Genetic and neuroanatomical correlates of bipolar disorder in high-risk youth.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BD) often begins in adolescence, a period marked by dynamic neurodevelopment. However, the neurobiological basis from genetic risk and subthreshold symptoms to diagnosed BD remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the Recognition and Early Intervention of Prodromal Bipolar Disorders cohort (NCT01863628), including 392 participants aged 12-25 years with a balanced sexual distribution, stratified into five groups: offspring of patients with BD with (OBDs, n=48) or without (OBDns, n=62) subthreshold symptoms, individuals with

Reducing social disparities in child emotional and behavioral problems by hypothetical physical activity and screen time interventions.

PURPOSE: To estimate how social disparities in child psychiatric symptoms might change following hypothetical interventions targeting sports, outdoor play, and screen time at age 10. METHODS: We used data from 9,778 children of the Generation R Study, a prospective population-based cohort in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Social inequality variables included sex, maternal education, and migration background. Primary caregivers filled out the validated Child Behavior Checklist to report on children's internalizing and externalizing symptoms at the age of 13. The hypothetical interventions (i.e.,

Trauma and hallucinations across the sensory modalities: the importance of considering experiences in childhood and adulthood.

It is widely acknowledged that trauma is related to auditory hallucinations in psychotic disorders. Yet, this relationship has not been well explored in hallucinations across other sensory modalities. The current study investigated whether hallucination modality groups (auditory, visual, olfactory, tactile, multisensory) were significantly related to physical, sexual, or emotional trauma. The age at which the trauma was experienced (16 or below, 17 and above) was also considered. Multivariate linear models, analysis of variance, and regression analyses for sixty-six participants with a psychot

The Development of Trait Anxiety in Nonhuman Primates During the First Year of Life.

Anxious temperament (AT) is a nonhuman primate phenotype that models childhood behavioral inhibition, a prominent risk factor for anxiety disorders and stress-related psychopathology. To understand its earliest antecedents, we characterized AT's developmental trajectory over the first year of life. Infant monkeys (n = 35, 24 females) were longitudinally phenotyped for AT by assessing threat-related increases in freezing behavior, reductions in coo-calling, and increases in circulating cortisol at 1.5, 6, 12, 24, and 52 weeks. AT levels increased linearly, reaching mature levels by 52 weeks. In

Fronto-cerebellar features associate with cognitive dysfunction in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive dysfunction (CD) is a prevalent symptom in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE). This study aimed to investigate the neurobehavioral basis of CD in cSLE. METHODS: Patients with cSLE (N=20) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs, N=20) completed questionnaires and multiple neurocognitive tests. The Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 and laboratory markers were used to monitor patients' clinical status. Neuroimaging assessments included functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a

Prospective Pathways Among Rumination, Depression, and Insomnia in Youth.

A growing body of research suggests sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms do not just co-occur but influence each other over time. While emerging evidence supports a bidirectional relationship, developmental pathways between sleep problems and depression remain understudied in youth. Rumination may serve as a potential modifiable cognitive mechanism linking these conditions. However, rumination's role in these developmental pathways remains largely unexplored, particularly across childhood and adolescence. This study employed a cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) to investigate prospective as

A correlational study of adult picky eating: proposing a developmental model.

BACKGROUND: Adult picky eating (PE) is quite common, and when extreme, is associated with emotional, social, and physical distress and damage. In this correlational study we examined retrospectively childhood PE, parental accommodation of childhood PE, sensory over-responsiveness, and current symptoms of anxiety and depression, to test their combined contribution to adult picky eating. METHODS: Participants were 352 adult community volunteers, predominantly female (79.5%), aged 18-71 years, with some college education (mean 14.4 years). They self-reported online on current picky eating, retro

Examining the Effect of Peer-Led Parenting Interventions on the Wellbeing of Parents With Children With an Emotional or Behavioural Disorder - A Systematic Review.

BackgroundParents of children with emotional or behavioural disorders (EBD) experience challenges with their own wellbeing. Parenting practices are impacted by parent wellbeing and are vital to supporting children with EBD. Programs with peer-led components, aimed at developing healthy parenting skills have been developed. While peer-led parenting interventions for parents of children with EBD have led to positive outcomes for children, outcomes related to parent wellbeing are not known. This systematic review examines the impact of peer-led parenting programs on the wellbeing of parents of ch

Understanding the developmental impact of psychological maltreatment through the lens of the dimensional model of adversity and psychopathology.

Background: Psychological maltreatment is linked to negative developmental outcomes in adolescents. It includes psychological abuse (PA) and psychological neglect (PN), which are commonly studied as a pair. This study applied the dimensional model of adversity and psychopathology (DMAP), which conceptualises abuse as a threatening experience involving harm or the threat of harm that primarily impairs social-emotional processing, such as emotion regulation, while it views neglect as deprivation or absence of parental care that predominantly affects cognitive functioning, such as working memory.

Blood Lead Concentrations and Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms in Childhood.

IMPORTANCE: Low-level lead exposure during early brain development is associated with lower cognitive abilities and externalizing behavioral problems in children. However, the association of lead exposure with depression and anxiety remains understudied, particularly in later childhood, when these symptoms often manifest. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between low-level, serial blood lead concentrations in children and symptoms of depression and anxiety and to investigate for periods of susceptibility. Neural and Psychophysiological Correlates of Cognitive, Social, and Emotional Development of Infants and Children of Mothers With Peripartum Depression: A Systematic Review.

If left untreated, peripartum depression (PPD) can significantly disrupt mother-infant interactions and is associated with long-term negative consequences for child development. The aim of this article was to systematically review studies examining the underlying neural and physiological markers associated with socioemotional and cognitive development in infants and children exposed to maternal PPD. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane databases, covering studies from their inception until July 2024. Six studies were inclu

Early Predictors of the Childhood Dysregulation Profile: A Systematic Review.

Childhood dysregulation profile (DP) involves difficulties in regulating emotions, behaviour and cognitions, and is associated with adverse long-term outcomes, yet its early life predictors are less well understood. This systematic review examined peer-reviewed studies published in English up to December 2024, identifying 12 eligible articles. Findings revealed that family-related factors such as parental mental health symptoms, lower education, prenatal substance use, and higher social adversity were associated with increased childhood DP symptoms, whereas evidence on parenting behaviours and

Age-related moderation of adjunctive psychotherapy and early life stress effects on depression symptom reductions following ketamine treatment: Initial insights from a large, naturalistic sample.

Ketamine is known to be a rapid-acting antidepressant, but there is limited evidence regarding which types of patients are best-suited to this treatment and whether adjunctive psychotherapy improves outcomes. In a sample of 224 patients who received five ketamine infusions at a private clinic, this study uses Bayesian mixed modeling to examine the effects of early life stress (measured with the Adverse Childhood Experiences [ACE] survey) and treatment modality (ketamine-assisted therapy [KAT] vs. infusions only) on antidepressant response, and whether these effects interact. Depression symptom

Beyond mental disorders: The role of child maltreatment in childhood suicidal behaviour.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in children aged 14 years and under in Australia, and child maltreatment is consistently identified as an antecedent. Despite this, not enough is known about the pathways from child maltreatment to suicidal behaviour, hampering prevention efforts. In this perspective, we examine the association between (1) various types of childhood maltreatment, and (2) the presence of mental disorders, and subsequent suicidal behaviours in children aged 14 years and under. We present a conceptual model of childhood suicidal behaviours which incorporates both dire

Embedding public and patient involvement in childhood stuttering research: lessons learned from engaging children and families in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) is increasingly recognised as essential for ensuring health research is relevant, inclusive, and responsive to local contexts. However, in many regions of the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, PPI remains underdeveloped. This commentary presents a reflective account of how PPI was embedded throughout a multi-method doctoral study exploring the experiences of Saudi children who stutter (CWS). MAIN BODY: This paper describes how ten Arabic-speaking contributors, including three children (aged 8 to10 years), two parents, two teachers, and three

A null findings study: graph theoretical analysis of the fetal functional connectome shows no relationships with future autistic traits.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition, with ex vivo studies suggesting its neurobiological origin as early as the first and second trimester of pregnancy. Functional MRI studies using graph-theoretical approaches have isolated features in the global connectome architecture that distinguish toddlers with ASD from their typically developing peers. Additionally, functional connectivity patterns in the infant brain have shown to be predictive of later ASD diagnosis. An important yet unexplored question in the literature is whether graph-theoretical differences are eviden
