Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an uncommon inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, manifesting clinically as optic neuritis, myelitis, and certain brain and brainstem syndromes. Cases clinically diagnosed as NMOSD may include aquaporin 4 (AQP4)-antibody-seropositive autoimmune astrocytopathic disease, myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-antibody-seropositive inflammatory demyelinating disease, and double-seronegative disease. AQP4-antibody disease has a high female-to-male ratio (up to 9:1), and its mean age at onset of ~40 years is later than that seen in

INTRODUCTION: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody disease is a rare and practically new entity in medicine. In developing countries, there are still important limitations for the detection of anti-MOG antibodies by cell-based assay, so knowing the clinical characteristics of the different phenotypes and their differences with other demyelinating pathologies of the central nervous system is essential in order to make a proper diagnostic and therapeutic approach of the patients.
AIM: To present an update regarding the clinical characteristics of the disease spectrum, being the fi

In the past few years, acquired demyelinating syndromes of the central nervous system associated with antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) have evolved into a new inflammatory disease entity distinct from neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders or multiple sclerosis. The meticulous clinical description of patients with MOG IgG antibodies (MOG-IgG) has been achieved by development and use of highly specific cell-based assays. MOG-IgG associated disorders comprise a wide spectrum of syndromes ranging from acute disseminated encephalomyelitis predominantly in children to o

Imaging plays a crucial role in differentiating the spectrum of paediatric acquired demyelinating syndromes (ADS), which apart from myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody associated disorders (MOGAD) includes paediatric multiple sclerosis (MS), aquaporin-4 antibody neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and unclassified patients with both monophasic and relapsing ADS. In contrast to the imaging characteristics of children with MS, children with MOGAD present with diverse imaging patterns which correlate with the main demyelinating phenotypes as well as age at presentation. Over the past few years, increasing interest in the role of autoantibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-abs) as a new candidate biomarker in demyelinating central nervous system diseases has arisen. MOG-abs have now consistently been identified in a variety of demyelinating syndromes, with a predominance in paediatric patients. The clinical spectrum of these MOG-ab-associated disorders (MOGAD) is still expanding and differs between paediatric and adult patients. This first part of the Paediatric European Collaborative Consensus emphasises the diversity in clinical phenotype

Optic neuritis (ON) is a frequent manifestation of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody-mediated neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated encephalomyelitis (MOG-EM; also termed MOG antibody-associated disorders, MOGAD). The past few years have seen major advances in the diagnosis and treatment of these two relatively new entities: international diagnostic criteria for NMOSD and MOG-EM have been proposed, improved antibody assays developed, and consensus recommendations on the indications and methodology of serological testing published.

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-associated disease (MOGAD) is a rare, antibody-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) with various phenotypes starting from optic neuritis, via transverse myelitis to acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and cortical encephalitis. Even though sometimes the clinical picture of this condition is similar to the presentation of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), most experts consider MOGAD as a distinct entity with different immune system pathology. MOG is a molecule detected on the outer membr

INTRODUCTION: The past two decades have been marked by three epidemics linked to emerging coronaviruses. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the existence of neurological manifestations associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and raised the question of the neuropathogenicity of coronaviruses. The aim of this review was to summarize the current data about neurological manifestations and diseases linked to human coronaviruses.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Articles have been identified by searches of PubMed and Google scholar up to September 25, 2020, using a combination of coronavirus and neurology search

BACKGROUND: New-generation cell-based assays have demonstrated a robust association of serum autoantibodies to full-length human myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-IgG) with (mostly recurrent) optic neuritis, myelitis, and brainstem encephalitis, as well as with neuromyelitis optica (NMO)-like or acute-disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)-like presentations. However, only limited data are yet available on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings in MOG-IgG-associated encephalomyelitis (MOG-EM; also termed MOG antibody-associated disease, MOGAD).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global health crisis of our time. The disease arises from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors on host cells for its internalization. COVID-19 has a wide range of respiratory symptoms from mild to severe and affects several other organs, increasing the complexity of the treatment. There is accumulating evidence to suggest that SARS-CoV-2 can target the nervous system. In this review, we provide an account of the COVID-19 central nervous syst

The Northeast of Brazil has experienced a triple epidemic, with the simultaneous circulation of dengue virus (DENV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV), which may have contributed to the observed increase across this region of atypical forms of disease and deaths. In view of this fact, non-congenital neurological disorders related to arboviruses were compared with other etiologies, mortality and survival rates of patients admitted to referral neurology hospitals in Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil, from 2015 to 2018. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples were collected and teste

Antecedent viral infection may contribute to increased susceptibility to several neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Variation in clinical presentations of these diseases is often associated with gender, genetic background, or a combination of these and other factors. The complicated etiologies of these virally influenced diseases are difficult to study in conventional laboratory mouse models, which display a very limited number of phenotypes. We have used the genetically and phenotypically diverse Collaborative Cross mouse panel to examine complex neurol

In the past decade, different members of the genus Mamastrovirus have been associated with outbreaks of neurologic disease in humans, cattle, sheep, mink, and, most recently, porcine astrovirus 3 (PoAstV3) in swine. We performed a retrospective analysis of 50 cases of porcine neurologic disease of undetermined cause but with microscopic lesions compatible with a viral encephalomyelitis to better understand the role and pathogenesis of PoAstV3 infection. Nucleic acid was extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue for reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reactio

Increasing recognition of the role of B cells in the adaptive immune response makes B cells an important therapeutic target in autoimmunity. Numerous current and developmental immunotherapies target B cells for elimination through recognition of cell-surface proteins expressed specifically on B cells, in particular CD19 and CD20. Similarities and differences in the function and expression of these two molecules predict some shared, and some distinct, pharmacological effects of agents targeting CD19 versus CD20, potentially leading to differences in the clinical safety and efficacy of such agen

Zika virus (ZIKV) disease is a vector-borne infectious disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Recently, ZIKV has caused outbreaks in most American countries. Areas covered: Publications about neurological complications of ZIKV infection retrieved from pubmed searchers were reviewed, and reference lists and relevant articles from review articles were also examined. Vertical/intrauterine transmission leads to congenital infection and causes microcephaly and congenital ZIKV syndrome. ZIKV preferentially infects human neural progenitor cells and triggers cell apoptosis. ZIKV RNA has been identif

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) are detected in the serum of some patients with demyelinating diseases. These patients are known to show repeated clinical episodes of inflammatory demyelinating attacks in the central nervous system. Although the associated pathogenicity and mechanism of inflammatory demyelination remains inconclusive, it is known that patients with MOG-IgG antibodies have a different clinical spectrum from those with other demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. Based on our database of 85 MOG-IgG positive (+) cas
