Clinicopathological characteristics of secondary trigeminal neuralgia due to cerebellopontine angle tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors are a common cause of secondary trigeminal neuralgia (TN), characterized by their concealed location, slow progression, and difficulty in early detection. This study aims to explore the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with secondary TN due to CPA tumors to enhance understanding and management of secondary TN. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data and pathological results of 116 patients with CPA tumor-related TN treated at Xiangya Hospital of Central South University from January 1, 2017 to December 31,

[Defining the Role of Radiotherapy in Meningioma Treatment].

The debate regarding the role and clinical impact of radiotherapy for meningiomas remains underdeveloped due to insufficient evidence. However, following recent revisions in the WHO classification and the integration of molecular diagnostics, there has been a substantial shift in the stratification of recurrence risks. Nevertheless, the specific circumstances under which radiotherapy proves crucial remain unclear. As risk stratification becomes more refined, the effectiveness of radiotherapy in treating high-risk meningiomas continues to be a contentious issue. Concurrently, there is vigorous

Impact of Fractionation Regimen on Local Control Following Frameless Linear Accelerator-Based Image-Guided Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy for Intracranial Meningioma.

OBJECTIVE: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an established treatment for intracranial meningioma, yet this approach is often precluded by tumor size or proximity to critical structures. Fractionated radiotherapy (RT) may be employed to address these limitations. We performed a comparison of local control (LC) outcomes between 3 stereotactic techniques. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 543 consecutive patients with 613 histologically-proven World Health Organization grade I or radiographically-defined benign intracranial meningioma treated with SRS (median dose: 1250 cGy) (n

Immunohistochemical Profile of p62/SQSTM1/Sequestosome-1 in Human Low- and High-Grade Intracranial Meningiomas.

Among autophagic-related proteins, p62/SQSTM1/Sequestosome-1 represents a relevant actor in cellular proliferation and neoplastic growth. Although, recently, p62 expression has been analyzed in different neurodegenerative and glial neoplastic diseases, no available information have been reported in meningiomas, which have an high epidemiological relevance being the second most common category of intracranial tumors after gliomas. Generally meningiomas have a benign behavior, but their recurrence is not uncommon mainly when atypical or anaplastic varieties occur. However, intranuclear vacuoles

"Evaluating surgical approaches for Rathke's cleft cysts and sellar meningiomas: factors influencing treatment of choice".

This study reviews recent progress in the surgical treatment of Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs) and Sellar region meningiomas, based on findings from three key studies. RCCs are benign, fluid-filled remnants from pituitary gland development that are usually asymptomatic and found by chance. However, surgical intervention is needed when they become symptomatic or increase in size. Research by Stefan Linsler et al. and others examines various surgical methods, including transcranial keyhole and transsphenoidal techniques for RCCs, and endoscopic endonasal and supraorbital keyhole approaches for Sell

Metabolic profiling of atypical meningioma and recurrent meningioma: a comparative analysis with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

OBJECTIVE: Meningiomas are predominantly benign, but some cases exhibit recurrent growth after surgery and undergo malignant transformation to WHO grade 2 or grade 3. Despite progress in genetic analyses, advancements in metabolomic analysis remain less established. Herein, the authors investigated metabolic activity differences between WHO grade 1 meningiomas and WHO grade 2 or 3 meningiomas by noninvasively using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS), aiming to preoperatively estimate malignancy. They also reviewed the literature to elucidate this aspect of meningioma research. ME

Filum terminale infected epidermoid cysts in pediatric age group; A case series.

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts are rare and account for only 1 % of primary spinal tumors. It's due to inclusion of ectodermal tissue during the third and fourth weeks of gestation. Infected epidermoid cysts are exceedingly rare with very few reports in literature. The clinical presentations include radicular symptoms, motor weakness, sphincteric disturbance, and repeated chemical meningitis. Surgery of this kind of tumor remained a challenge and of a considerable recurrence rate. METHODS: This is a retrospective study reviewing the records of six children who were treated for filum terminale i

Intracranial angioleiomyoma mimicking meningioma: an uncommon tumor with favorable outcome and frequent GJA4 mutation.

Intracranial angioleiomyoma (IALM) is a rare neoplasm mimicking meningioma. We aimed to explore the clinical and molecular characteristics of IALMs. We included 40 patients with IALMs who had tumor resection at our center from 2009 to 2022. Clinicopathological and radiological characteristics were extracted and analyzed thoroughly. GJA4 mutation status was detected and correlated with clinical characteristics. IALMs accounted for about 10% of all angioleiomyoma and had a significant male predominance compared to extracranial angioleiomyoma (p=0.04). However, there was no age difference between

Benefits of preoperative embolization before resection of a giant convexity meningioma: a case report.

Meningiomas are typically benign and asymptomatic, but complicated or symptomatic cases may necessitate immediate intervention. Specifically, a giant meningioma with high vascularization poses a surgical challenge due to increased risk. In this report, a case of a giant meningioma managed with preoperative embolization (POE) before surgery was presented. A 24-year-old woman presented with severe bilateral visual disturbances and chronic headaches. Upon examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a giant meningioma measuring 97 mm in maximum diameter. Subsequent angiography indicated a

Establishment of a novel benign meningioma cell line spontaneously immortalized under hypoxic conditions.

Meningiomas are the most frequent brain tumors, typically benign and curable by surgery. However, some patients experience repeated recurrences from residual tumors. To address such cases, the development of novel therapeutic options is crucial. For this purpose, the availability of cell lines that possess the characteristics of benign meningiomas is essential. Here, we established a benign meningioma cell line under 3% O2 hypoxic conditions without the induction of immortalization genes. This cell line, named TKB-MEN2, has been stably grown for over two years with more than 20 passages. There

The prognostic value of H3 K27me3 in meningiomas: A review on current evidence and methodological challenges.

Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial neoplasms. Although they mostly exhibit a benign course, some cases recur after surgery and show high morbidity and mortality rates. In addition to currently established prognostic factors, such as the extent of surgical resection and tumor grade assessed according to World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, the prognostic significance of the immunohistochemical loss of Histone 3 trimethylation in Lysine 27 (H3 K27me3) has emerged in meningiomas. This review examined original studies that analyzed the immunohistochemical expression of H3 K2

Transdural location as a predictor of recurrence in spinal cord meningiomas.

Spinal cord meningiomas are typically benign, rare tumors that pose clinical challenges owing to their location and potential for spinal cord compression. This study aimed to assess the radiological features of spinal cord meningiomas and the key factors associated with their recurrence. We conducted a retrospective, single-institution study on 67 patients with pathologically confirmed spinal cord meningiomas who were surgically treated between January 2016 and December 2023. Radiological features, such as tumor size, en plaque growth, tumor signal intensity, and anatomical location, were asse

Protein expression of CD44 in patients with meningioma tumors: association with clinicopathological parameters and survival.

OBJECTIVE: Meningiomas are a molecularly ill-defined heterogeneous group of indolent intracranial tumors. Though, WHO grade 1 tumors are histologically benign, sometimes they transform into malignant and may be recurrent which remains always challenging to clinicians. Therefore, the current study sought to discover the clinical relevance of CD44 in meningioma patients. METHOD: Protein expression of CD44 was investigated using immunohistochemistry in a total of 70 meningioma patients. Immunoscore performed using modified H-score, CD44 expression correlated with clinicopathological parameters a

Unravelling Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease: A Unique Presentation of Recurrent Aseptic Meningitis in a District Hospital Setting.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, self-limiting, and ultimately benign condition characterised by localised lymphadenopathy. The association of KFD with aseptic meningitis is even more uncommon. We report a case of KFD accompanied by aseptic meningitis in a 31-year-old male who initially presented with lethargy, night sweats, axillary lymphadenopathy, and oral ulcers. Initial differential diagnoses included Lyme disease and lymphoma, which were subsequently ruled out. The patient presented again 10 days later with a severe headache. Neurological examination revealed negative Kernig and

Prognostic Impact of Poor Differentiation of Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Treatment Naïve Node-Negative Early Oral Cancers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chemotherapy treatment of childhood cancer may impair gonadal function, which may be manifested only in adulthood as permanent sterility. Detection of gonadal dysfunction in prepubertal children has been hampered by the absence of a sensitive marker. Inhibin B is secreted by small antral follicles and Sertoli cells in females and males, respectively, and may be a marker of gonadal function in prepubertal children. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate inhibin B in relation to sensitive measurements of gonadotrophins as markers of the early gonadotoxic effects of

Glioblastoma in the contralateral cerebral hemisphere with previous surgery for meningioma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Meningioma and glioblastoma (GBM) are 2 common intracranial tumors with different pathophysiologies and prognoses. It is rare for these 2 kinds of tumors to occur in the same patient. Most of the similar cases reported in the literature have been treated with radiotherapy, while cases without radiotherapy are rare. In particular, GBM in the contralateral cerebral hemisphere after resection of meningioma has not been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of a 66-years-old man with GBM in the right temporal lobe after previous resection of a benign meningioma of the left fron
