Generalized anxiety disorder in children and adolescents.

Children and adolescents with GAD suffer from excessive, pervasive worries that interfere with social, academic, and family functioning. The comorbidity rate with other anxiety disorders and major depression is high. The course tends to be chronic, and evidence shows continuity between anxiety disorders in youth and adulthood. Individual and group CBT and the incorporation of family anxiety management training have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of childhood GAD. No double-blind, placebo-controlled, pharmacotherapy trials with adequate sample sizes for children and adolescents with GAD

Relationships of borderline features to parental mental illness, childhood abuse, Axis I disorder, and current functioning.

Although a number of studies have investigated single, putative etiological factors for borderline personality disorder (BPD), few studies have assessed the relations between multiple etiological factors and borderline features within the same study. Borderline features, parental psychopathology, childhood physical and sexual abuse, lifetime Axis I disorder, and current functioning were assessed in 65 nonclinical participants, a portion of which exhibited significant BPD features. Multivariate models were tested and results indicated that parental mental illness and lifetime Axis I disorder we

Social anxiety disorder in childhood and adolescence: current status and future directions.

This paper reviews the current status of research on the phenomenology, etiology, maintenance, assessment, and treatment of childhood and adolescent social anxiety disorder (SAD). Despite being one of the most prevalent disorders of childhood and adolescence, SAD paradoxically stands as one of the least recognized, researched, and treated pediatric disorders. The small treatment outcome literature provides preliminary support to the effectiveness of various forms of cognitive behavior therapy. The majority of studies to date, however, are limited by inadequate control conditions. Other finding

Conceptualizing child sexual abuse in interpersonal context: recovery of people, not memories.

The controversy regarding delayed recall of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has deflected> attention from the question of whether memory recovery and other trauma-focused treatment approaches are effective for abuse survivors. More than a decade of clinical experience has convinced many experts that as a primary treatment strategy, this approach often leads to decompensation among CSA survivors. However, few treatment alternatives have been clearly articulated. One such alternative, contextual therapy, is grounded in evidence that many CSA survivors grow up in an interpersonal context that fails

Comorbidity, neurobiology, and pharmacotherapy of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder is a common psychiatric illness that imposes persistent functional impairment and disability on persons who have the disorder. The disorder is characterized by a marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment may occur. It is the most prevalent of any anxiety disorder and is the third most common psychiatric disorder after depression and alcohol abuse. Social anxiety disorder typically begins during childhood with a mean age at onset between 14 and 16 years and is sometimes preceded by a history of social inhibition or shyness. Per

The Danish National Birth Cohort--its background, structure and aim.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that the time from conception to early childhood has importance for health conditions that reach into later stages of life. Recent research supports this view, and diseases such as cardiovascular morbidity, cancer, mental illnesses, asthma, and allergy may all have component causes that act early in life. Exposures in this period, which influence fetal growth, cell divisions, and organ functioning, may have long-lasting impact on health and disease susceptibility. METHODS: To investigate these issues the Danish National Birth Cohort (Better health for mother and c

The tripeptide feG reduces endotoxin-provoked perturbation of intestinal motility and inflammation.

ABSTRACT: Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of disease burden globally with far-reaching consequences including enormous socio-economic burden to healthcare and society at large. Cardiovascular health is decisive for reproductive function, healthy pregnancy and postpartum. During pregnancy, maternal cardiovascular system is exposed to highly increased haemodynamic stress that significantly impacts health status of the mother and offspring. Resulting from sub-optimal maternal health conditions overlooked in pre-pregnancy time, progressive abnormalities can be expected during preg

Fear: the impact and treatment of social phobia.

Social phobia is the most common anxiety disorder in the community with a prevalence rate in the range of 5-8%. The problem most often emerges in childhood or adolescence. Individuals with generalized social phobia are at risk of developing other psychiatric disorders such as major depression, alcohol abuse and other anxiety disorders. Sufferers of social phobia often do not seek treatment until they encounter difficulty with comorbid disorders. Recent research indicates that social anxiety disorder is associated with higher levels of disability and greater reductions in quality of life than p

Support for linkage of autism and specific language impairment to 7q3 from two chromosome rearrangements involving band 7q31.

Childhood autism is characterised by impairments in communication and reciprocal social interaction together with restricted/stereotyped interests, which are evident before 3 years of age. Specific developmental disorders of speech and language (SDDSL) are characterised by impairment in the development of expressive and/or receptive language skills which is not associated with intellectual, sensory, physical, or neurological impairment. Family and twin studies indicate a substantial genetic component in the aetiology of both disorders. They also reveal increased rates of SDDSL in relatives of

Disability and quality of life in pure and comorbid social phobia. Findings from a controlled study.

Social phobia is increasingly recognized as a prevalent and socially impairing mental disorder. However, little data is available regarding the general and disease-specific impairments and disabilities associated with social phobia. Furthermore, most studies have not controlled for the confounding effects of comorbid conditions. This study investigates: (a) the generic quality of life; (b) work productivity; and, (c) various other disorder-specific social impairments in current cases with pure (n = 65), comorbid (n = 51) and subthreshold (n = 34) DSM-IV social phobia as compared to controls wi

Autism and developmental receptive language disorder--a follow-up comparison in early adult life. II: Social, behavioural, and psychiatric outcomes.

This paper focuses on general social functioning in two groups of young men, one with autism and one with developmental receptive language disorders, who were first assessed at the ages of 7-8 years. At that time, although matched for nonverbal IQ (mean 92-93) and expressive language, the Language group showed significantly fewer social and behavioural problems. At follow-up, when aged on average, 23 to 24 years, the Autism group continued to show significantly more impairments in terms of stereotyped behaviour patterns, social relationships, jobs, and independence. However, problems in all th

Stress, coping, and adjustment in children with a chronic disease: a review of the literature.

PURPOSE: To review the literature on the consequences of having a chronic disease on the child's functioning in daily life. METHOD: A wide search of the literature resulted in the location of around 200 empirical studies with a focus on chronically ill children. This body of literature is discussed in three parts: (1) the academic and psychosocial adjustment of chronically ill children, (2) the ways chronically ill children cope with disease-related stress and other stressors, and (3) the effectiveness of coping strategies. RESULTS: Children with a chronic disease do not show lower school pe
