Meningiomas develop from meningothelial cells and approximately account for more than 30 percent of central nervous system (CNS) tumors. They can occur anywhere in the dura, most often intracranially and at dural reflection sites. Half of the cases are usually at parasagittal/falcine and convexity locations; other common sites are sphenoid ridge, suprasellar, posterior fossa, and olfactory groove. The female-to-male ratio is approximately 2 or 3-1, and the median age at diagnosis is 65 years. Meningiomas are generally extremely slow-growing tumors; many are asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic at

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumor. While the majority of meningiomas are benign, rarely they can metastasize extracranially. There is a need for a more comprehensive review of these patients to improve our understanding of this rare phenomenon and its prevalence globally. Here we describe our institution's experience of patients presenting with metastatic meningiomas. We further perform a systematic review of the existing literature to explore common features of this rare manifestation of meningioma and review the efficacy of current treatments.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the controversy surrounding brain invasion (BI) as the sole indicator used to diagnose atypical meningioma, this criterion was still incorporated in the 2021 WHO classification scheme. In this study, the authors investigated the reproducibility of this prognostic effect and the impact of BI on the prognosis in otherwise benign meningioma (benign meningioma with BI).
METHODS: Patients (n = 1006) with a pathological diagnosis of benign or atypical meningioma according to the latest WHO classification criteria were enrolled in this study. In patients with atypical meningioma,

INTRODUCTION: Aseptic meningitis was recently reported and recognized as a novel phenotype of Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOG-AD). However, the frequency and clinical features of this specific subtype remain unclear.
METHODS: We reported sixteen MOG-AD cases with aseptic meningitis from June 2018 to June 2022. Moreover, systematic literature of 17 reported cases was conducted.
RESULTS: Upon reviewing the records of 91 patients diagnosed with MOG-AD in our center, we identified 16 patients (17.6%; 9 men and 7 women) with aseptic meningitis-like MOG-AD. The

OBJECTIVE: Meningiomas can lead to significant morbidity and mortality and have recurrence potential. While previous studies have focused on calculating recurrence risk, the precise location of the recurrence has not been delineated. This study aimed to investigate the spatial clustering pattern of recurrence relative to the original surgical bed for surgically treated Simpson Grade I-III, WHO Grade 1 meningiomas.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with grade 1 meningiomas and treated with surgical resection with subsequent recurrence were reviewed. Patient demographics, clinical outcomes, and radio

We describe the first case of regression of a white epidermoid cyst in a child. White epidermoid cysts are rare benign lesions, particularly in pediatric cases. Typically, these cysts need surgical resection. However, we report the case of a 3-year-old child with recurrent aseptic meningitis, in whom CT scan and MRI revealed a white epidermoid cyst in the pre-bulbar cistern. Surprisingly, over a 5-year follow-up period, the cyst showed dramatic regression without any symptoms. This case sheds light on the potential for spontaneous regression of white epidermoid cysts in children, challenging t

Meningiomas account for approximately one third of all primary intracranial tumors. Arising from the cells of the arachnoid mater, these neoplasms are found along meningeal surfaces within the calvarium and spinal canal. Many are discovered incidentally, and most are idiopathic, although risk factors associated with meningioma development include age, sex, prior radiation exposure, and familial genetic diseases. The World Health Organization grading system is based on histologic criteria, and are as follows: grade 1 meningiomas, a benign subtype; grade 2 meningiomas, which are of intermediatel

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas, although benign, often require complete resection due to their tendency for recurrence. However, dural reconstruction poses significant challenges, especially in the case of ventral meningiomas. While some reports have highlighted the usefulness of dural reconstruction using an artificial dura mater, no studies have yet confirmed dural canal enlargement through MRI post-surgically. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Fenestrated Durotomy with Oversized Graft (FDOG) technique in cases of meningiomas and other intradural extramedullary tumors and evaluate

Sarcoidosis is an immune-mediated disease that can involve multiple systems. Sarcoidosis of the nervous system or neurosarcoidosis may present as cranial mononeuropathy, hypothalamic involvement, aseptic meningitis, granulomatous inflammation in the brain parenchyma or spinal cord, peripheral neuropathy, and, in rare cases, as myopathy and benign intracranial hypertension. The most common cranial nerve involvement is the facial nerve, which can present as unilateral or bilateral facial nerve palsy, often with recurrent episodes. Involvement of other cranial nerves such as the second and eighth

In general, human meningiomas grow slowly and have a favourable prognosis; however, some are prone to recur despite their benign histology. Therefore, knowledge of their tumour biology is essential to determine objective biomarkers that can identify cases with an increased risk for recurrence and to generate effective treatment options. Thus, studies on the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family, comprising ErbB1/EGFR, ErbB2/HER2, ErbB3/HER3 and ErbB4/HER4, are important. We have recently published papers on the expression of each of these receptor proteins in human meningiomas. The pr

OBJECTIVE: Spinal meningiomas are one of the most common primary intradural tumors of the adult spine. Spinal meningiomas typically have a benign course with low rates of recurrence. Recent advances in genomic profiling have provided valuable information on meningioma biology and natural history, but these studies have focused primarily on cranial meningiomas. Chromosomal copy number analysis of meningiomas has been shown to be a valuable molecular profiling technique for distinguishing benign from aggressive tumors. The Integrated Grade for Meningioma is a novel grading scheme that uses mitot

A collision tumor complex is composed of at least two different tumors, benign or malignant, with at least two different histopathological features located adjacent to each other in the exact anatomical localization. Pathologies such as meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, gliomas, and schwannomas may be involved in a collision tumor complex. However, co-occurrence of pituitary adenomas and meningiomas as skull base collision tumors is rare. Here, we present a 65-year-old male patient who presented with olfactory groove meningioma and non-functioning pituitary adenoma as a collision tumor. The pat

Meningiomas are common, benign tumors found in the dural layers of the central nervous system (CNS) that are often found incidentally. 18F-fluciclovine is an amino acid radiotracer that is used to monitor the recurrence of prostate cancer due to its high uptake in prostate cancer cells. This case report outlines a patient with a retinoblastoma tumor suppressor gene (RB1) mutation and prostate cancer metastasis to the bone incidentally noted to have an enhancing, extra-axial mass on a screening MRI. On prior scans, the mass displayed increased 18F-fluciclovine uptake. Because prostate cancer ca

Combined malonic and methylmalonic aciduria is a rare genetic disorder caused by ACSF3 biallelic variants that results in impaired protein and fat metabolism and the accumulation of malonic and methylmalonic acids. A 52-day-old infant with a fever and a history of possible meningitis during the neonatal period was hospitalized. Multiple lesions of necrotizing lymphadenitis with abscesses in the left inguinal area were treated by incision and drainage along with appropriate antibiotic therapy, which revealed a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection. At 6 months of age, the patien

Meningiomas are the most frequent nonmalignant tumors of the central nervous system (CNS). Despite their benign nature and slow-growing pattern, if not diagnosed early, these tumors may reach relatively large sizes causing significant morbidity and mortality. Some variants are located in hard-to-access locations, compressing critical neurovascular structures, and making the surgical management even more challenging. Although most meningiomas have a good long-term prognosis after treatment, there are still controversies over their management in a subset of cases. While surgery is the first-line

Meningeal melanocytomas of the central nervous system, although typically benign, rarely undergo malignant transformations. A 46-year-old man presented with headache and nausea 4 years after gross total resection of a craniovertebral junction meningeal melanocytoma at another hospital. The initial clinical course was previously reported.1) Computed tomography revealed the presence of multiple intracranial mass lesions. Furthermore, magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple intracranial lesions and meningeal dissemination. A biopsy was performed for a circumflex lesion located in the right fro

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas, the most prevalent benign intracranial neoplasms, have been studied extensively for many years, but significant problems remain. To date, there is a scarcity of detailed studies elucidating the hotspots and future directions of meningiomas research.
METHODS: A comprehensive search and screening strategy was used to collect relevant studies published between 2011 and 2021 in the Web of Science Core Collection database. Thorough and systematic coauthorship and co-occurrence keyword maps were generated, and tables of statistics summarizing countries, organizations, autho

INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial ventriculitis is a severe infection that habitually plagues neurological intensive care units. It is usually associated with external ventricular drains. Unfortunately, classic cerebral spinal fluid parameters are less specific and sensitive compared to community acquired meningitis. This is in part secondary to indolent bacteria commonly infecting external ventricular drains leading to ventriculitis.
CASE REPORT: Herein, a rare case of Sphingomonas paucimobilis ventriculitis in an immunocompetent host is reported. The patient had classic symptoms of ventriculitis, bu

INTRODUCTION: Meningiomas are usually slow-growing tumours, constituting about one third of all primary intracranial tumours. They occur more frequently in women. Clinical manifestation of meningiomas depends on their location, tumour size and growth rate. In most cases, surgical treatment is the procedure of choice. The success of this treatment is, however, associated with the radicality of the resection. Radiotherapy represents an additional or alternative treatment modality. Gamma knife surgery is another notable treatment method, especially in small and/or slow-growing tumours in eloquent
