Psychotropic medication use in school-aged children in foster care and residential care within child protective services.

BACKGROUND: Children in the care of child protective services are treated with psychotropic medication at rates that far exceed those seen in the general population. OBJECTIVE: This study documents the rates of psychotropic medication use among school-aged children in two groups: 1) foster care; and 2) residential care. Socio-demographic variables and mental disorders that predict psychotropic medication use, polypharmacy (≥2 medication), and multiclass polypharmacy (≥3 medication classes) were also examined. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample consisted of children aged 5 to 12 years in fo

Autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder traits as predictors of tic phenomenology in children and adolescents.

The co-existence of autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in tic disorders is a key factor influencing clinical decision-making. Given the shared clinical features and a potentially overlapping aetiology, the need to identify specific tic characteristics associated with these conditions remains. The current study subsequently sought to identify tic phenomenology uniquely predicted by autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder traits in children and adolescents. Data from 473 5-16-year-olds from the 2004 British Child and Adolescent Mental Health Survey with motor and/or

Prevalence of chronic pain among U.S. children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) affect up to 15% of children in the United States and are associated with co-occurring health challenges such as chronic pain, which can negatively affect development and quality of life. Increased risk of chronic pain in children with NDDs remains poorly understood; this study aimed to estimate chronic pain prevalence among children with NDDs and explore whether this association differs by sex. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of children participating in the 2022 to 2023 National Survey of Children's Health (age 3-17 years, n

Efficacy and safety of ecopipam for Tourette syndrome: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent motor and vocal tics. Dopamine D2 receptor antagonists can reduce tic severity but are frequently limited by metabolic, sedative, and extrapyramidal adverse effects. Ecopipam is a selective dopamine D1/D5 receptor antagonist with a potentially distinct tolerability profile. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ecopipam in patients with Tourette syndrome using updated randomized evidence. DESIGN: Systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials. D

Systematic Literature Review on Public Health Impacts of Tourette Syndrome and Persistent Tic Disorders: General Health, Health Conditions, and Health Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The association of tic disorders and physical health has not been comprehensively described. This systematic review summarized the associations between indicators of physical health (e.g., health-related quality of life [HR-QoL]), health conditions, and health behaviors with Tourette syndrome (TS) and persistent tic disorders (PTD) in individuals across the lifespan. METHODS: We used multiple databases to search the literature through March 5, 2025, and identified 84 studies published in English in 2003 or later that reported health-related outcomes among individuals with TS/PTD a

Aberrant brain functional connectivity is associated with clinical symptoms in tourette syndrome: a triple network model perspective.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor/vocal tics and premonitory urges. The triple network model (TNM)-including the salience network (SAN), frontoparietal network (FPN, also known as control network, Con), and default mode network (DMN)-provides a framework for understanding large-scale brain dysfunction. However, the TNM's role in the "urge-to-tic" mechanism in pediatric TS remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize network-level functional connectivity (FC) within the TNM in pediatric TS, examine its associations with clinical symptoms, and pr

Comorbidity burden and treatment patterns in Tourette syndrome and persistent motor or vocal tic disorder.

UNLABELLED: This study compares Persistent Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder (PMVT) and Tourette Syndrome (TS) in a pediatric population, clarifying their relationship and exploring the validity of a continuous "Tic Spectrum Disorder" (TSD). We retrospectively analyzed data from 207 pediatric patients diagnosed with PMVT or TS. Analyses included group comparisons and multivariate ordinal logistic regression to identify factors independently associated with treatment burden. The cohort comprised 128 (61.8%) TS patients and 79 (38.2%) PMVT patients. The median age at tic onset was 7 years (interquarti

MindTS-MMD: A Chinese Multimodal Dataset for Emotion Expression Analysis in Children with Tourette Syndrome.

Multimodal resources for emotion expression analysis in pediatric clinical populations remain limited, particularly for children with Tourette syndrome (TS). MindTS-MMD was developed as a Chinese multimodal dataset to support computational research on emotional expression and tic-related behavior in this population. The dataset contains 10,034 instance-level samples from 60 children with TS aged 6-12 years, collected through semi-structured emotion-elicitation tasks. Each sample includes available symbolic representations from three modalities-visual, acoustic, and semantic-and is linked to a

Persistent tic disorders are associated with 17q12 duplications.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) and Persistent Tic Disorder (PTD) are childhood-onset neuropsychiatric conditions with high heritability. Due to current sample size limitations, identifying TS/PTD risk genes has been challenging. This study addressed this issue by conducting a meta-analysis of microarray copy number variant (CNV) studies from three TS/PTD genomics consortia, supplemented with new data from 3291 cases. This approach more than doubled the sample size of previous TS/PTD CNV studies, with CNV calls generated from 5725 TS/PTD cases and 10,982 matched controls. The results confirmed that TS/

Animal models of Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders.

Tic disorders (TD) present considerable challenges in research due to their intricate and multifaceted nature. Their primary symptoms, tics, often co-occur with other comorbid conditions that overlap with other psychiatric and movement disorders. Tic development and expression are associated with alterations in different neurotransmitter systems, genetic factors, and environmental influences. However, the current understanding regarding the underlying causes and mechanism remains limited, with the available treatments lacking specificity and efficacy. To address these complexities, numerous an

Understanding tics and neurodevelopmental disorders through lived experience: The first-person experience and the parent perspective.

For many individuals with Tourette, navigating everyday judgments from strangers and peers alike can be as much of a challenge as the tics. Tourette-awareness campaigns and the rise of social media support communities have done significant work to improve the public's understanding and acceptance of tic disorders, but individuals living with it still experience unfortunate misunderstandings about their tics -- sometimes in sensitive environments, like airports -- which makes for a nervous base-pressure that "Touretters" can feel in their day-to-day and which can inflame their ticcing. Social d

A case of tic improvement following tipepidine administration in a boy with Tourette syndrome comorbid with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Tourette Syndrome (TS) is defined by motor and vocal tics that begin in childhood and persist for over a year. TS causes difficulties in daily life and lowers self-esteem, yet pharmacological treatment options for TS remain limited. Tipepidine, administered in this case report, is generally used as a safe and inexpensive cough suppressant. Recent studies have suggested that tipepidine may improve symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the clinical course of a boy with TS, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in

Attitudes towards Tourette syndrome and schizophrenia amongst psychology students.

INTRODUCTION: Both people with schizophrenia (SCZ) and Tourette syndrome (TS) have been found to be commonly stigmatized, but stereotypes held for both have never been directly compared. Clinicians and students of healthcare professions have been shown to also be affected by stereotypical beliefs. Media portrayals frequently perpetuate stereotypes, while accurate depictions could raise awareness and reduce stigma. METHODS: The aim of this study was to compare stereotypes regarding SCZ and TS and their associations with social media consumption. We conducted an online survey amongst psychology

Medication use and treatment patterns in children and adolescents with chronic tic disorders: an EMTICS study.

The treatment of tic disorders in children and adolescents poses significant challenges, especially when comorbid conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are present. Pharmacological treatments are often guided by clinical judgment, prescriber preferences, and medication availability. This study describes pharmacological treatment use in a large cohort of children and adolescents with chronic tic disorders (CTDs). We analyzed baseline data from the European Multicenter Tics in Children Study (EMTICS) to examine associations bet

Acute tic exacerbations: Tic status, malignant Tourette syndrome, tic attacks, tic fits, and other misfits.

Acute tic exacerbations in Tourette syndrome (TS) and other tic disorders are influenced by biologic, psychologic, and social factors. Different terms have been used to describe acute tic exacerbations, including tic status, malignant TS, tic attacks, and tic fits. This review traces the evolution of our understanding of acute tic exacerbations and examines the emerging clinical constructs, highlighting the overlapping features and diagnostic ambiguities of such episodes. Common features include repetitive movements lasting from minutes to hours that are rarely suppressible, cause significant

Deep Learning for Automated Tic Detection and Prediction in Tourette Syndrome Using Electromyography and Video.

Tourette syndrome is characterized by involuntary motor and vocal tics, which are challenging to monitor objectively. This study evaluated convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Transformer models on EMG and video data ('Rest', 'Tic', and 'Voluntary Movement') for detection and prediction. We hypothesized that EMG windows <5s would better capture tics and improve detection and prediction accuracy. 685 EMG recordings (n = 16 participants) were each segmented into 1-, 5-, and 10-second windows. Each model was trained on clinical EMG and validated on held-out data, using corresponding expert-an
