OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness and safety of the clonidine adhesive patch in treating tic disorders.
METHOD: A total of 437 patients, who met Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders-third edition diagnostic criteria for transient tic disorder (5%), chronic motor or vocal tic disorder (40%) or Tourette disorder (55%), aged 6-18 years, were divided randomly into an active treatment group and a clinical control group. Participants in the active treatment group were treated with a clonidine adhesive patch and participants in the clinical c

Tics are repetitive and sudden purposeless movements. Phenomenologically tics are differentiated as simple or complex, motor or vocal. Transient forms, which last less than 1 year, occur frequently in child hood. For Tourette syndrome, multiple simple and complex motor and vocal tics are present for more than one year. Frequently, additional symptoms of an obsessive-compulsive disorder or an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are present. There is no therapy for the cause of tics. For minor symptoms or if a transient tic disorder is suspected, the use of medications should be avoided. In

The aim of the study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Polish adaptation of the YGTSS scale in a study screening a population of 1579 schoolchildren for tic disorders. The scale was administered to 60 children with diagnosis of a tic disorder (15 had transient tic disorder; 37 had chronic tic disorder, and 8 had Tourette disorder). Reliability was computed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and by evaluation of its internal consistency. Theoretical validity of the scale was evaluated using factor analysis. The computed Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the YGTSS scale was 0.73.

PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate the significance of psychiatric consultation in children with frequent eye blinking.
METHODS: Fifty children < 16 years of age with frequent eye blinking underwent a psychiatric examination after undergoing a detailed ophthalmologic examination and receiving appropriate treatment. Patients with squinting related to intermittent exotropia or uncorrected refractive errors were excluded. The severity of tic symptoms and the differences in mothering behavior and childhood behavioral problems between the children with tic and normal children were assessed.

We report a 12-year-old male patient who developed transient motor and vocal tics twelve days after carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Cranial magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the patient showed bilateral symmetric hyperintensity in the caudate nucleus and putamen. Tic disorder was successfully treated with haloperidol. Thirty-three months after CO poisoning, the patient was asymptomatic and MRI revealed atrophy in caudate nucleus and putamen. The mechanism of tic disorder in CO intoxication is discussed.

A tic is an involuntary, sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrrhythmic, stereotyped, motor movement or vocalization. This paper reviews clinical, pathophysiological, epidemiological and treatment issues of tic disorders. The clinical presentation of tic disorders with simple and complex motor or vocal tics is reviewed in detail. The most common psychiatric comorbid conditions, such as personality disorder (PD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Self-Destructive Behavior (SDB) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are presented too. All forms of tics may be exacerbated by anger or str

BACKGROUND: Tic disorders presenting during adulthood have infrequently been described in the medical literature. Most reports depict adult onset secondary tic disorders caused by trauma, encephalitis, and other acquired conditions. Only rare reports describe idiopathic adult onset tic disorders, and most of these cases represent recurrent childhood tic disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a large series of patients with tic disorders presenting during adulthood, to compare clinical characteristics between groups of patients, and to call attention to this potentially disabling and underrecognise

Tic disorders and Tourette's syndrome are conditions that primary care physicians are likely to encounter. Up to 20 percent of children have at least a transient tic disorder at some point. Once believed to be rare, Tourette's syndrome is now known to be a more common disorder that represents the most complex and severe manifestation of the spectrum of tic disorders. Tourette's syndrome is a chronic familial disorder with a fluctuating course; the long-term outcome is generally favorable. Although the exact underlying pathology has yet to be determined, evidence indicates a disorder localized

A case of psychogenic cough tic is presented to demonstrate the problems and complications that can arise from misdiagnosis of this dramatic and disabling disorder. It can be confused with TS and may be treated more aggressively than is beneficial. A single case with a recurrent course is described with the hypothesis of a possible autoimmune contribution. The combination of organic precipitants and emotional maintaining factors suggests that psychogenic cough tic is a condition that lies between somatization and transient tic disorder.

The diagnostic utility of functional analyses has been demonstrated with a variety of behaviors including tics. Whereas previous analyses have focused on the discovery of maintaining variables to aid in treatment prescription, we employed a functional analysis to confirm a clinical diagnosis. An 11 year old male student, who had not been previously diagnosed with a tic disorder, exhibited multiple vocal tic-like behaviors which had persisted over a period of time. Teacher reports conflicted regarding the possible etiology of these behaviors. Hence, a functional analysis was conducted in the cl

We report a case of transient tic disorder with abnormal findings on 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT. The patient was 5-year-old girl with vocal and motor tic. There was no evidence of structural abnormality on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Electroencephalogram (EEG) showed spikes and sharp waves on both frontal lobes and parietal lobes (left-side dominant). 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT demonstrated focal regions of hyperperfusion in the both frontal lobes, both parietal lobes and right temporal lobe corresponding to the abnormal findings detected by EEG. It also demonstrated an area of hyperperfusion in the right

To evaluate the frequency of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) in children, 3034 students in three schools in a single school district in greater Los Angeles were monitored frequently over a 2-year period by a school psychologist thoroughly familiar with the symptoms of the disorder. A portion of the cases were also evaluated in a TS clinic. A total of 14 males fulfilled the Tourette Syndrome Association research criteria for definite TS. When corrected for the number of students in special education classes in the monitored schools, the frequency of definite TS in males was 1 in 152. An a

Transient tic disorder (TTD) has not generally been considered part of the spectrum of Tourette's syndrome (TS). We studied a large kindred affected by TS and identified two family members with TTD who are very likely obligate carriers of the TS gene. Our observations indicate that TTD is a possible expression of the TS gene and that individuals with TTD may transmit TS to their offspring.
