Epilepsies of neonatal onset: seizure type and evolution.

Most neonatal seizures are occasional seizures and not true epilepsy. This study investigates seizure types of true neonatal epilepsies and their evolution with development. Seventy-five children with epilepsies of onset within 1 month of life, who were examined between 1970 and 1995, and whose seizure types could be confirmed with ictal EEG recordings, were studied. The patients were followed up for a minimum of 3 years and the evolution of epileptic syndromes was investigated. Sixty-three (84%) of 75 patients had partial seizures, while nine had generalized seizures, and only three had both

West syndrome and its related epileptic syndromes.

The purpose of this project was to study the relationship between West syndrome (WS) and its related epileptic syndromes, and reconsider the nosological limits of WS. The electroclinical features of 45 patients who experienced spasms in series were investigated, as well as some features not common in patients with WS. All patients were mentally retarded. The patients were divided into three groups: Group 1 consisted of 12 patients with refractory epilepsies with onset in early infancy, group 2 consisted of 5 patients with symptomatic localization-related epilepsies associated with spasms in se

Etiological spectrum of symptomatic localization related epilepsies: a study from South India.

Putative etiology was studied in 991 patients with symptomatic localization-related epilepsies seen in a university hospital in South India. They formed 39% of patients with various types of epilepsies and epileptic syndromes seen during the study period. Seizure occurred in close temporal association with an acute central nervous system (CNS) insult in 53% of patients. Infections of CNS including single CT enhancing lesion (SCTEL) accounted for 77% of patients with acute symptomatic epilepsy. Cerebrovascular diseases were the risk factors in 48% of patients with remote symptomatic epilepsy. N

Prevalence of childhood epilepsy in Kaunas, Lithuania.

The prevalence of epilepsy in children aged 0-15 years of Kaunas city, Lithuania, was evaluated on 1 January 1995. Multiple sources for case identification were used, i.e. medical records at the university hospital, regional outpatient clinics and consultation centres, institutions, schools and kindergartens for the handicapped. Active epilepsy was defined as two or more unprovoked epileptic seizures with at least one seizure occurring within the previous 5 years, regardless of the antiepileptic drug treatment. Prevalence was found to be 4.25 (3.42, if age-standardized) in 1000. The highest ra

Prevalence, classification, and severity of epilepsy and epileptic syndromes in children.

PURPOSE: To determine the point prevalence of active childhood epilepsy in a defined area and evaluate the usefulness of ILAE classification of seizures, and epilepsies/syndromes with special interest in severe epilepsies. METHODS: By using the latest ILAE International Classification of Epileptic Seizures (ICES, 1981) and Epilepsies and Epileptic Syndromes (ICE, 1989), we determined the age- and sex-specific prevalence rates of epilepsy, type of seizures, epilepsies, and recognizable epileptic syndromes, as well as the proportion of severe cases in each seizure/epilepsy/syndrome category in

A clinical approach to the classification of seizures and epileptic syndromes.

Seizures and epilepsies are heterogeneous. Their classifications are essential for clinicians to achieve a common understanding of the disorders. The diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of seizure disorders depend on the correct identification of the types of seizures and epilepsy. The two currently accepted classifications are the International Classification of Epileptic Seizures and the International Classification of Epilepsies and Epileptic Syndromes. Both are based on clinical and electrophysiologic data, and both maintain a basic dichotomy between partial (focal, localization-related) a

Cryptogenic localization-related epilepsy of neonatal onset.

We report three patients with localization-related epilepsy of neonatal onset. They exhibited favourable psychomotor development and had no cerebral lesions on neuroimaging studies despite the presence of intractable partial seizures of neonatal onset. Although rare, some cases of epilepsy of neonatal onset may be cryptogenic, i.e. they belong to neither the symptomatic nor the idiopathic group.

Classifications and epidemiologic considerations of epileptic seizures and epilepsy.

The manifestations of epileptic disorders are widely known to be extremely protean. Classifying the disorders is a way of achieving a common understanding of the terminology used in identifying seizure disorders in the clinical or research settings. Two International Classifications have been developed, namely the International Classification of Epileptic Seizures and the International Classification of Epilepsy and Epileptic Syndromes. The first divides epileptic seizures into two major categories: partial and generalized. Partial epileptic seizures are further classified according to the imp

Usefulness of the newly proposed International Classification of Epilepsies, Epileptic Syndromes, and Related Seizure Disorders (1989): a trial on adult patients in a neuropsychiatric clinic.

The utility of the "International Classification of Epilepsies, Epileptic Syndromes, and Related Seizure Disorders," proposed by ILAE in 1989, was investigated in a neuropsychiatric clinic with a patient population numbering 300. Two hundred and three patients (67.7%) had localization-related epilepsies (LRE), including one idiopathic case. Sixty-six patients (22%) had generalized epilepsies, 50 idiopathic, 2 Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and 14 symptomatic. Thirty-one patients (10.3%) with generalized tonic-clonic seizures occurring only during sleep had the epilepsies undetermined whether they ar

Intractable epilepsy and disturbed visuomotor performance.

The factors relevant to intractability, types of epilepsy and impairment of dexterity in patients with intractable epilepsy were studied independently in different groups of patients. The factors relevant to intractable epilepsy that were disclosed in 202 patients, who required hospitalization more than twice, were as follows: strong seizure propensity, neuropsychiatric disorders including mental deterioration of various degrees, ataxia, personality changes and psychotic episodes, intolerance to antiepileptic drugs due to acute or chronic side effects, idiosyncrasy and internal disorders, self
