INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis and cryptococcal infection of the central nervous system are common AIDS-associated opportunistic infections in tropical underdeveloped and developing countries. To date, research on these infections has focused on clinical, imaging, laboratory diagnosis, and animal models to elucidate the pathogenesis. There is paucity of information on astroglial and microglial alterations in the human nervous system following these infections.
METHODOLOGY: The pathomorphologic and morphometric alterations of astroglia and microglia in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus in case

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis is the severest and commonest form of central nervous system tuberculosis causing high mortality and morbidity. We aim to study the clinical, biochemical, and radiological characteristics of tuberculous meningitis in adult patients in Qatar and to calculate the incidence.
METHODS: A descriptive retrospective 7-year study was conducted at the Hamad General Hospital (the only tertiary referral center and sole health care provider for tuberculosis in Qatar) between the 1st of January 2006 and the 31st of December 2012, to describe the clinical presentation, dia

Tuberculous meningitis (TM), a common infectious disease of the central nervous system that is also seen in other types of tuberculosis infections, has higher mortality rates in young and middle-aged patients. TM is difficult to diagnose and treat owing to its non-specific clinical features and often atypical cerebrospinal fluid changes. Patients who present with focal neurologic signs, cough, low-grade fever and illness duration of more than 5 days, have intracalvarial abnormalities, and do not meet Thwaites' criterion findings should be diagnosed using computed tomography or magnetic resonan

Each year, there are more than eight million new cases of tuberculosis and 1.3 million deaths. There is a renewed interest in extrapulmonary forms of tuberculosis as its relative frequency increases. Among extrapulmonary organs, pleura and lymph nodes are the most common. Their diagnosis is often difficult and is based on clinical, radiological, bacteriological and histological findings. Extrapulmonary lesions are paucibacillary and samplings, in most cases, difficult to obtain, so diagnosis is often simply presumptive. Nucleic acid amplification tests, which are fast and specific, have greatl

BACKGROUND: Strains of Escherichia coli cause a wide variety of intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases in both humans and animals, and are also often found in healthy individuals or the environment. Broadly, a strong phylogenetic relationship exists that distinguishes most E. coli causing intestinal disease from those that cause extra-intestinal disease, however, isolates within a recently described subclass of Extra-Intestinal Pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), termed endometrial pathogenic E. coli, tend to be phylogenetically distant from the vast majority of characterised ExPECs, and more closel

In humans, Salmonella most often causes self-limiting gastroenteritis, but more severe symptoms such as sepsis and meningitis can also occur and can sometimes have a fatal outcome. Even if the meningitis is not fatal, sequelae such as epilepsy, cranial nerve palsies, and hydrocephalus can occur. In the United States, it has been estimated that approximately 6% of the human cases of salmonellosis can be attributed to contact with reptiles or amphibians. The infection may take place by direct contact between reptile and human or indirectly via contact with an environment contaminated with Salmon

BACKGROUND: Primary care clinicians will see a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes in adult patients, and the diagnosis and management of an initial presentation of type 1 diabetes can pose challenges to clinicians who see it less frequently. Symptoms of hyperglycemia and risk of ketoacidosis may be missed. Further, endocrine autoimmune disease can run together in patients and families.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old Caucasian female with history of pituitary adenoma and Graves' disease with history of thyroid ablation presented in the outpatient setting due to hand tingling of her right mi

UNLABELLED: Diabetes is a long-lasting condition of glucose metabolism caused by abnormalities in insulin secretion and effectiveness. Type 2 diabetes with persistent hyperglycemia, managed with various hypoglycemic medications, has severe adverse effects and can harm vital organs. Anti-diabetic medication from Indian traditional medicinal plants has shown no such side effects. The current study aimed to explore and assess the antidiabetic potential of terpenoid phytocompounds from two types of Gymnema sylvestre extracts. The current study utilized various analytical methods to validate anti-d

Streptococcus pyogenes group A Streptococcus (GAS) is the most common cause of bacterial throat infections, and can cause mild to severe skin and soft tissue infections, including impetigo, erysipelas, necrotizing fasciitis, as well as systemic and fatal infections including septicaemia and meningitis. Estimated annual incidence for invasive group A streptococcal infection (iGAS) in industrialised countries is approximately three per 100,000 per year. Typing is currently used in England and Wales to monitor bacterial strains of S. pyogenes causing invasive infections and those isolated from pa

Uni- or bilateral ejaculatory duct obstruction (EDO) is a rare but correctable cause of infertility, chronic pelvic pain and postejaculatory pain. EDO is a congenital or acquired condition, it is the underlying cause of infertility in approximately 5% of infertile men. If acquired, the etiology often remains unresolved, but prostatitis or urethritis with post-inflammatory adhesion of the duct walls seems to be a common underlying pathomechanism.Although a certain constellation of physicochemical semen parameters may lead to correct diagnosis, EDO often resembles a diagnosis by exclusion. UNLABELLED: Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a leading bacterial pathogen causing pneumonia, meningitis, septicemia, and post-viral respiratory infections such as COVID-19. Despite licensed vaccines, efficacy is limited by serotype dependency, cost, and restricted coverage, highlighting the need for broad-spectrum alternatives. Protein-based vaccines with conserved antigens represent a promising strategy. This study aimed to design and evaluate an efficient peptide-based vaccine against pneumococcal virulence factors using immunoinformatics tools. Two major pneumococcal surface proteins were s

BACKGROUND: Assessing the quality of life (QOL) of children with early onset scoliosis (EOS) has been discussed recently. Therefore, the study aimed to apply and correlate the 24-item Early Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) with the 50-item Childhood Health Questionnaire (CHQ-PF50) to find predictive factors impacting QOL.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study involving a population of caregivers of patients with EOS. The sample consisted of 72 patients. Two research assistants applied the Portuguese version of the EOSQ-24 and CHQ-PF50 in 3 treatment centers. The EOSQ-24 assesses the subjectiv

Atherosclerosis, the hardening of arteries under oxidative stress is related to oxidative changes of low density lipoproteins (LDL). The antioxidants prevent the formation of oxidized LDL during atherogenesis. Perhaps more than one mechanism is involved in the atherosclerosis disease where LDL is oxidized in all the cells of arterial wall during the development of this disease. The oxidation of LDL produces lipid peroxidation products such as isoprostans from arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, oxysterols from cholesterol, hydroxyl fatty acids, lipid peroxides and aldehyde

BACKGROUND: Between 75 and 89% of residents living in long-term care facilities have limited mobility. Nurses as well as other licensed and unlicensed personnel directly involved in resident care are in a key position to promote and maintain the mobility of care-dependent persons. This requires a certain level of competence. Kinaesthetics is a training concept used to increase nursing staff's interaction and movement support skills for assisting care-dependent persons in their daily activities. This study aims to develop and test an observation instrument for assessing nursing staff's competen

Population growth, even if coupled to economic growth, and resources, were already on a collision course, especially in Africa. The 2019 United Nations World Water Development Report provided a dramatic status of world water, however without questioning the main drivers of an imminent water crisis, that were unbounded, unequal, economic, and population growth, within the context of reducing resources in a finite world. Despite the report was a small step forward in awareness, still, it was not proposing satisfactory remedies. With business-as-usual, without acting on the drivers of water scarc

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic fistulas affect a significant number of patients globally, with a relatively low prevalence in the United States. Virtual education offers an effective, scalable solution to bridge this educational gap and lead to a deeper understanding of more common conditions, such as urinary and fecal incontinence.
METHODS: We developed two virtual cases on rectovaginal and vesicovaginal/ureterovaginal fistulas to enhance medical students' exposure, knowledge, and confidence regarding assessment of pelvic fistulas. The cases could be completed in approximately 30 minutes, asynchronous

BACKGROUND: Neurobrucellosis (NB) is a rare, but important complication of brucellosis. The clinical features vary greatly and, in general, tend to be chronic. Many laboratory procedures are usually employed in the diagnosis of NB. Even though the culture method is the gold standard, growth rate is low and time consuming. Thus the rate of sequelae and mortality increase in case of a delay in treatment. Therefore it is necessary to perform serological tests in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in suspected patients. In this study we aim to evaluate clinical features, diagnosis, and treat

Various degrees of sensory neural hearing loss can be seen in the progression of some hereditary periodic fever syndromes. Otoacoustic emission testing can help to establish the inner ear involvement at an early period of a periodic fever with a risk of hearing loss (Abdul Kadir et al. in J Int Adv Otol 9(2.79):08-11, 2014). Sensorineural hearing loss is the common most complication of bacterial meningitis in childhood (Richardson in Pediatrics 102(6):1364-1368, 1998). When present from birth, or acquired in the pre-school years, hearing loss of any degree, even mild hearing loss, interferes w
