Eating Behaviors, Caregiver Feeding Interactions, and Dietary Patterns of Children Born Preterm: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Infants born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) often experience feeding problems during hospitalization. Whether difficulties persist or have long-term sequelae on childhood eating is unclear. We aimed to describe the oromotor eating skills (e.g., chewing/swallowing), eating behaviors (e.g., food neophobia), food parenting practices (e.g., pressure to eat), and dietary patterns of preterm children during late infancy (6-12 mo) and early childhood (>12 mo-7 y) and to determine whether these differed from those of term-born peers. We identified 67 articles (57 unique studies) for inclusion. We us

Feeding Problems in Patients with Noonan Syndrome: A Narrative Review.

Noonan syndrome (NS) belongs to the group of Noonan syndrome spectrum disorders (NSSD), which is a group of phenotypically related conditions. Feeding problems are often present not only in infancy but also in childhood, and even beyond that period. We describe the different aspects of feeding problems using a (theoretical) concept proposed in 2019. More than 50% of infants with NS develop feeding problems, and up to half of these infants will be tube-dependent for some time. Although, in general, there is a major improvement between the age of 1 and 2 years, with only a minority still having

Fathers' Sensitivity in Infancy and Externalizing Problems in Middle Childhood: The Role of Coparenting.

The present study examined the role of father sensitivity and couple coparenting quality in the first 2 years of life in relation to the development of externalizing behavior problems in middle childhood, focusing on the unique role of fathers. In this study, 125 mothers, fathers, and their first-born children were followed from 8 months to age 7 years. Paternal sensitivity was rated when infants were 8 and 24 months old. Fathers were videotaped at home playing, feeding, and changing their 8-month-old infants' clothes. They also were videotaped in a lab playing with their 24-month-olds and sol

Factors associated with the early emergence of atypical feeding behaviours in infants and young children: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Atypical feeding behaviours such as significantly limited food preferences, hypersensitivity to food textures or temperatures and pocketing food without swallowing are common concerns in child health. Current reports indicate an inter-relationship between early growth, feeding problems and developmental disorders, yet little is known about how these behaviours develop in early childhood. There is also a lack of consensus about clinical definitions for atypical feeding behaviours, diagnostic thresholds and the associated precursors. To date, there has been no synthesis of the extant

Case Report: Hepatic Adenomatosis in a Patient With Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder caused by the lack of expression of genes on the paternally inherited chromosome region 15q11.2-q13. It is a multisystem disorder that is characterized by severe hypotonia with poor suck and feeding difficulties in early infancy, followed in early childhood by excessive eating and gradual development of morbid obesity. The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is high, particularly in obese patients. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has also been reported in some patients with PWS. Liver adenomatosis is a benign vascular lesion of the liver, d

In-depth characterisation of a cohort of individuals with missense and loss-of-function variants disrupting FOXP2.

BACKGROUND: Heterozygous disruptions of FOXP2 were the first identified molecular cause for severe speech disorder: childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), and yet few cases have been reported, limiting knowledge of the condition. METHODS: Here we phenotyped 28 individuals from 17 families with pathogenic FOXP2-only variants (12 loss-of-function, five missense variants; 14 males; aged 2 to 62 years). Health and development (cognitive, motor, social domains) were examined, including speech and language outcomes with the first cross-linguistic analysis of English and German. RESULTS: Speech disorde

Different protein intake in the first year and its effects on adiposity rebound and obesity throughout childhood: 11 years follow-up of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Infant feeding affects child growth and later obesity risk. We examined whether protein supply in infancy affects the adiposity rebound, body mass index (BMI) and overweight and obesity up to 11 years of age. METHODS: We enrolled healthy term infants from five European countries in a double blind randomized trial, with anticipated 16 examinations within 11 years follow-up. Formula-fed infants (n = 1090) were randomized to isoenergetic formula with higher or lower protein content within the range stipulated by EU legislation in 2001. A breastfed reference group (n =

Long-term evolution of neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy: the FRENCHI findings.

Only few studies report long-term evolution of patients with neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI). We report data from a 54-patient cohort followed up in the French network for rare respiratory diseases (RespiRare). Demographic characteristics and respiratory and nutritional evolution were collected at the time of the patient's last scheduled visit. The mean duration of follow-up was 68 months (5 months to 18 years). Fifteen patients (27.8%) were considered clinically cured. During follow-up, hospitalizations for wheezy exacerbations were reported in 35 patients (55%), and asthma

Eating Behaviors of Children with Autism-Pilot Study.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the most recognized neuropsychiatric disorder of childhood. Comorbid conditions (such as feeding disorders) are more common among people with autism than among the general population. The most frequent somatic disorders in autistic children include the gastrointestinal disorders observed in 46-91% of patients. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the nutrition of children with autism, with particular emphasis placed on feeding in the first year of life, in comparison to the group of healthy peers. Participants included 75 Caucasian children (41 chil

[Clinical practice guidelines for Prader-Willi syndrome].

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is the first multi-systemic genetic disorder known to be caused by imprinting defect. The clinical manifestations of PWS vary with age. At the prenatal stage, decreased fetal movements are frequent. The major clinical manifestations during neonatal period include hypotonia, weak cry, poor suck and feeding difficulties. Growth retardation and delayed language and motor development are observed during infancy. Short stature, small hands and feet, cognitive deficiency are noticed in the childhood. At adolescence, prominent growth retardation, obesity, gonadal dysplasia

Do early-life eating habits predict later autistic traits? Results from a population-based study.

Eating problems are common among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but it is unknown to what extent infant eating behavior is associated with later autistic traits. As eating behavior is currently not included in ASD screening instruments, it is important to evaluate whether infant eating behavior predicts later autistic traits and might therefore be used to enhance the early detection of ASD. We investigated the association of breastfeeding and eating behavior during infancy with later autistic traits in the population-based Generation R cohort. We included 3546 mother-child dyads
