[Influence of the family situation on the form of expression of neuroses].

In this research were investigated the conditions of the family environment and the contact with the parents in 3 different groups of children and adolescents who presented respectively conversion neurosis, other types of neurosis and behavior disorders of the aggressive type. The analysis of the results obtained indicated a positive correlation between the tendency to manifest emotional conflicts under the form of conversion symptoms and the course of childhood in a family inadequate environment, with the absence of one or both parents. This fact was not found in the two other groups.

The efficacy of relaxation training with children.

This paper reviews studies that have examined the efficacy of relaxation training techniques in the treatment of childhood disorders. Methodological problems encountered in doing research in this area resemble those found in working with an adult population: imprecise definitions of subject populations and use of a variety of dependent variables from one study to another. Findings suggest that relaxation training is at least as effective as other treatment approaches for a variety of learning, behavioral, and physiological disorders when it is continued over an extended period of time and is a

Hallucinations in children with conduct and emotional disorders: II. The follow-up study.

In a controlled study, 20 children with hallucinations and emotional or conduct disorders were followed up into adulthood. The mean follow-up time was 17 years and the mean age at follow-up was 30 years. Hallucinations in childhood did not carry an increased risk for psychoses, depressive illness, organic brain damage or other psychiatric disorders. The continuation of hallucinations and episodes of altered awareness in some of the subjects may indicate a special predisposition to hallucinate.

Extreme deprivation in early childhood--I. Diverse outcomes for three siblings from an extraordinary family.

An unusual family is described which has been studied for several years. Accounts are given of the later development of two sisters who had suffered severe social and emotional deprivation in infancy. One girl appears to have completely recovered. The other remains handicapped, mainly in language skills, and shows a variety of autistic features. She is also microcephalic as is their mother. The development of a half brother who was raised elsewhere is recounted. He is an albino, severely mentally retarded and autistic. The later discrepancies in development of these children are discussed, wit

Relationship between separation anxiety and panic and agoraphobic disorders.

The paper addresses several issues pertinent to the characteristics and treatment of separation anxiety in children and adults. The rationale for separating separation anxiety from other childhood anxiety conditions rests on clinical observations of its relationship to panic disorder and its response to drug treatment. The psychopharmacological treatment of separation anxiety is reviewed, with special emphasis on the use of tricyclic antidepressants. The literature relevant to a possible association between separation anxiety and adult panic disorder is presented. The prevalence of separation

Behavior troubles in nursery school children and their possible relationship to pregnancy or delivery difficulties.

Thirty four children, 3-5 year old, of 3 nursery schools, with emotional inhibition or temper tantrums detected by the nursery staff, were investigated on difficulties in pregnancy or delivery, by specifically asking their mothers. Compared to a matched control group, the mothers of probands reported more anxious pregnancies (.025), more somatic disturbed pregnancies (.005), experienced more foetal hypermotivity (.05), and their deliveries were more anomalous (.005). The vital conditions of their new-borns were affected by more distress (.025). Since there is an increasing amount of literature

[Personality of patients with dermatologic artefacts].

35 female patients with dermatological artefacts being treated in the University Skin Clinic Basel have been investigated by a dermatologist, a psychiatrist, and a psychologist. The testpsychological examination with the Color Pyramid Test and the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration Test yielded a striking uniform picture: The patients showed strong intrapsychic tension, severe depressivity, inhibition of aggression, affective inhibition, low frustration tolerance, weak ego-integration (with tendencies to break outs of impulses) and autoaggressive tendencies. These results point to a depressive and

Cognitive and affective features in childhood psychosis.

This paper has explored the relationship between affect and cognition in normal, borderline, and psychotic child cases. In contrast to the normal child, an orderly unfolding of cognitive structures appears to be absent, or present only in part for the more severely disturbed child population. The aberrant delays presented by these children reveal a structure of cognition in which heterogeneous levels of thought coexist without reorganization into any known structure of totality. We hypothesize that an interactive relationship exists between these cognitive deficits, and the children's failure

Is the temporo-mandibular pain and dysfunction syndrome a disorder of the mind?

It was assumed that patients with temporo-mandibular pain and dysfunction syndrome (TMPDS) would represent a population whose pain resulted from their emotional state. It was anticipated in the light of existing reports in the literature that they would score like patients with anxiety neurosis or other psychiatric illness on the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and the Crown-Crisp Experiential Index (CCEI: a measure of anxiety and other emotional characteristics). It was also anticipated that patients with facial pain associated with lesions would show evidence of similar emotional disturba

Some psychosomatic disorders in Japan in a cultural perspective.

Social scientists point to Japanese Society as having a high level of group cohesiveness that results from the psychodynamic need to mutual dependency in the Japanese personality structure, which is fostered by symbiotic mother-child relationship in childhood. Such a traditional interdependency seems to modify psychsomatic mechanisms in the Japanese inducing the preponderance of the types of reactions related to what is called 'vegetative retreat'. While over-indulgence to the maternal interdependence may threaten the development of an independent person, the severe deprivation of motherly lov

European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. Third European Lecture. Naples, 23 April, 1982. Some aspects of personality of the neurosurgeon.

Possibility of personality shaping: Hippokrates said: "Balance is essential to health, and imbalance creates, or is, disease." Psychological balance is essential for developing our personality and professional ability. However, growth is also dependent on a sound community spirit in the profession. Hindu psychology lists joy, success, duty and understanding as personality-shaping forces which significantly-and positively-affect our actions from childhood until old age. Of these, success and duty are the most relevant during a neurosurgeon's creative period. The majority of our operations are n

Social experiences in childhood and adult psychiatric morbidity: a multiple regression analysis.

The effect of childhood experiences on adult psychiatric morbidity was examined in a community psychiatric survey. The Present State Examination was used to assess psychiatric morbidity. Childhood experiences assessed included childhood demographic factors and 'loss and deprivation' variables. The latter group comprised maternal and paternal deaths and separations and other disruptions in parental care 'Loss and deprivation' in combination accounted for between 4.5 and 5.5% of the variance in adult psychiatric morbidity.

Cognitive and emotional functioning in hypopituitary short-statured children.

Eleven children with documented growth hormone deficiency were studied to assess their cognitive and emotional functioning and their academic achievement before and after 1 year of human growth hormone replacement therapy. Standardized personality and intelligence measures were used, and records of school achievement, as well as developmental and family history from parents, were obtained. Although some subjects in this group were coping with problems other than their short stature (e.g., other medical and psychosocial problems), their intelligence and academic achievement were found to be pos

Analysability in relation to early psychopathology.

Analysability is a highly important subject, both in the treatment of patients and in selecting candidates for analytical training. The assessment of analysability can be studied from two complementary points of view: the dynamic (with the data obtained in the preliminary interviews) and the genetic (with data obtained from early childhood by means of psychoanalytical treatment). The purpose of this study will be to contribute to the study of analysability from the genetic point of view. When one goes deeper into the analysis of a patient there may be doubts as to the limits and possibilities

Child health in Singapore--past, present and future.

The state of child health in Singapore from 1914 to the present is chronicled. In 1914, there were 225 reported cases of tetanus neonatorum out of 7,420 births and 340 deaths from gastroenteritis with an infant mortality rate (IMR) of 292.9 per 1000 livebirths. In 1936 the infant mortality rate was 167.74, and in 1962, it was still high at 31.2, a figure which exceeded the IMR of USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand. However, by 1976, the IMR had fallen to 11.8 which was lower than that of the above countries and the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) was 8.4 which was also lower than the other four

Epilepsy in the adolescence.

The impact of recurrent seizures during childhood has a different influence upon the brain condition and mental activity of young epileptics at certain ages. Epilepsy has specific clinical features and characteristic EEG abnormalities, which occur at the developmental stage. Adolescence causes more extra burden to epileptic patients, particularly in the development of mental and/or emotional levels. In this paper, the authors report on two types of age-related phenomena--one benign in nature, and the other malignant. That is, RD (= rolandic discharge) is shown as a benign EEG feature with whic

Identification of features associated with flying phobia in aircrew.

The psychological and physiological features of 20 aircrew consecutively referred for treatment of anxiety symptoms when flying were compared with a matched control group of uncomplaining aircrew. There were no significant differences between the two groups on psychometric tests of personality, though there were differences in skin conductance; the phobics had a higher rate of spontaneous fluctuation, and habituated less to a repeated auditory tone. More of the phobic group worried about their wives and acknowledged childhood and other adulthood phobias; more had a family history of an episode

Aggression against cats, dogs and people.

In order to investigate the nature of animal cruelty in childhood two groups of male psychiatric patients were compared: an Animal Cruelty Group and an Assaultive Group. Most in both groups showed other signs of aggression dyscontrol in childhood. Most in both groups were subjected to parental brutality. Emotional or physical unavailability of a father figure may be a common etiologic factor in childhood cruelty to animals. This may compare with the absence of a father figure noted by several investigators in boys who set fires.

The oppositional personality in childhood.

The charts of thirty children having been diagnosed at Washington University Child Guidance Clinic as having oppositional personalities are reviewed and their commonalities are noted. The literature on this syndrome is reviewed and the dynamics discussed. Delineation of this syndrome from other syndromes is considered. The issue of control for autonomy seems to be central in these children who resist authority, but have superego development.
