SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common benign intracranial neoplasms with a slow growth presented as the intracranial lesion. These tumors are without any symptoms for a long time. At the time of diagnosis it is frequently an asymptomatic tumor. In that case the therapist may well suggest a wait-and-see strategy. The therapy of meningiomas focuses firstly on the microsurgical treatment. Volume reduction can be achieved immediately after treatment. Stereotactic radiosurgery is an important non-invasive treatment option for recurrent tumors or meningiomas with partial resection.

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

PURPOSE: Atypical meningiomas have higher recurrence and mortality than benign variants, and age may influence treatment decisions and outcomes. We evaluated associations between age, treatment modality, and survival in patients with atypical meningioma.
METHODS: Adults with histologically confirmed intracranial atypical meningioma were identified from the 2000-2021 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Multivariable Cox regression assessed overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS), and logistic regression evaluated predictors of gross total resection (GTR) vers

Liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) is a lipid-associated formulation of the broad-spectrum polyene antifungal agent amphotericin B. It is active against clinically relevant yeasts and moulds, including Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. and filamentous moulds such as Zygomycetes, and is approved for the treatment of invasive fungal infections in many countries worldwide. It was developed to improve the tolerability profile of amphotericin B deoxycholate, which was for many decades considered the gold standard of antifungal treatment, despite being associated with infusion-related events and nephr

Primary meningeal melanocytic tumors (PMMTs) are rare neoplasms currently stratified by the World Health Organization (WHO) into three grades of malignancy based exclusively on histopathological criteria, while the prognostic significance of molecular alterations remains poorly defined. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic relevance of histopathological and molecular features in PMMTs and to assess the diagnostic utility of immunohistochemical and molecular markers for distinguishing PMMTs from malignant melanotic nerve sheath tumors (MMNSTs). Thirty-six primary central nervous syste

Meningiomas are predominantly benign intracranial neoplasms, with extracranial distant metastasis occurring in fewer than 1% of all patients; pulmonary metastasis represents an exceedingly rare complication of meningioma progression and recurrence. We describe a 44-year-old male patient with sequentially recurrent intracranial meningioma exhibiting dynamic histopathological grade evolution combined with synchronous bilateral pulmonary metastatic lesions, followed for an unprecedented 18 clinical years. Across follow-up, the patient received four open craniotomies, two sessions of stereotactic

Meningioma biology has been substantially clarified by recent omics-based studies, which have identified recurrent mutations, copy-number alterations, and distinct molecular subgroups. However, although these approaches have provided a valuable framework, they are inherently limited in their ability to establish direct causal relationships. The mechanistic studies are therefore indispensable for translating these molecular observations into biological understanding. Nevertheless, the mechanistic literature has often evolved in a fragmented manner, with individual pathways and model systems stu

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Meningiomas, the most common primary intracranial neoplasms, account for more than one-third of primary CNS tumors. While traditionally viewed as benign, meningiomas can be associated with considerable morbidity, and specific meningioma subgroups display more aggressive behavior with higher recurrence rates. The risk stratification for recurrence has been primarily associated with the World Health Organization (WHO) histopathologic grade and extent of resection. However, a growing body of literature has highlighted the value of molecular characteristics in assessing recurrence risk. While main

INTRODUCTION: Primary pulmonary meningioma is a rare disease. There have been only a little over 50 cases of primary pulmonary meningioma (PPM) reported in previous literature. The pathogenesis of PPM is still unclear. We report a case of PPM cured by thoracoscopic right middle lobe wedge resection and systematically review previously reported cases in previous literature.
CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old male patient was found to have a nodule in the right middle lobe of about 1.8 cm in diameter on a chest-enhanced CT scan performed more than 7 years ago. A re-examination in 2023 found the subpleu

We report a rare case of rhabdoid meningioma (RM) originating from the optic nerve in a 57-year-old female. The tumor exhibited rhabdoid or epithelioid histology and harbored BAP1 inactivation mutations. Optic nerve meningioma typically originates from the outer meningeal cells of the optic nerve within the optic canal and is usually benign, with most cases classified as meningothelial or transitional meningiomas. This is the first reported case of RM involving the optic nerve, presenting with World Health Organization (WHO) central nervous system (CNS) grade 1 histological features but withou

BACKGROUND: Spinal meningiomas (SMs) are rare, predominantly benign tumors that account for 1.2%-12.7% of all meningiomas. While surgical resection is the primary treatment, recurrence occurs in a subset of patients, necessitating subsequent therapies such as reoperation or definitive radiation therapy (RT). This study evaluates the outcomes of definitive RT versus third surgery for recurrent World Health Organization (WHO) grade 1 SM, focusing on progression-free survival (PFS) and treatment-related toxicities.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 48 patients with third progression of WHO grad

BACKGROUND: Malignant transformation of epidermoid cysts (ECs) into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is extremely rare, with associated leptomeningeal carcinomatosis being much less likely. Malignant transformation of ECs has a poor prognosis with a median overall survival of 10 months following transformation.
OBSERVATIONS: A 59-year-old male with a history of a subtotally resected posterior fossa EC presented with worsening symptoms 14 years following the initial subtotal resection. Imaging showed obstructive hydrocephalus and extensive leptomeningeal carcinomatosis. Laboratory workup confirme

Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma (DIG) is a rare intracranial benign tumor occurring in infants under 2 years of age. It has good biological and behavioral characteristics and occasionally has malignant characteristics, such as multiple intracranial lesions, postoperative progression or recurrence, meningeal diffusion, and metastasis. We present a non-infant with DIG who underwent tumor progression. A 16-year-old girl presented with DIG in the cerebral cistern and underwent subtotal resection. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain 2 years later revealed that the area of abnormal

Atypical meningiomas display heterogeneous clinical outcomes, necessitating prognostic markers to identify cases that would benefit of adjuvant treatment. This study investigated the prognostic value of chromosome 1p deletion, assessed by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), in a cohort of 98 primary atypical meningiomas. The accuracy of FISH was validated by comparison with next-generation sequencing (NGS) results. Chromosome 1p deletion was significantly associated with parafalcine/tentorial location, high mitotic index, recurrence, and shorter recurrence-free survival (RFS). Multivaria

OBJECTIVE: Spinal meningiomas (SMs) are less frequently diagnosed than intracranial meningiomas. While recent advancements in tumor biology have identified key driver genes in SMs through targeted sequencing, few studies have yet to characterize the genomic profiles of these tumors together with their methylation signatures. In this study, we present our institutional experience of a combined genomic and epigenetic analysis of 8 thoracic SMs.
METHODS: We performed targeted genomic sequencing and DNA methylation profiling on 8 primary SMs. We further collected relevant clinical information and

Meningiomas are the most common primary central nervous system tumors in adults. Although the majority of meningiomas are benign, certain clinical and histopathological factors are associated with an increased risk of tumor progression and recurrence. Advances in genomic characterization of brain tumors have revealed that certain molecular characteristics such as TERT promoter mutation and chromosomal losses on 1p, 6p/q, 9p, 10p/q, 14q, and 18p/q as genomic markers are associated with aggressive behavior. However, the significance of chromosomal polysomies in meningiomas is not clear. We perfo

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial neoplasms, with highly variable patient outcomes. While most meningiomas are benign, a significant subset recurs postoperatively, presenting substantial treatment challenges. BAP1 gene inactivation has been suggested as a marker for aggressive meningiomas, although its precise molecular and clinical roles remain poorly understood.
METHODS: To comprehensively investigate BAP1-altered meningiomas, we used six meningiomas with known BAP1 alterations as a discovery set. Genome-wide DNA methylation profiling of these samples, along 1
