Exploring Social Media Use and Anxiety Symptoms in Health Care Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-Sectional Secondary Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) experienced significant mental health challenges, particularly anxiety, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although social media became a primary source of information and connection, it was also a potential source of stress. The influence of social media on HCWs' anxiety is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between social media use and anxiety symptoms among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a secondary, cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2021 UC-COVID study (N=427 HCWs). Anxiety symptoms were ass

Longitudinal associations between loneliness and outcomes of Common Mental Disorders (CMDs): A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has been increasingly associated with poor mental health outcomes, yet its prognostic role in people with Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to examine whether loneliness is longitudinally associated with mental health outcomes in individuals with CMDs, regardless of treatment status. METHODS: We searched PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Embase and CINAHL from inception to October 2025 for longitudinal studies examining associations between baseline loneliness and CMD outcomes at follow-up. Eligible studies included adults aged 16+ with CMDs.

Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome in an Elderly Patient: A Symptomatic Post-stenotic Aneurysm and Systemic Atherothrombotic Disease.

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is atypical in elderly patients, in whom it frequently coexists with severe atherosclerotic disease. We report the case of a 77-year-old male with marked mitral regurgitation who presented with intestinal claudication and malnutrition. CT angiography demonstrated MALS associated with a fusiform aneurysm of the celiac trunk with dissection, along with 60% atherosclerotic stenosis of the superior mesenteric artery. Given the limiting ischemic presentation, the patient underwent laparoscopic release of the ligament. The procedure was complicated by avulsion

Real-time fMRI neurofeedback of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to enhance emotional cognitive control: A randomized controlled trial.

Real-time fMRI neurofeedback (rt-fMRI-nf) is an endogenous neuromodulation approach whereby individuals are taught to self-regulate their own neural activity in the moment. Cognitive control in emotional contexts is related to risk for or protection against mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress disorder. The left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) has been shown to be centrally important in facilitating emotional cognitive control (ECC). Using a double-blind randomized controlled trial design, the present study tested a novel rt-fMRI-nf protocol to i

Age-Friendly Design and Optimization of Digital Health Technologies for Medication Adherence in Older Adults With Chronic Diseases: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Medication nonadherence represents a persistent clinical challenge among older adults with chronic diseases, complicating long-term disease management and prognosis. Digital health technologies (DHTs) deliver promising opportunities for remote, out-of-hospital medication management; nevertheless, age-related cognitive-physiological decline and insufficient digital literacy widen the digital divide, creating barriers to real-world uptake and sustained use of DHTs. Existing systematic reviews mainly synthesize intervention effect sizes, but few unpack multilevel drivers of mixed outc

Quality of Life in Adults With Metastatic Breast Cancer: The Impact of Between- and Within-Person Changes in Symptoms and Positive Affect.

INTRODUCTION: Quality of life (QoL) is important for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). We examined QoL in daily life among patients with MBC using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHODS: From 2023 to 2024, patients with MBC were recruited from 5 Mid-Atlantic sites. Eligible patients were English- or Spanish-speaking, with a life expectancy > 6 months and access to a smartphone. Participants were invited to complete 12 EMAs over 4 weeks. EMAs assessed global QoL, symptom severity (depression, anxiety, pain, fatigue, slowed cognition, appetite loss, nausea, gastrointestinal

SADIE: a longitudinal Survey on Anxiety, Depression, Internalising and Externalising symptoms in Italian university students - a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: University students experience escalating academic, social and financial stress, resulting in high prevalence of anxiety (18%-40%), depression (12-35%) and burnout (20-30%). The COVID-19 pandemic intensified these issues, but most studies report symptom remission post-lockdown, highlighting the need for long-term prospective data on symptom trajectories and risk factors. The Survey on Anxiety, Depression, Internalising and Externalising symptoms (SADIE) study aims to (1) estimate the prevalence and incidence of anxiety, depression, burnout and suicidal ideation in Italian univers

The role of negativity bias and facial affect recognition in the increased odds of first-episode psychosis in ethnic minority populations: Findings from the EU-GEI case-control study.

Repeated exposure to social adversity may contribute to a biased, more negative interpretation of others' facial affect. This mechanism, termed negativity bias, may provide insight into the elevated rates of psychosis among ethnic minority groups. The current study examined whether negativity bias and facial affect recognition represent intermediary pathways linking ethnic minority status, a proxy for differential exposure to social adversity, with first-episode psychosis (FEP). Data were drawn from 1035 individuals with FEP and 1382 population-based controls across five European countries and

Retinal Pigment Epithelium Changes in Pediatric Combined Hamartoma of the Retina and Retinal Pigment Epithelium: Wide-Field Swept-Source OCT Findings.

IMPORTANCE: Although grief-focused cognitive behavior therapies are the most empirically supported treatment for prolonged grief disorder, many people find this treatment difficult. A viable alternative for treatment is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative efficacies of grief-focused cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy to reduce prolonged grief disorder severity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A single-blind, parallel, randomized clinical trial was conducted among adults aged 18 to 70 years with prolonged grief disorder, a

Detecting risk for depression and anxiety symptoms among older bereaved women using text-based analysis in the Nurses' Health Study II.

We analyzed free-text narratives about recent bereavement experiences from 1997 women aged 55-73 years (M = 65.9, SD = 4.4) enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study II to identify associations between text characteristics and postbereavement mental health. We applied covariate-adjusted linear mixed effects models to assess the association between word count and expression of positive vs negative sentiment (emotional valence) in first-person bereavement narratives and standardized Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) total, anxiety, and depression symptom scores over 6 months, stratified by loss

Apathy, effort-based decisions and brain integrity in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Apathy, or loss of motivation, is a prominent syndrome accompanying both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, in addition to other disorders. One approach to understanding motivational loss is to examine the processes underlying goal-directed behaviour. Weighing up rewarding outcomes against the effort costs required to obtain them (effort-based decision-making) is a core computation when deciding to act for outcomes. Although a growing body of evidence points to disruption of this computation in people with apathy, which underlying decision parameters drive this disruption, their neural asso

Longitudinal associations between adolescent body dissatisfaction, eating disorder and depressive symptoms, and BMI: a UK twin cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Body dissatisfaction is associated with later mental health problems and weight gain in young people, but the causality of these associations is unclear. We aimed to investigate the longitudinal associations between body dissatisfaction at age 16 years and later eating disorder and depressive symptoms, and BMI in young adulthood, with rigorous control for potential confounders including shared genetic influences (in objectives 1 and 2). We then quantified the proportion of these associations explained by genetic and environmental factors (objective 3). METHODS: We used data from t

Momentary dynamics of inner speech varieties, auditory verbal hallucinations, and affect in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: an experience sampling study.

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) may arise from misattributed inner speech. However, it is unclear if inner speech frequency and phenomenology differ in schizophrenia-spectrum voice-hearers compared with healthy individuals, and how different inner speech varieties relate to AVH and affect. Using experience sampling methodology (ESM), this study examined the moment-to-moment dynamics between inner speech varieties, AVH, and affect. METHODS: Participants completed 6 days of ESM on an electronic device, responding to 10 daily prompts on

Suicidal ideation and influencing factors among hospitalized older adults with functional impairments: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Compared to their healthy counterparts, hospitalized older adults with functional impairments face a heightened risk of suicidal ideation due to disease-related pain, loss of independence, and reduced social engagement, positioning them as a high-risk demographic for suicide. However, extant research has predominantly focused on generally healthy older populations, leaving a significant gap regarding those with substantial functional limitations. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of suicidal ideation among hospitalized older adults with functiona

Prenatal urinary biomarkers of metal and metalloid exposure and child neurodevelopmental outcomes in Puerto Rico.

Exposure to toxic metals, and insufficient or excess levels of essential metals, particularly during sensitive stages of development, can pose health risks. Previous research reports that prenatal exposure to metal mixtures is associated with poorer cognitive and behavioral outcomes. However, little research has studied the impact of prenatal exposure to complex metal mixtures on child behavioral and emotional development specifically in Puerto Rico, a population with exposure and health disparities. This study aims to understand how prenatal exposure to 14 metals affects child neurodevelopmen
