A Public Health Scourge: The Recent Surge of an Ancient Disease.

The recent resurgence of congenital syphilis is striking, with an increase in cases 10-fold over the past 12 years, including a 30% rise within the past 3 years alone. The consequences of untreated maternal syphilis can be severe, contributing to significant fetal and neonatal illness and death in cases of congenital syphilis. We present a case involving a male fetus delivered stillborn at 33 weeks' gestation to a 30-year-old woman with limited prenatal care. The mother had been diagnosed with late latent syphilis 8 days before delivery and had a history of polysubstance use. Ultrasound at 32

Maternal Syphilis of Unknown Duration: Birth Outcomes in an Immediate Test-and-Treat Cohort often Receiving Fewer than Three Doses of Benzathine Penicillin G.

In a South African antenatal cohort, an immediate test-and-treat model for syphilis of unknown duration showed that adverse birth outcomes-including stillbirth and preterm birth-were similar between women without syphilis and those treated with penicillin, regardless of completion of the three-dose regimen. Further studies are needed to evaluate optimal treatment strategies in pregnancy.

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of gestational and congenital syphilis in Hungary: A cross-sectional, single-center case analysis.

BackgroundIn recent years, gestational and congenital syphilis have re-emerged as significant public health concerns in Hungary. Although national surveillance data are available for syphilis, they do not include gestational cases, and recent studies describing the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of gestational and congenital syphilis remain limited. The aim of the study was to analyze 10 years of data to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of gestational and congenital syphilis and to identify gaps in prenatal screening and care.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectiona

Spatial Distribution and Epidemiological Characterization of Congenital Syphilis in Monterrey, Mexico, 2016-2024.

Congenital syphilis is a preventable infectious disease that is rising in low- and middle-income countries. The CDC classifies congenital syphilis into four clinical scenarios to guide diagnosis and treatment: Scenario 1, proven or highly probable congenital syphilis; Scenario 2, possible congenital syphilis; Scenario 3, less likely congenital syphilis; and Scenario 4, unlikely congenital syphilis. Geolocation is crucial for analyzing the distribution of infectious diseases by pinpointing high-prevalence areas and enabling targeted interventions. This retrospective observational study analyzed

A case report of congenital pemphigus syphiliticus in a preterm neonate: Insights into diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up in a resource-limited country (Cambodia).

Congenital syphilis remains a preventable cause of neonatal morbidity, often resulting from undiagnosed or untreated maternal infection. We report a case of a late-preterm infant born to a mother with late latent syphilis underdiagnosed during pregnancy. Vertical transmission occurred transplacentally, given that the neonate presented with respiratory distress and pathognomonic signs such as pemphigus on both feet at birth. Laboratory evaluation confirmed syphilis infection, with high titer of RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) and TPHA (Treponema Pallidum Hemagglutination Assay) and markedly elevated

[Translated article] AEDV Expert Consensus for the Management of Syphilis.

Syphilis -the "great simulator" for classical venereologists-is re-emerging in Western countries despite adequate treatment; several contributing factors have been identified, including changes in sexual behaviour, which won't be the topic of this article though. In 2021, a total of 6613 new cases of syphilis were reported in Spain, representing an incidence of 13.9×100 000 inhabitants (90.5%, men). Rates have increased progressively since 2000. The clinical presentation of syphilis is heterogeneous. Although chancroid, syphilitic roseola and syphilitic nails are typical lesions, other forms o

[Late congenital syphilis: case report].

Syphilis shows marked increase in its prevalence in Argentina and the world. The World Health Organization estimates that annually there are 12 million people infected in the world, 270,000 corresponding to newborns with congenital syphilis. We describe an 8-year-old girl who was undergoing mononucleosis due to Epstein-Barr virus and presented syphilis as a diagnostic finding, confirmed by two different positive treponemal tests, assuming a compatible picture of late latent congenital asymptomatic syphilis.

Case report of eight pregnant women with syphilis.

Congenital syphilis may lead to severe sequelae in affected infants. The prevalence of syphilis in women of childbearing age has increased worldwide. From 2015 to 2018, we encountered eight pregnant women with syphilis including six with late latent and two with early latent syphilis. Seven pregnant women with syphilis received antibiotic therapies of oral amoxicillin, intravenous penicillin G, or the both. The syphilotherapies in four cases were considered effective, because rapid plasma reagin titers decreased. None of the seven pregnant women who received syphilotherapies had congenital syp

[Syphilis epidemiological report. Chile, 2016].

Syphilis is produced by Treponema pallidum, which is acquired mainly through sexual contact and transplacental, but can also be acquired by transfusion of contaminated human blood and direct accidental inoculation. The natural history of the infection is characterized by three symptomatic clinical stages: primary, secondary and tertiary syphilis; these last two are preceded by asymptomatic or latent stages of the disease: early latent syphilis and late latent syphilis. This report presents the epidemiological situation of syphilis in Chile up to 2016, using as a method the descriptive analysis
