Applying the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to speech-language pathology social communication interventions for autistic children and youth: A scoping review.

The World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) aligns with the neurodiversity paradigm in viewing autistic people's social communication holistically and in a strength-based manner. In this scoping review, we explored how social communication interventions for autistic children and youth map onto the domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health in the field of speech-language pathology. OVID Medline, OVID Embase, OVID PsycINFO and Web of Science databases were searched to identify relevant articles.

Clinical and genetic findings in autism spectrum disorders analyzed using exome sequencing.

UNLABELLED: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of complex neurodevelopmental disorders and is characterized by impaired reciprocal social interaction and communication, as well as the presence of restricted interests and stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. As a complex neurodevelopmental disorder, the phenotype and severity of autism are extremely heterogeneous, with differences from one patient to another. Chromosome microarray (CMA) and fragile X syndrome analyses has been used as a powerful tool to identify new candidate genes for ASD. METHODS: In the present study, CMA was

Genetic and epigenetic changes to the glucocorticoid receptor gene (NR3C1) and cognition in major depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have found that hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis abnormalities are related to the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) and cognitive functioning. Our aim was to assess the influence of genetic polymorphisms and methylation levels in three different promoter regions throughout the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene NR3C1 on cognitive performance in MDD. Plausible interactions with childhood adversity and mediation relationships between genetic and epigenetic variables were explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included a total of 64 MDD pa

The link of adverse childhood experiences and attachment to maladaptive personality traits in adults diagnosed with substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive personality traits are often associated with adverse childhood experiences and substance use disorders. At the same time, there is a multidirectional relationship between experiencing life stressors and maladaptive personality traits. A variable that also enters these relationships is relational attachment, which has an impact on an individual's overall functioning. We aimed to examine these interconnections in a clinical sample. METHODS: A clinical sample of adult patients with substance use disorder (n = 63, mage = 38.87 ± 10.34 years, 71.43% men) was assembled. The

A randomised controlled clinical and cost effectiveness trial of an online integrated bipolar parenting intervention (IBPI) compared to treatment as usual in improving child emotional and behavioural outcomes: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental health problem linked to substantial personal and social costs. Many individuals living with bipolar disorder are parents. Due to the nature of the condition, parents with BD often experience challenges in delivering consistent parenting. In addition, up to 60% of their children experience at least one mental health problem in childhood and are at increased risk of future severe mental health problems including bipolar disorder. This paper describes the rationale and protocol for a definitive randomised controlled trial of a new digital inte

Interoception in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesize current research on interoception in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) across the lifespan. A total of 31 studies meeting stringent inclusion and quality criteria were identified, incorporating both descriptive and numerical analyses of cardiac interoceptive accuracy (cIA), interoceptive sensibility (IS), and interoceptive awareness (IAW) in children, adolescents, and adults with ASD. The meta-analysis of five adult studies using comparable assessment tools found no significant differences in cIA between adults with

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy in Persons With Personality Disorders: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Adverse childhood experiences contribute to the development of personality disorders (PDs). Although trauma-focused interventions are effective for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), their effect on PD symptoms is less established. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in reducing PD symptoms compared with a waiting list, regardless of PTSD status. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This 2-arm, multicenter, single-blind, randomized clinical trial was performed in the specialized outpatient departments of 2 clin

The Relationship Between Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Infant/Child-Caregiver Attachment: A Scoping Review.

Introduction: Secure infant/child-caregiver attachment is crucial for the development of social and emotional functioning and can affect long-term outcomes, such as adult relationships, but it may also be influenced by prenatal and early childhood risk factors. Children with a history of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have a complex spectrum of strengths and difficulties and often have the additional risk of early life adversity. There is some evidence that children with PAE are at increased risk of insecure attachment, but it is unclear whether this is consistent or why it is the case. No pu

Emotional maltreatment shapes the relationship between psychosocial functioning and hippocampal structure in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus and amygdala are important limbic structures involved in memory, emotional regulation, and stress response, which are pivotal for social interactions, everyday functioning, and participation in community life. However, the presumably bidirectional relationship between limbic structure and psychosocial functioning-and the potential moderating role of early-life environmental risk factors-remains poorly understood in schizophrenia spectrum (SSD) and mood disorders (MOD). METHODS: Structural 3 T MRI data were collected from SSD (n = 64) and MOD (n = 66) patients as we

Bipolar disorder in children, adolescents, and young adults. Part 1. Clinical symptoms and differential diagnosis. Recommendations under the patronage of the Executive Board of the Polish Psychiatric Association, National Consultants in the field of Psychiatry and National Consultants in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Bipolar disorder (BD) occurring in children and adolescents may have a different clinical course than that diagnosed in adults, while there are no different criteria in the diagnostic classifications used. Among patients under 18 years of age, irritability, atypical course of depressive episodes, mixed episodes or very rapid phase change are much more frequently observed. Diagnostic difficulties are also overlapped by those resulting from the need to differentiate BD from other disorders which have their onset in childhood and adolescence; the probability of their coexistence should be conside

Do white matter microstructural alterations associated with childhood maltreatment explain psychopathology in early adulthood?-a longitudinal neuroimaging study.

The current study aims to identify tracts in which white-matter changes at age 19 interweave with different experiences of childhood abuse and neglect and whether these changes can explain psychopathology at ages 19 and 22. IMAGEN is a longitudinal, genetic, neuroimaging database in which community adolescents were followed from 14 to 22 years-old across eight sites in Europe. This study includes participants (n = 769, 55% females; Mage = 18.41 and 21.85) with high-quality DTI data who completed the Childhood Maltreatment Questionnaire and self-reported psychopathology symptoms at ages 19 and

Assessing trauma-related symptomatology in the Netherlands: the Dutch Global Psychotrauma Screen (GPS).

Background: Most adults have experienced at least one Potentially Traumatic Event (PTE) in their life. Yet, many individuals who develop adverse outcomes such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are not identified and therefore not treated. Hence, there is a need for better screening tools for trauma-related disorders after exposure to PTEs.Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess validity and reliability of the Dutch version of the Global Psychotrauma Screen (GPS), an easy-to-administer transdiagnostic screener for trauma-related disorders, using a community-based sample of t

Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Educational Context: A Detailed Case Report.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside the presence of repetitive and restrictive behaviours. The diagnosis is based on the criteria outlined in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and requires a multidisciplinary and longitudinal clinical approach. Early symptom identification and timely intervention significantly influence treatment outcomes and the child's functional capacity. This case report presents a male child with pronounced

Neurophysiological alterations during sensory processing in autism - a meta-analysis.

While sensory processing alterations in autism are well-documented, the neurophysiological correlates remain unclear. This meta-analysis examined differences in early event-related potentials (ERP) and event-related fields (ERF) between autistic and non-autistic individuals using electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography to identify neurophysiological alterations that may underlie variations in sensory perception, communication, and social interaction in autism. Following PRISMA guidelines, a database search was conducted for peer-reviewed studies published from January 1980 onwards. Impact of Screen Time on Language Development and Vocabulary Acquisition in Early Childhood: A Systematic Review.

Language development in the first few years of life is critical for later academic and social success. With the increasing use of digital devices among preschoolers, there have been concerns about the potential impact of screen time on language outcomes. Existing research presents mixed findings, making it necessary to synthesize current evidence. This systematic review aimed to examine and synthesize empirical evidence on the relationship between screen time and language development in early childhood, with emphasis on factors such as device type, content quality, socioeconomic status, and pa

Exploring self-regulation deficits in sensory over-responsivity disorder: A preschool comparative analysis.

Sensory Over-Responsivity Disorder (SORD) is characterized by extreme sensitivity to everyday sensory input, which can interfere with children's emotional, behavioral and social development. Despite growing interest, limited research has explored its developmental effects in the absence of other psychiatric diagnoses. This study investigated self-regulation and related clinical features in preschool children with SORD who did not meet diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or obsessive-compulsive disorder. The sample included 15 child

Interpersonal guilt as a pathway linking childhood trauma and personality dysfunction: The contribution of epistemic mistrust.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma is strongly implicated in personality dysfunction. Control Mastery Theory emphasizes the role of pathogenic beliefs and interpersonal guilt in generating and sustaining psychopathology. Epistemic mistrust (EM) undermines social learning and relational functioning. This study is the first to investigate the relationship between interpersonal guilt and EM, and their joint mediating role in the link between childhood trauma and personality dysfunction. METHOD: 275 participants completed self-report measures of childhood trauma, interpersonal guilt, EM, and personalit
