A case study of the use of a structured teaching approach in adults with autism in a residential home in Greece.

In November 2001, the Greek Society for the Protection of Autistic People (GSPAP) established the first residence for people with autism in Greece, following the guidelines of structured teaching and the TEACCH method with all 12 of the residents. Using interview questionnaires and systematic naturalistic observations, this case study explored the effectiveness of the training programme in the residence for the 12 adolescents and adults with autism, who had never received any other intervention or training. The instruments used for the evaluation were the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, the Vin

How gene-stress-behavior interactions can promote adolescent alcohol use: the roles of predrinking allostatic load and childhood behavior disorders.

A variety of environmental and genetic factors modulating the risk for alcoholism have been described, which predominantly act by interacting with each other. For example, the family, peers and society determine the level of exposure to stress and alcohol, while genes modulate how sensitive an individual responds to both. The resulting behaviors feed back to the social environment, modulating and in the worst case increasing further stress exposure. We here review neurobiological evidence how such a process of mutual interaction can involve and affect drinking. In at-risk adolescents it may ha

Seven institutionalized children and their adaptation in late adulthood: the children of Duplessis (Les Enfants de Duplessis).

War, societal and familial upheaval, disease, and natural disasters have resulted in orphaned children throughout time. One societal response to providing care for orphans has been institutionalization or the orphanage. We studied a sample of adults, known as les enfants de Duplessis or Duplessis's children, who were raised in Quebec institutions from birth onward and followed up in late adulthood. Systematic study indicated a high prevalence of adverse outcomes and found high levels of gross psychological trauma and adversity which, moderated by the childhood strengths of the individuals, had

Classification matters for catatonia and autism in children.

Despite its chequered history, Kahlbaum's 1874 description of catatonia (tension insanity) and its categorization as a clinical illness is in outline still valid. Kahlbaum also acknowledged the existence of catatonia in children. Corresponding case studies have also been analyzed. The originators and disciples of the Wernicke-Kleist-Leonhard school proved catatonia in early childhood as a discrete entity with specific psychopathology. This does not mean that catatonic symptoms do not occur in other illnesses and in particular in organic psychoses. These are, however, of a totally different nat

Suicide and deliberate self-harm in personality disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews literature published over the period January 2004-May 2005 on suicidal behaviour and self-harm in personality disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have confirmed that personality disorders and their co-morbidity with other psychiatric conditions are risk factors for both fatal and nonfatal suicidal behaviours, and self-mutilation. Negative life events, childhood sexual abuse, difficulties in social functioning, deficits in future-directed thinking and time perception, as well as familial and neurocognitive factors may be related to increased suicide risk

Quality of life and childhood atopic dermatitis: the misery of living with childhood eczema.

The misery of living with atopic eczema (syn. dermatitis, AD) cannot be overstated for it may have a profoundly negative effect on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children and their family unit in many cases. As it is one of the commonest chronic relapsing childhood dermatosis (UK lifetime prevalence 16-20% by 20 years), with increasing worldwide prevalence, this has major social and financial implications for individuals, healthcare providers and society as a whole. This review explores the impact of AD on the lives of children and their family units and the use of some of the r

Neuregulin 1 (8p12) and childhood-onset schizophrenia: susceptibility haplotypes for diagnosis and brain developmental trajectories.

Childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS), defined as onset of psychosis by the age of 12, is a rare and malignant form of the illness, which may have more salient genetic influence. Since the initial report of association between neuregulin 1 (NRG1) and schizophrenia in 2002, numerous independent replications have been reported. In the current study, we genotyped 56 markers (54 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and two microsatellites) spanning the NRG1 locus on 78 COS patients and their parents. We used family-based association analysis for both diagnostic (extended transmission disequilibriu

The impact of childhood chronic neurological diseases on Greek families.

BACKGROUND: Although the impact of childhood chronic neurological diseases (CND) on patients' psychological well-being has been increasingly addressed, little attention has been given to the influence of these conditions on family members and family functioning. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the family characteristics of Greek children suffering from CND. METHODS: A total of 52 parents of children with CND were studied by using the Family Environmental Scale (FES), the Family Burden Scale, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) and a questionnaire on the knowledge of

Comorbid PTSD and social phobia in a treatment-seeking population: an exploratory study.

The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of comorbidity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social phobia (SP) and explore factors associated with the etiology and effect of this comorbidity. The sample consisted of 443 patients seeking treatment of PTSD, SP, or both. Of 240 patients with principal PTSD, 43% had comorbid SP, whereas only 7% of 57 with principal SP had comorbid PTSD. Patients with principal PTSD and comorbid SP were more likely to meet criteria for major depression and other anxiety disorders, and reported worse depression, anxiety, and physical, mental, and so

Differential patterns of premorbid academic and social deterioration in patients with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by a number of behavioral abnormalities that are present prior to onset. These premorbid abnormalities may serve as unique markers for the disorder. The current study examines academic and social functioning prior to schizophrenia onset in a group of 58 males diagnosed with schizophrenia. The pattern of deterioration for social and academic functioning was examined across three age periods including childhood, early adolescence, and late adolescence, using the retrospective Premorbid Adjustment Scale (PAS). Results indicated

[Descriptive study of psychotropic use in the 20-35 age adults with autism in Languedoc-Roussillon].

The Pervasive Developmental Disorders complications can lead to an important life long handicap. There is an important literature about autism, but in most cases, specifically concerning children and adolescents problems. We wished to focus our attention on adults, in order to describe, on one hand their socio-adaptive profile, and on the other hand, the necessity to resort to a psycho-active treatment. The geographic zone chosen in order to carry out this, was Languedoc-Roussillon, and the applied method was a descriptive study of psychotropic use in the 20-35 age adults with autism. The inst

Normal male childhood and adolescent sexual interactions: implications for sexual orientation of the individual with intersex.

Data provided by 24 adult men, 20 heterosexual and four homosexual, concerning parental, religious, geographic and explicit sexual innuendos, comments and childhood experiences are presented and discussed in an attempt to consider some of the multiple factors impacting the development of sexual orientation. All of the study subjects were normally developed males and were presumed to have been exposed to normal male levels of androgens prenatally. Since the experiences and perceptions reported are conditioned by a unique social environment that has been superimposed on a normal male typical pre

Childhood sexual assault victims: long-term outcomes after testifying in criminal court.

We report a longitudinal study of long-term outcomes of participating in criminal cases following child sexual abuse (CSA). In the 1980s, 218 child victim/witnesses took part in a study of short-term sequelae of legal involvement. Approximately 12 years later, 174 of them, as well as a comparison group of 41 matched individuals with no CSA history, were interviewed about their mental health and legal attitudes. Being young when the legal case started was associated with poorer later adjustment. Additionally, even when controlling for psychological problems at the start of the legal case and ot

Psychological impact of types of sexual trauma among college women.

Studies typically demonstrate that sexual victimization is associated with negative outcomes, yet they often fail to control for other trauma exposure and rarely address the impact of developmental level at the time of exposure or the type of sexual trauma experienced. The present study addresses these confounds by identifying groups of women with unique, nonoverlapping sexual trauma histories and examines the association between type of sexual trauma exposure and mental health impairment, social adjustment, and sexual functioning. This study compared five discrete groups of college-sophomore
