Severe combined immunodeficiency with cartilage-hair hypoplasa: in vitro response to thymosin and attempted reconstitution.

The present report describes an infant with severe combined immunodeficiency and cartilage-hair hypoplasia whose lymphocytes responded to thymosin in vitro. Immunologic evaluation was undertaken at 4 1/2 months of age following a history of recurrent severe infection. Family history included three cousins who died in early infancy, one from streptococcal meningitis and pneumonia, one from generalized varicella, and another from reticuloendotheliosis. Quantitative immunoglobulins were markedly depressed: IgG 141, IgA 0, and IgM 24 mg/100 ml. There was an absolute lymphopenia, multiple skin test

Acute bacterial meningitis secondary to gamma hemolytic streptococcus. Case report and review of the literature.

Gamma hemolytic streptococcal meningitis in a 17-year-old boy resulted in a severe purulent reaction and death. Review of the literature shows only one other case of a gamma hemolytic streptococcus as the cause of bacterial meningitis in the absence of endocarditis.

[Infections in newborn infants caused to B-streptococci].

An increased morbidity by Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococci) during the perinatal period was to be found in some countries since 1961. Six cases of group B streptococcal meningitis were confirmed by the Central Streptococcus Laboratory of the GDR from July to December 1975. Therefore it is necessary to look for group B streptococcal infection in certain cases of diseases of the newborn. In a short review of literature the clinical signs (acute onset with respiratory distress, sepsis or late onset with meningitis), prevalence, source of infection and therapy (ampicillin or a combin

Group B streptococcal meningitis associated with otitis media.

A full-term infant of an appropriate size for gestational age was found to have meningitis due to Lancefield group B beta-hemolytic streptococci at 8 weeks of age. On admission, the baby had bulging tympanic membranes Lancefield group B beta-hemolytic streptococci were isolated from aspirate of the middle ear, supporting the importance of otitis media in the pathogenesis of late-onset Lancefield group B beta-hemolytic streptococcal meningitis.

Rapid identification of group B streptococci by counterimmunoelectrophoresis.

Beta-hemolytic streptococcal isolates have been examined by counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) with group B antiserum to determine whether this techinque is of value in the rapid identification of group B strains. Ninety stock cultures and 100 clinical isolates of beta-hemolytic streptococci including representatives of groups A, D, C, G, and B were inoculated into Todd-Hewitt broth; after incubation at 37 C for 1, 2, 3, and 4 h, aliquots of the whole broth cultures were removed and tested by CIE. Antigen was not regularly detected in the 1-, 2-, and 3-h samples, but after 4 h all 126 group B

Meningitis caused by Streptococcus in adults.

Meningitis caused by Streptococcus is uncommon in adults. Otitis media, mastoiditis, sinusitis, or trauma has antedated most cases reported in the past. Data on 10 recent cases suggest changes in the current pathogenesis of streptococcal meningitis in adults and emphasize the importance of accurate streptococcal speciation. Endocarditis was present in five cases; trauma played a role in two others. Brain abscess, corticosteroids, alcoholic cirrhosis, and peritonitis secondary to chronic peritoneal dialysis were etiologic factors in five patients. Otitis media, mastoiditis, and sinusitis were c

Streptococcal infection in young pigs. IV. An outbreak of streptococcal meningitis in weaned pigs.

Twenty-eight pigs died in an outbreak of streptococcal meningitis in an East Anglian herd. Most were 10-14 weeks old. The outbreak lasted from January to April and was finally controlled by antibiotic therapy. A similar number of losses had occurred in the previous year though no diagnosis had then been made. The causal agent appeared to be a haemolytic streptococcus belonging to group D and provisionally designated Streptococcus suis type 2. It is probably identical with de Moor's group R streptococcus which causes a similar disease in the Netherlands. It is serologically distinct from Strept
