Post-polio syndrome is a condition characterized by increased muscle weakness, atrophy, fatigue and pain developing several years after the acute polio event. We describe a 52-year-old patient who experienced post-polio syndrome; he had contracted acute paralytic poliomyelitis at 12 months of age, shortly after the third dose of Salk polio vaccine.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for falling among individuals aging with multiple sclerosis (MS), muscular dystrophy (MD), postpolio syndrome (PPS), and spinal cord injury (SCI).
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey data from 2009 to 2010 were analyzed. We used forward logistic regression models to examine whether risk factors such as age, sex, mobility level, years since diagnosis, vision, balance, weakness, number of comorbid conditions, and physical activity could distinguish participants who reported falling from those who did not.
SETTING: Surveys were mailed to c

Postpoliomyelitis syndrome is characterized by a sudden or progressive loss of muscle strength, muscle atrophy, muscle pain, fatigue, intolerance to cold, after a period of at least 15 years from the acute polio virus infection, a period of neurological and functional stability. No therapeutic benefit of the evaluated drug agents (pyridostigmine, steroids, amantadine) has been reported. The reason for this presentation results from the fact that clinical studies have demonstrated that isokinetic and isometric muscle training can prevent the loss of muscle strength and reduce muscle fatigue. This study describes the test-retest reliability of the 6-min walk test (6MWT) and evaluates the possibility to perform the test three times on the same day in patients with postpolio syndrome (PPS). This was an intrarater test-retest reliability study. A total of 23 PPS patients (nine men, 14 women), mean age 67 years, participated in the study. The patients performed three 6MWT with a 30-min rest between each test. Borg scales were used to evaluate leg tiredness, dyspnea, and exertion before and after each test. The influence of walking aids on the outcome of the 6MWT was also evaluated. All

OBJECTIVE: To investigate in a single-center randomized control trial whether a single IVIg course improves short-term outcome in patients with postpolio syndrome (PPS).
METHODS: Fifty-one patients with PPS were randomly allocated to receive 2g/kg IVIg body weight or placebo infused over 5 consecutive days. The primary endpoint was health-related quality of life (HRQoL) limited to the physical component score (PCS) in the Short-Form-36 (SF-36). Secondary endpoints included the SF-36 mental component score (MCS), 6-minute walk test, visual analog scale, 101-numeric rating, and fatigue severity

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether strength decline in post-polio syndrome (PPS) results from excessive distal axonal degeneration of enlarged motor units.
METHODS: We assessed changes over 10 years in isometric quadriceps strength, mean motor unit action potential (MUAP) size, root mean squared (RMS) amplitude, and level of interference (LOI) in 47 patients with PPS and 12 healthy controls, using high density surface EMG. At baseline, all patients had symptomatic quadriceps dysfunction, evidenced by transmission defects on single-fibre EMG.
RESULTS: MU size and strength declined significantl

In 1875 M. Raymond described a progressive muscle wasting and weakness in 3 individuals survivors of childhood acute poliomyelitis. Jean-Martin Charcot suggested that the initial injury should let these guys neurons more sensitive to develop posterior spinal diseases and new weakness was the result of overuse of the affected muscles. In 1979, after the publication of the description given by a 57 year old patient on motor difficulties that developed after suffering of polio in childhood, there was a very significant increase of comments of other individuals with similar symptoms, reaching wedg

INTRODUCTION: In this investigation we report on the clinical utility of sensory nerve conduction studies of the medial femoral cutaneous (MFC) nerve.
METHODS: Sensory nerve conduction of the MFC nerve was assessed in 22 patients for whom this test was considered clinically necessary.
RESULTS: MFC nerve conduction was abnormal in 4 cases of MFC neuropathy. The most common cause was iatrogenic in 14 femoral neuropathy cases. MFC nerve conduction showed absent or low-amplitude sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) in 13 cases, with femoral motor nerve conduction abnormal in 5 cases. In 2 cases

OBJECTIVE: To assess the evidence for the efficacy of IV immunoglobulin (IVIg) to treat neuromuscular disorders.
METHODS: The MEDLINE, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases were searched (1966-2009). Selected articles were rated according to the American Academy of Neurology's therapeutic classification of evidence scheme; recommendations were based on the evidence level.
RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: IVIg is as efficacious as plasmapheresis and should be offered for treating Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in adults (Level A). IVIg is effective and should be offered in the long-term treatment o

The term Postpolio Syndrome (PPS) is used to describe new and late manifestations of poliomyelitis that occur later in life in polio survivors. Polio had been eradicated in the United Kingdom (UK) and most of Europe, although this is not the case in all countries. Research in this area has tended to focus upon the impact of polio and PPS on health status and functional health rather than its overall effect on people's lives. This study's two main aims were to explore the ways in which polio and PPS in the UK has affected the respondents' lives and to ascertain their views about how the quality

Hypothyroidism can have diverse neurological manifestations. Myopathy may rarely be the sole manifestation of autoimmune thyroiditis. We hereby report an atypical manifestation of severe hypothyroidism in a middle-aged woman with childhood onset of paralytic polio involving her right leg presenting with a recent onset of increased weakness in the right leg mimicking postpolio syndrome.
