[Ultrasound diagnosis of fetal infections: current possibilities and limitations].

INTRODUCTION: Fetal infections, particularly those caused by TORCH agents (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes), may significantly affect fetal growth and development, resulting in a substantial risk of morbidity and mortality. Since infections are mostly preventable causes of congenital anomalies, early diagnosis relies on serological and molecular testing and fetal ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of fetal infections and their detectable ultrasound features. METHOD: This retrospective s

Effects of electrical stimulation on the cardiogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells: A systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Electrical stimulation has emerged as a promising strategy for promoting cardiogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells; however, the available evidence remains highly heterogeneous across stimulation parameters, experimental platforms, and outcome measures. This systematic review synthesized the available in vitro evidence regarding the effects of electrical stimulation on MSC cardiogenic differentiation, with particular emphasis on stimulation parameters, experimental platforms and biological outcomes related to early cardiogenic commitment and structural maturation. Ocular Syphilis in Patients With Nonreactive Rapid Plasma Reagin and Positive Treponemal Serologies: A Retrospective Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Screening for syphilis increasingly relies on positive treponemal rather than nontreponemal tests (rapid plasma reagin [RPR]). We compared ocular syphilis in patients with nonreactive versus positive RPR. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study of ocular syphilis treated at 2 New England hospitals during 1996-2021 based on ophthalmologist-diagnosed eye findings and positive treponemal serology, regardless of RPR. We excluded patients with alternative diagnoses. We categorized RPR into nonreactive RPR, low-titer RPR (<1:8), and high-titer RPR (≥1:8) and com

HIV and Syphilis Coinfection in Pregnancy and Adverse Birth Outcomes in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing global syphilis incidence, little is known about the combined impact of maternal HIV and syphilis coinfection. We evaluated effects of HIV/syphilis coinfection in pregnancy on birth outcomes. METHODS: We conducted 2 prospective birth cohort studies in Uganda from 2017 to 2023. Our primary outcome was birthweight. Our secondary outcome was a composite adverse birth outcome (birthweight <2.5 kg, stillbirth, early neonatal death, or 5-min APGAR<7). We compared outcomes by HIV and Treponema pallidum particle agglutination assay (TPPA) seropositivity and fitted multi

World Health Organization-Recommended Periodic Presumptive Treatment Versus Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis for Sexually Transmitted Infection Control Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Kenya: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, in Kenya. Because nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) is not widely accessible, most gonorrhea and chlamydia infections go undiagnosed and are treated only if symptomatic. World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended periodic presumptive treatment (PPT) and doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) are both potential interventions to reduce the burden of bacterial STIs in this population. Neither has been rigorously tested a

Oral and anal shedding of Treponema pallidum in patients with syphilis in the DOXYVAC cohort.

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum (TP), has increased significantly in recent years in Western countries, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). Recent data suggest that ongoing transmission may be facilitated by undetected mucosal excretion of TP. This study focuses on patients who had incident syphilis during the DOXYVAC study in order to evaluate oral and anal excretion of TP by molecular biology before, during and after infection. METHODS: During the DOXYVAC study, incident syphilis was defined as new TP haemagglutinations assay positivity or

Long-term health effects of syphilis in cardiovascular diseases and neurological diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum, remains a significant public health concern globally. While early treatment can prevent the acute effects, syphilis has been linked to long-term neurological and cardiovascular complications. However, the magnitude of this association remains unclear. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the association between syphilis and the incidence of neurological and cardiovascular diseases, providing a comprehensive overview of the long-term health risks associated with syphilis infection. We systematically reviewed and synthesized data from 14 clinical trials pub

Anti-TP0136 Antibody Delayed Syphilis Wound Healing by Inhibiting Angiogenesis Through the VEGF-A Signaling Pathway: A Novel View in Nonhealing Syphilis Wounds.

Syphilis typically begins with a painless ulcer in the early stage, and most lesions resolve spontaneously. However, spontaneous healing is not universally observed, and reports of nonhealing ulcers in syphilis patients have increased in recent years. Angiogenesis plays a critical role in the wound-healing process during syphilis infection, and our previous work showed that anti-TP0136 antibodies delay lesion repair. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism by which anti-TP0136 antibodies impair syphilis wound healing, with a particular focus on angiogenesis. Using a syphilitic rabbit mod

Awareness, attitudes and early use of doxycycline prophylaxis among gbMSM in Ireland: findings from a 2025 community-based cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a growing public health challenge globally, with gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) disproportionately affected. Doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) has been shown in clinical trials to reduce syphilis and chlamydia, and has been incorporated into US and UK guidelines. However, community-level data in many European countries remain scarce. This study aimed to assess awareness, attitudes and early use of DoxyPEP among gbMSM in Ireland. METHODS: An anonymous, cross-sectional online survey was c

Prevalence and predictors of preconception medical and behavioral risks among soon-to-be married couples: A quantitative cross-sectional survey in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and neonatal morbidities and mortality remain a global public health concern. Although preconception risk assessment has been found to enhance maternal, fetal, neonatal, and child health outcomes, few studies have explored preconception risks among premarital couples. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and predictors of preconception medical and behavioral risks among soon-to-be-married couples. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional survey of 623 couples attending prenuptial meetings in rural and urban settings (churches and sector offices) was

Transfusion-Transmissible Infections (TTIs) among blood donors in Ethiopia's Tigray region: a study of blood bank data from 2020 to 2023.

INTRODUCTION: Transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs) remain a major threat to blood safety, especially in resource-limited settings. In the Tigray region, where blood demand is high due to trauma, obstetric emergencies, and other medical needs, ensuring the safety of donated blood is critical. Limited data exist on the prevalence and trends of TTIs among blood donors in the region. METHOD: the study was conducted utilizing data from the Tigray Regional Blood Bank from 2020 to 2023. A total of 35,034 blood donations were analyzed, focusing on the prevalence of four key infections: HIV, sy

Integrating social cognitive theory with machine learning to predict MSM-women sexual behavior: a multicenter random forest model development study in China.

Understanding and predicting sexual behavior patterns through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is essential for identifying behavioral bridges that facilitate HIV transmission. MSM who engage in sexual activity with women (MSM-W) represent a critical yet underexplored subgroup in China. However, existing studies lack theory-driven predictive frameworks that explicitly integrate psychological mechanisms with robust analytics. This study aimed to develop and validate an SCT-guided machine-learning model to predict MSM-W behavior and to evaluate its discriminatory and calibration perform

BACKGROUND: There has been an increasing trend in bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England since the early 2000s. Since 2008, surveillance of STIs in England has been conducted using the Genitourinary Medicine Clinic Activity Dataset (hereafter referred to as 'GUMCAD'), a depersonalised dataset of all attendances at all publicly-commissioned sexual health services (SHS). The aim of is this article is to describe and evaluate the piloting and rollout of an enhanced specification of GUMCAD at SHS in England. METHODS: GUMCAD was enhanced in 2019 to allow SHS to report the gend

Decadal trends in HIV prevalence among socio-demographic groups and health behaviours in Ethiopia: a cross-sectional seroprevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Preventing HIV infections remains a key objective for global health initiatives. However, monitoring new infection rates and long-term prevalence trends is often underutilized in evaluating intervention success. This study assessed HIV prevalence patterns over the past decade across socio-demographic and behavioural groups to better understand the changing dynamics of transmission. METHODS: A health facility–based cross-sectional seroprevalence study was conducted using convenience sampling. Data were obtained daily through the District Health Information System and entered into Go
