There is a moral obligation to minimize pain in pigs used for human benefit. In livestock production, pigs experience pain caused by management procedures, e.g., castration and tail docking, injuries from fighting or poor housing conditions, "management diseases" like mastitis or streptococcal meningitis, and at parturition. Pigs used in biomedical research undergo procedures that are regarded as painful in humans, but do not receive similar levels of analgesia, and pet pigs also experience potentially painful conditions. In all contexts, accurate pain assessment is a prerequisite in (a) the e

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is an infrequent cause of meningitis in adults, usually affecting elderly patients and those with serious underlying disease. It is more commonly recognised as one of the leading aetiological agents of neonatal sepsis following maternally derived infection during pregnancy. We report a case of a previously healthy 26-year-old man who presented with fevers, confusion and headache. Lumbar puncture results were consistent with bacterial meningitis, and blood cultures grew GBS. To the best of our knowledge, our patient represents one of the few reported cases of GBS men

OBJECTIVES: We report on the incidence, clinical characteristics, and bacterial genotype of group A streptococcal (GAS) meningitis in the Netherlands.
METHODS: We assessed the incidence, clinical characteristics, and outcome of patients with GAS meningitis from a nationwide cohort study of adults with community-acquired bacterial meningitis in the Netherlands from 2006 to 2013.
RESULTS: GAS was identified in 26 of 1322 patients with community-acquired bacterial meningitis (2%); 9 cases (35%) occurred in the first four months of 2013. GAS meningitis was often preceded by otitis or sinusitis (

Mucoid (MTB313) and nonmucoid (MTB314) strains of group A streptococcus emm type 1 were simultaneously isolated from a single patient suffering from streptococcal meningitis. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that MTB313 carried a nucleotide substitution within rocA, which generated an amber termination codon.

OBJECTIVE: To describe cerebrovascular diseases related to late-onset group B Streptococcus (GBS) meningitis.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. Patients treated for cerebrovascular complication of late-onset GBS meningitis over 5 years were identified through neuroradiology and microbiology databases. Patient charts were reviewed with regard to clinical presentation, laboratory findings, including GBS subtype, treatment, clinical course, and outcome. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging was reviewed with special emphasis on stroke pattern and cerebrovascular findings.
RESULTS: Fourteen

Bacterial meningitis after epidural catheter placement is rare. We describe a case in which a parturient received labor epidural analgesia for vaginal delivery complicated by dural puncture. The patient developed postdural puncture headache and underwent 2 separate epidural blood patch procedures. She subsequently developed a headache with fever and focal neurologic deficits. She was treated with broad spectrum antibiotics for presumed meningitis, and she made a full recovery. Blood cultures subsequently grew group B streptococcus.

BACKGROUND: Although cerebrovascular complications of bacterial meningitis are common, postmeningitic cerebral vasospasm significant enough to result in ischemic injury has been reported in only limited fashion.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a case of severe cerebral vasospasm following streptococcal meningitis managed successfully with emergency suboccipital decompression, extracranial-intracranial bypass, intra-arterial vasodilator infusion, and maximal medical therapy. To our knowledge, this may be the first case in which surgical cerebral revascularization has been utilized to limit ische

We report the case of a 47 year-old female with Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B beta-hemolytic streptococcus) meningitis complicated by hemorrhagic stroke. The patient presented to the emergency department with altered mental status, agitation, confusion, respiratory distress and fever of one-day duration. Labs showed left shift leukocytosis. CSF exhibited a high white blood cell count with a predominant population of polymononuclear cells, high glucose and protein concentration. CSF cultures grew S. agalactiae. Despite appropriate antimicrobial treatment, her mental status did not improve a

OBJECTIVE: Controlling vaccine-preventable infectious diseases is a public health priority in French Guiana but there is currently no epidemiological data on pediatric bacterial meningitis in this overseas department. Our aim was to describe data related to pediatric bacterial meningitis in French Guiana and compare it with that of metropolitan France.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study from 2000 to 2010 to describe the clinical picture, biological data, epidemiology, and outcome of pediatric bacterial meningitis case patients in French Guiana.
RESULTS: The median age of

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is currently the leading cause of neonatal meningitis. This is due to its ability to survive and multiply in the bloodstream and interact with specialized human brain microvascular endothelial cells (hBMEC), which constitute the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The exact mechanism(s) of GBS-BBB penetration is still largely unknown. We and others have shown that GBS interacts with components of the extracellular matrix. In this study, we demonstrate that GBS of representative serotypes binds immobilized and cell surface fibronectin and identify a putative fibronectin bindi

Background. Group A streptococcal (GAS) meningitis is rarely seen in the antenatal period, but it is associated with significant mortality. We present a case of a mid-trimester woman who developed fulminant meningitis following a rapid onset atypical presentation of infection with this organism. Case. A multiparous 23(+5)-week woman presented with a 10-day history of a non-productive cough associated with pyrexia. Within minutes of her admission she collapsed and lost consciousness; sepsis was suspected and cross-specialty care was initiated. She was managed empirically in extremis with broad-

Invasive group A streptococcal infections are potentially serious. The occurrence in the neonatal period and meningeal location are two unusual situations. The complications reported in the literature vary; we add the risk of thromboembolic events. We report the case of a newborn, admitted to our department at 22 days of life for late neonatal group A streptococcal meningitis and diffuse cerebral infarction lesions. Ultrasound and abdominal CT scan objectified the presence of portal vein thrombosis and cavernoma. Echocardiography, electrocardiogram, as well as coagulation and thrombophilia tes

BACKGROUND: We report a man with septic olecranon bursitis who had an early development of meningitis.
CASE SUMMARY: A 74-year-old man presented to the emergency room with malaise, headache, mental confusion, a fever unsuccessfully treated with oral NSAIDs and ice, and with a 10-day history of pain and swelling in his right elbow. Clinical and laboratory evaluation excluded other causes and microbiological evaluation documented a S. agalactiae infection. Antibiotic treatment induced a rapid improvement, without the development of side effects.
CONCLUSION: This is the first report on olecrano

PURPOSE: Aim of this study was to determine the spectrum and prevalence of pathological intracranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with acute bacterial meningitis.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified all consecutive patients with cerebral spinal fluid proven bacterial meningitis who presented at our neurology department between 2007 and 2012. Pathogenic agents and clinical symptoms were noted. MR-examinations were evaluated regarding presence and localization of pathological signal alterations in the different sequences by two neuroradiologists in consensus.

Group A streptococcal (GAS) meningitis in children are rare. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical, biological and outcome data on GAS meningitis recorded in the Bacterial Meningitis (BM) French Surveillance Network (GPIP/ACTIV). From 2001 through 2012, 4,564 children suffering from proven bacterial meningitis were recorded in the data base. Among them, 0.7 % were GAS infections. The median age was 5.6 years. A history of community acquired infection before the onset of GAS meningitis was frequent. Apart from the identification of the bacterial species, GAS meningitis were clinical
