The Role of Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Angiography in Reducing Anastomotic Leaks after Esophagectomy - A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis of Comparative Studies.

Anastomotic leaks (AL) after esophagectomy contribute to significant morbidity (up to 30%) and mortality (5-10%). Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography offers real-time perfusion assessment, potentially reducing AL compared to conventional methods. This meta-analysis evaluates ICG's efficacy in reducing AL after esophagectomy with gastric pull-up, focusing on cervical versus intrathoracic anastomoses. This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search of PubMed and Google Scholar from 2005 to the present was performed using MeSH terms to iden

Matrix Product Operator Algebras I: Representations of Weak Hopf Algebras and Projected Entangled Pair States.

Matrix Product Operators (MPOs) are tensor networks representing operators acting on 1D systems. They model a wide variety of situations, including communication channels with memory effects, quantum cellular automata, mixed states in 1D quantum systems, or holographic boundary models associated to 2D quantum systems. A scenario where MPOs have proven particularly useful is to represent algebras of non-trivial symmetries. Concretely, the boundary of both symmetry protected and topologically ordered phases in 2D quantum systems exhibit symmetries in the form of MPOs. In this paper, we develop a

Glial molecular signatures as a liquid biopsy marker in Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition that is characterized by the misfolding of Amyloid Precursor Protein, hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, and neuroinflammation. This leads to the formation of extracellular senile amyloid beta plaque and neurofibrillary tangles in neurons, leading to neuronal degeneration. AD is the biggest cause of dementia globally. Currently, no therapies are available for AD and early diagnosis of the disease is a challenge. The most common fluid biomarkers for AD are: p-tau181, p-tau231, p-tau217, Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio, Neurogranin (Ng), Alzheimer's-as

Aging brain lesions of a 60-year-old Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus).

A female Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) raised in a zoo died at 60 years of age. The animal showed no clinical signs besides decreased gait speed. Pathological examination revealed small hemorrhagic foci in the cerebral cortex and liver fibrosis with fatty degeneration of the hepatocytes. To evaluate aging lesions, the brain was examined histologically and immunohistochemically. Severe amyloid β (Aβ) deposition was observed in the cerebral cortex and vascular walls. Parenchymal Aβ deposits in the cerebral cortex appeared as diffuse plaques. Loss of smooth muscle was observed in the vascula

Mechanism of activation of an ancestral TEC kinase by PIP3.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

Association between leukocyte telomere length and neurodegenerative diseases: a prospective cohort in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the association between leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and the risk of incident NDDs using a large-scale cohort from the UK Biobank. METHODS: Data from 459,902 subjects were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models and machine learning (ML) algorithms to assess LTL's association with NDD risk. RESULTS: Shorter LTL was associated with an increased risk of NDDs, including Alzheimer's disease (HR: 0.52, 95% CI 0.40-0.67, P < 0.001), dementia in AD (HR: 0.53, 95% CI 0.39-0.73, P < 0.001), unspecified dementia (HR: 0.74, 95% CI 0.58-0.95, P < 0.05

Connectivity as a universal predictor of tau progression in atypical Alzheimer's disease.

The link between regional tau load and clinical manifestation of Alzheimer's disease (AD) highlights the importance of characterizing spatial tau distribution across disease variants. In typical (memory-predominant) AD, the spatial progression of tau pathology mirrors the functional connections from temporal lobe epicentres. However, given the limited spatial heterogeneity of tau in typical AD, atypical (non-amnestic-predominant) AD variants with distinct tau patterns provide a key opportunity to investigate the universality of connectivity as a scaffold for tau progression. In this large-scal

The Determinant of Tau Spreading in Alzheimer's Disease: Dependent on Senile Plaque, Neural Circuits, or Spatial Proximity?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is neuropathologically characterized by tau-immunopositive neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and amyloid-β (Aβ)-immunopositive senile plaques. According to the widely accepted amyloid cascade hypothesis, Aβ pathology represents the upstream event in AD pathophysiology and induces tau aggregation. However, numerous studies have suggested that tau aggregates correlate more closely with neuronal loss and regional brain atrophy than with Aβ depositions. Tau aggregation in AD demonstrates a hierarchical spreading pattern beginning in the transentorhinal cortex, but the mechani

IGF-1 rs6218 polymorphisms modulate the susceptibility to age-related cataract.

BACKGROUND: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), as the most abundant form of DNA variation in the human genome, contribute to age-related cataracts (ARC) development. Apoptosis of lens epithelial cells (LECs) is closely related to ARC formation. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) contributes to cell apoptosis regulation. Moreover, IGF1 was indicated to exhibit a close association with cataract formation. Afterward, an investigation was conducted to examine the correlation between polymorphisms in IGF1 and the susceptibility to ARC. METHODS: The present investigation was a case-control st

Death-associated protein kinase 1 as a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia in the elderly and represents a major clinical challenge in the ageing society. Neuropathological hallmarks of AD include neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau, senile plaques derived from the deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides, brain atrophy induced by neuronal loss, and synaptic dysfunctions. Death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1) is ubiquitously expressed in the central nervous system. Dysregulation of DAPK1 has been shown to contribute to various neurological diseases including AD, ischemic stroke a

Zebrafish Experimental Animal Models for AD: A Comprehensive Review.

AD disease (AD) is a multifaceted and intricate neurodegenerative disorder characterized by intracellular neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) formation and the excessive production and deposition of Aβ senile plaques. While transgenic AD models have been found instrumental in unravelling AD pathogenesis, they involve cost and time constraints during the preclinical phase. Zebrafish, owing to their simplicity, well-defined behavioural patterns, and relevance to neurodegenerative research, have emerged as a promising complementary model. Zebrafish possess glutaminergic and cholinergic pathways implicat

Age-Related Pathology in Corticobasal Degeneration.

Elderly human brains are vulnerable to multiple proteinopathies, although each protein has a different transmission pathway. Tau-immunoreactive astrocytes are well-known in elderly brains. In contrast, astrocytic plaques, a hallmark in corticobasal degeneration (CBD), rarely occur in aging and neurodegenerative disease other than CBD. To elucidate the clinicopathological correlation of aging-related pathology in CBD, we examined 21 pathologically proven CBD cases in our institute (12 males and 9 females, with a mean age of death 70.6 years). All CBD cases showed grains and neurofibrillary tang

Novel insights into presenilin 1 mutation associated with a distinctive dementia phenotype and cotton wool plaques.

BACKGROUND: The mutations in the presenilin 1 gene (PSEN1) are the main cause of familial Alzheimer's disease. PSEN1 mutations affect amyloid-beta peptide production, which accumulates in the brain as senile plaque and cotton wool plaques (CWPs) and relates to other neurodegenerative disorders. Here we report the second case of the PSEN1 G266S mutation, which showed distinctive neuropathological features, including abundant CWPs. Lewy body pathology, and altered amyloid-beta production. METHOD: Using the proband's samples, we performed genetic analysis of the PSEN1, APP, MAPT, and APOE genes,

Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) extract reverts glycaemic imbalance and cognitive impairment in an animal model of obesity.

The rates of overweight and obesity around the world have increased in past years. The body's adipose tissue stimulates the antioxidant and oxidation imbalance capacity at the cellular level. This scenario favors an inflammatory low-grade systemic condition starting with insulin resistance, which in turn may involve diabetes mellitus type 2 and cognitive decline afterward. Neurological diseases have been correlated to senile age diseases over time. This scenario calls for a change in the incidence of obesity in the younger generation. An unhealthy dietary consumption together with sedentary ha

Proactive M2 blockade prevents cognitive decline in GRK5-deficient APP transgenic mice via enhancing cholinergic neuronal resilience.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses an immense challenge in healthcare, lacking effective therapies. This study investigates the potential of anthranilamide derivative (AAD23), a selective M2 receptor antagonist, in proactively preventing cognitive impairments and cholinergic neuronal degeneration in G protein-coupled receptor kinase-5-deficient Swedish APP (GAP) mice. GAP mice manifest cognitive deficits by 7 months and develop senile plaques by 9 months. A 6-month AAD23 treatment was initiated at 5 months and stopped at 11 months before behavioral assessments without the treatment. AAD23-treated

Pinpointing Novel Plasma and Brain Proteins for Common Ocular Diseases: A Comprehensive Cross-Omics Integration Analysis.

The pathogenesis of ocular diseases (ODs) remains unclear, although genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous associated genetic risk loci. We integrated protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) datasets and five large-scale GWAS summary statistics of ODs under a cutting-edge systematic analytic framework. Proteome-wide association studies (PWAS) identified plasma and brain proteins associated with ODs, and 11 plasma proteins were identified by Mendelian randomization (MR) and colocalization (COLOC) analyses as being potentially causally associated with ODs.
