hour per day, and that children aged five to 12 years should only have access to two hours of screen time per day. However, in the digital age, parents find it difficult to control the time their children spend on screens. AIM: : This article aimed to systematically synthesise the evidence on the associations between screen time and mental health outcomes in children aged 0 to 12 years. METHOD: : A system

Psychiatric and neurological predictors of early ADHD medication discontinuation across the lifespan: a multinational study.

BACKGROUND: Early discontinuation of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication is common and linked to worse outcomes. Identifying clinical predictors could aid personalised treatment yet evidence is inconsistent across ages and countries/regions. OBJECTIVE: Investigate psychiatric and neurological comorbidity as predictors of early ADHD medication discontinuation in new ADHD medication users across age groups, sex and countries/regions. METHODS: Using health records from eight countries/regions, we identified 1 000 411 (44% female) new ADHD medication users (2011-2020). Dis

Shared genetic and environmental influences between the broad avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder phenotype and neurodevelopmental traits: a twin study.

IMPORTANCE: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding and eating disorder characterized by extremely restricted dietary variety and/or quantity resulting in significant physical health impairment and psychosocial dysfunction. ARFID frequently co-occurs with neurodevelopmental conditions, yet the extent to which this co-occurrence reflects shared genetic or environmental influences remains largely unknown, as few twin or genetic studies of ARFID have been conducted. OBJECTIVE: To examine the extent to which genetic and environmental influences contribute to the association

Association between problematic smartphone use and gaming and disruptive behavioral disorder symptoms among Korean adolescents: a nationwide representative study.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smart device use is a growing public health concern among adolescents and is often associated with disruptive behavioral disorders (DBDs). However, little is known about how these associations depend on parental and residential factors in nationally representative populations. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2022 Korean National Mental Health Survey of Children and Adolescents. The analysis was performed on the data of adolescents aged 12-17 years who completed the DBD questionnaire (n=3,084 for problematic smartphone use [PSU]; n=2,393 for problematic gaming [PG]

Growing Up with Parents Who Smoke: Genetic and Environmental Effects on Offspring Substance Use and Externalizing Psychopathology From a 20-Year Minnesota Study of Adoptive Families.

In celebration of Matt McGue's career, we conducted a longitudinal extension of a simple and elegant study he supervised nearly two decades ago (Keyes et al. 2008). We examined the effects of teenage exposure to parental smoking on substance use and externalizing outcomes in an adoption study. In total, 1232 offspring from 617 families were longitudinally assessed at mean ages of 15, 18, 22, and 32 years, with 37% of offspring living with at least one smoking parent at the intake assessment. We tested the effect of this exposure on offspring tobacco and cannabis use; nicotine, alcohol, and dru

ADHD Symptom Severity and Oppositional Defiant Behavior: Divergent Structural Pathways Across Clinical and Non-Clinical Populations-A Multi-Group Path Analysis Investigation.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects 5%-7% of school-aged children globally and is characterized by a 40%-60% comorbidity rate with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Irritability has emerged as a key transdiagnostic construct linking ADHD severity to oppositional defiant behavior (ODB); however, whether the structural pattern of associations among these constructs differs across clinical and non-clinical populations remains unexamined. PURPOSE: This study employed multi-group path analysis within the SEM framework to test whether the structural pathways linki

Medication use and treatment patterns in children and adolescents with chronic tic disorders: an EMTICS study.

The treatment of tic disorders in children and adolescents poses significant challenges, especially when comorbid conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are present. Pharmacological treatments are often guided by clinical judgment, prescriber preferences, and medication availability. This study describes pharmacological treatment use in a large cohort of children and adolescents with chronic tic disorders (CTDs). We analyzed baseline data from the European Multicenter Tics in Children Study (EMTICS) to examine associations bet

The effect of youth-caregiver discrepancies in reports of internalizing and externalizing behavior in forensic clinical decision making about youth involved in the justice system.

Multi-informant assessments are considered the gold standard in the assessment of youth psychopathology. Although best practice dictates that this approach should extend to the assessment of youth involved in the justice system, few studies have examined the effect of multiple informants in a forensic context. Using a sample of 580 youth-caregiver dyads, we conducted a series of polynomial regressions to test whether statistical interactions between scores on the Youth Self-Report and scores on the Child Behavior Checklist (completed by caregivers) predicted psychiatric diagnoses. Psychiatric

Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD): Factor structure and convergent discriminant validity in 14- to 19-year-old middle-to-upper-income adolescents.

The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD; Salekin & Hare, 2016) self-report scale measures psychopathic traits and conduct disorder in children and adolescents. The present study tested the psychometric properties of the PSCD in a sample of middle-to-upper-income adolescents (N = 286, Mage = 15.40; SD = 1.21). Specifically, we tested the factor structure (one-, two-, three-, and four-factor models), convergent and discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity of the PSCD. As expected, we found that a four-factor PSCD model best fit the data. In addition, we found that the PSC

A New Perspective on Clinical Scale Validation: Leveraging Sentence Embeddings for Pre-Validation Semantic Analysis.

Traditional clinical scale development is a lengthy and resource-intensive process, particularly during the empirical validation phase. This paper proposes a paradigm shift by introducing a computational pre-validation framework that leverages sentence embedding models to assess semantic properties of scale items prior to data collection. By transforming items into high-dimensional vector representations and analyzing their relationships within an MTMM-like structure, our method identifies potential item ambiguity, evaluates construct coherence, and tests discriminant validity at an early stag
