In this paper, we present a deterministic model for the population dynamics of HIV/AIDS, wherein some individuals at the severe symptomatic phase of HIV develop serious opportunistic infections (OIs) such cryptococcal, tuberculous, pneumococcal, and other bacterial meningitis due to an inappropriate treatment or lack of counseling. OIs are responsible for significant mortality and disability on individuals with HIV in many countries. Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is among frequent OIs responsible for significant mortality and disability of individuals with HIV in limited resource settings. Howe

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCY: Meningitis happening in post spinal anesthesia is rare. But it has potentially life threatening or permanent neurological sequel if delayed or left untreated. The cause can be infectious or noninfectious. In this case, uncommon pathogen is described causing bacterial meningitis. Incidence varies from 0% to 0.04%.
CASE PRESENTATION: A term pregnant lady came to the Operation room (OR) for an emergency caesarian section(C/S) because of cervical dystocia. She has no history of known medical illness. The anesthetist planned to administer spinal anesthesia. Under asept

Since 2010, the introduction of an effective serogroup A meningococcal conjugate vaccine has led to the near-elimination of invasive Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A disease in Africa's meningitis belt. However, a significant burden of disease and epidemics due to other bacterial meningitis pathogens remain in the region. High-quality surveillance data with laboratory confirmation is important to monitor circulating bacterial meningitis pathogens and design appropriate interventions, but complete testing of all reported cases is often infeasible. Here, we use case-based surveillance data fro

INTRODUCTION: Meningitis is a major cause of mortality in southern Africa. We aimed to describe the aetiologies and frequencies of laboratory-confirmed fungal and bacterial meningitis among adults in a South African province with an 11% HIV prevalence, over 4 years.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, observational study of secondary laboratory data, extracted on all cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens submitted to public-sector laboratories in Gauteng province from 2009 through 2012. We calculated cause-specific incidence rates in the general and HIV-infected populations and used Poisson

Streptococcus agalactiae is a well-known pathogen during pregnancy and in neonates. Among non-pregnant adults, invasive infection, although rare, is showing increasing frequency, especially in chronically ill, immunosuppressed, or older patients. Although rare, the clinical features of meningeal infection caused by S. agalactiae are similar to other bacterial meningitis. The authors report the case of a middle-aged man previously diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and alcoholic liver cirrhosis, who was admitted at the emergency department with a Glasgow Coma Scale of 11/12, genera

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is one of the leading bacterial causes of invasive disease in populations without access to Hib conjugate vaccines (Hib-CV). India has recently decided to introduce Hib-CV into the routine immunization programme in selected States. Longitudinal data quantifying the burden of bacterial meningitis and the proportion of disease caused by various bacteria are needed to track the impact of Hib-CV once introduced. A hospital-based sentinel surveillance network was established at four places in the country and this study reports the results

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous meningitis caused by gram-negative bacilli in adult patients is uncommon and poorly characterized. Our objective is to describe and compare the characteristics and the outcome of adult patients with spontaneous gram-negative bacilli meningitis (GNBM) and spontaneous meningitis due to other pathogens.
METHODS: Prospective single hospital-based observational cohort study conducted between 1982 and 2006 in a university tertiary hospital in Barcelona (Spain). The Main Outcome Measure: In-hospital mortality.
RESULTS: Gram-negative bacilli meningitis was diagnosed in 40 (7%

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to evaluate clinical and laboratory findings and predisposing factors for Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) meningitis.
METHODS: 17 intensive care unit patients (12 M, 5 F), aged 54.4 +/- 15.3 yrs, were studied. CNS listeriosis was confirmed by culture of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or CSF pleocytosis coupled with Lm bacteriemia.
RESULTS: The frequency of central nervous system (CNS) listeriosis among patients with bacterial meningitis was 5.5%. Meningeal signs were present in all patients. 15 patients had impaired level of consciousness. Possible predisposing fa

A Substantial ratio of bacterial meningitis survivors suffers mild or serious intellectual and neuropsychological handicaps. We organized eighty subjects into three groups: 1) Pneumococcal meningitis (PM) who did not receive dexamethasone, 2) PM who received dexamethasone, 3) Other bacterial meningitis with different etiology. All subjects underwent Bender Visual Motor Gestalt test and age-appropriate Intelligence quotient (IQ) tests. The mean full-scale IQ scoring fell within normal range (90+/-17) in the post-meningitic cohort. There was no statistical difference between two pneumococcal gro

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is still a major cause of serious illness in many parts of the world. The newer diagnostic tests and neuroimaging methods are unlikely to be available in many developing countries. We attempt to identify simple parameters for early diagnosis. A retrospective study was performed to compare the clinical and laboratory features of cultured-confirmed, TBM (134) and other bacterial meningitis (709). Features independently predictive of TBM were studied by multivariate logistic regression to develop a diagnostic rule. Six features were found predictive: length of clinica

Neisseria meningitidis is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis and sepsis in the US, Europe and in many other parts of the world, including parts of sub-Saharan Africa (known as the African 'meningitis belt'). There are > 500000 cases of meningococcal disease annually with an estimated death toll of 135000 worldwide. Approximately 10 - 15 % of survivors experience significant morbidity in the form of neurological sequelae, including hearing loss, speech disorders, loss of limbs, mental retardation and paralysis. Disease is usually caused by N. meningitidis serogroups A, B, C, Y or W-135. Pr

Steroid therapy, in combination with antibiotics for bacterial meningitis in paediatric patients remains controversial. Steroids, and primarily dexamethasone a very potent anti-inflammatory agent, regulate the liberation of various cytokines and inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, released during bacterial meningitis and leading to long term complications. Several clinical trials studying infants and children with bacterial meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae have evaluated the beneficial effects of the administration of dexamethasone at the onset of antibiotherapy and demonstr
