The current clinical approach to feeding and eating disorders aimed to increase personalization of management.

Feeding and eating disorders (FEDs) are a heterogeneous grouping of disorders at the mind-body interface, with typical onset from childhood into emerging adulthood. They occur along a spectrum of disordered eating and compensatory weight management behaviors, and from low to high body weight. Psychiatric comorbidities are the norm. In contrast to other major psychiatric disorders, first-line treatments for FEDs are mainly psychological and/or nutrition-focused, with medications playing a minor adjunctive role. Patients, carers and clinicians all have identified personalization of treatment as

Prenatal maternal stress: triangulating evidence for intrauterine exposure effects on birth and early childhood outcomes across multiple approaches.

BACKGROUND: Maternal stress during pregnancy may impact offspring development via changes in the intrauterine environment. However, genetic and environmental factors shared between mothers and children might skew our understanding of this pathway. This study assesses whether prenatal maternal stress has causal links to offspring outcomes: birthweight, gestational age, or emotional and behavioral difficulties, triangulating across methods that account for various measured and unmeasured confounders. METHODS: We used data from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), includi

Preliminary Results of Sensorimotor Room Training for the Improvement of Sensory and Motor Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Background: Motor skills in early and middle childhood are essential for physical play, social interactions, and academic development. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit atypical sensory responses, which can impact self-care and other developmental areas. This study explores the impact of sensory and motor rehabilitation using a Motor Sensory Room to stimulate motor development in children with ASD. Methods: Twenty-five children with ASD, preschool and school-aged (2-10 years), were divided into three groups based on the DSM-5 severity levels. The PEP-3 scale was used t

A Qualitative Analysis of Unintentional Injuries in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

PURPOSE: Prior research demonstrates that children with autism are more likely to experience unintentional injuries than the general population. Limited research exists on the symptoms or traits directly related to autism and this elevated injury rate, especially from the perspective of families with children with autism. This study used qualitative methodology to elucidate risk factors that may contribute to unintentional injuries in children with autism from the perspective of mothers raising children with autism. METHODS: Participants included 15 mothers reporting on their children with au

Changes to social and healthcare providers support in the perinatal period: Impact on coping strategies, depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: During the perinatal period, risk of depression and anxiety (D&A) increases. As in other crisis events, the COVID-19 pandemic, imposed social distancing measures, diminished social support and changes in perinatal healthcare provision which heightened this risk. This study aimed to examine how changes in social and healthcare provider support during the pandemic affected coping strategies and depression and anxiety symptoms (D&As) among perinatal women. METHODS: A cross-sectional international study included 7,368 pregnant and postpartum women up to six months postpartum from 12 c

What are the levels and interactions of neuroligin-1, neuroligin-3, and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8) in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in social interaction, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. Several genes, including synaptic proteins and environmental risk factors, play a role in the etiology of autism. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between neuroligin-1 (NLGN-1) and neuroligin-3 (NLGN-3) levels, which are neuronal cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), and inflammatory cytokine (IL-6, IL-8) levels with disease severity and symptom clusters and with each other in children with ASD. Eighty children diagnosed with autism who met the inclusion criteria an

Psychosocial factors associated with the trajectories of interparental conflict for Australian fathers of autistic children: A longitudinal study across 10 years of child development.

Limited research exists on fathers' experiences of interparental conflict (IPC) in families with autistic children. We aimed to identify: (1) the extent to which these fathers report IPC across 10 years of child development (4-14 years) and how this compares to fathers of non-autistic children; (2) distinct trajectories of IPC for fathers of autistic children and (3) factors associated with trajectories of IPC among fathers of autistic children. This is a retrospective study using a national dataset. Participants were 281 fathers of autistic children and 7046 fathers of non-autistic children.

Chronic Social Defeat Stress in Early Adolescent Male Mice.

Physical abuse and trauma in childhood is reported in as many as 1 in 7 children and is a major risk factor for the development of psychiatric diseases, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), in adolescence and adulthood. Hallmark behavioral symptoms of PTSD include avoidance of cues and contexts associated with trauma. The ability to model long-lasting changes in the brain due to early life trauma is critical to determine potential circuit and molecular targets for the modulation of resultant symptoms. This manuscript describes a protocol for modeling early life physical and psycholog

Are Neurocognitive Deficits Associated With Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Children due to COVID-19?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Children with gastrointestinal symptoms due to COVID-19 may experience neurocognitive deficits. Symptoms include difficulty in concentration, memory and other cognitive functions. The deficits could be caused by the virus itself or due to the physical and psychological stress of the pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we examined 65 children, 32 children with gastrointestinal symptoms, and we compared them to 33 children without gastrointestinal symptoms due to COVID-19, to investigate whether gastrointestinal symptoms affected neurocognitive status in c

Family functioning in families with 11-year-old children at familial high risk of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and population-based controls: The Danish High Risk and Resilience Study VIA 11.

BACKGROUND: Poorer family functioning during childhood is associated with severe mental disorders in adulthood in the general population. However, family functioning is understudied in families with parental schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. We aimed to investigate family functioning in families with 11-year-old children of parents with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder compared with controls. Second, we aimed to examine associations between family functioning and levels of child psychopathology, child global functioning, and parental social functioning. METHODS: In this prospective, populat

Evaluating the Pattern of Relationships of Speech and Language Deficits with Executive Functions, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Facets of Giftedness in Greek Preschool Children. A Preliminary Analysis.

Speech and language deficits often occur in preschool children, and empirical studies have indicated an association between language impairments and challenges in different cognitive domains. The primary aim of the current study was to evaluate the associations between speech and language deficits, executive function (EF) impairments, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and aspects of giftedness in Greek preschoolers based on assessments from their teachers. Investigating the associations between aspects of EFs, ADHD, and giftedness was another objective of the current study. Fina

Activation of KCC2 during development alleviates cognitive, behavioral, and neural excitability in adult CDKL5-deficient mice.

Cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (CDKL5) deficiency disorder (CDD) is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) characterized by severe drug-resistant epileptic disorders beginning in early childhood, along with cognitive and social impairments in later childhood and adulthood. Existing pharmacological therapies for CDD primarily focus on anti-seizure medications, which often have associated sedative side effects. In addition, there are currently no effective treatments for cognitive or behavioral impairments associated with this disorder. Postnatal development expression of CDKL5 has a

Trajectories of autism symptom severity for boys and girls across childhood.

Girls, more than boys, experience a decrease in the severity of autism symptoms during childhood. It is unclear, however, which specific autistic behaviors change more for girls than for boys. Trajectories of autism symptoms were evaluated using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-calibrated severity scores (ADOS-CSS). Change in the specific behavioral characteristics of autism was assessed by studying individual ADOS items for 183 children (55 girls) from age 3-to-11 years. Girls decreased in total autism symptom severity (ADOS-CSS) and restricted/repetitive behavior severity (RRB-CSS)

The role of childhood social fragmentation and perceived discrimination on maladaptive core schemas later in life among young adults at clinical high risk for psychosis and healthy comparisons.

OBJECTIVE: Neighborhood social fragmentation during childhood has been linked to the future onset of psychosis and poorer social functioning. Maladaptive core schemas may partly explain this relationship. This study examines whether childhood exposure to area-level social fragmentation is associated with maladaptive core schemas in adulthood and whether perceived discrimination mediates this relationship. METHODS: Baseline data were collected from the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study 2 (2009-2013). Participants included adults at clinical high-risk for psychosis (N = 84) and healthy

Efficacy and Safety of Cannabinoids for Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Updated Systematic Review.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) lacks an established pharmacological treatment protocol, prompting interest in alternative therapeutic approaches, such as cannabidiol (CBD). This systematic review evaluates the potential efficacy and safety of CBD-rich formulations in managing ASD symptoms. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library identified seven studies encompassing 494 patients from Brazil and Israel. Preliminary findings suggest that CBD-rich formulations may provide modest benefits for sleep and social interaction, with a reduction in anxie

Social-Emotional Functioning and Quality of Life in Language Disorders: A Systematic Review of Development From Childhood to Adolescence.

BACKGROUND: It is well-established that children and adolescents with developmental language disorder (DLD) have social-emotional difficulties. This is reflected in their behaviour, for instance, by (social) withdrawal, hyperactivity or difficulty with peer relations. Children with DLD are also known to have poorer quality of life (QoL). This is likely to be related to social-emotional difficulties, for both concern similar developmental domains but from a different point of view. Findings on the social-emotional abilities, QoL and predictors thereof in children with DLD are inconsistent acros
