Presentation of childhood CNS tumours: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suspicion of a CNS tumour is classically raised by symptoms of raised intracranial pressure, focal deficits (including seizures), or papilloedema. Development of guidelines is needed for the identification and referral of children who might have a CNS tumour. We did a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to identify the clinical presentation of childhood CNS tumours to provide evidence to support the development of guidelines to assist with the identification and referral for imaging of children who might have a central nervous system tumour. METHODS: Medline, Embase, an

Neurologic manifestations of ulcerative colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) has traditionally been considered to be an inflammatory disease limited to the colonic mucosa. However, since it has been shown that UC is frequently accompanied by various extraintestinal disorders, there is increasing evidence that UC may also manifest in the nervous system. The following review focuses particularly on these possible manifestations of UC, both in the peripheral (PNS), and in the central nervous system (CNS). A systematic literature search according to the MEDLINE database was performed for this purpose. Although a reliable differentiation may clinical

Melatonin role in the mitochondrial function.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the etiologic agent for warts and cervical cancer. In Mexico, the death rate from cervical cancer is extremely high, and statistical data show that since 1990 the number of deaths is increasing. Condylomas and cancer of the penis are the most common lesions presented in men; bladder and prostate cancer in men are also associated with the presence of HPV. Since HPV is transmitted by sexual intercourse, treating both partners is necessary in order to eliminate the virus in the population. Approaches to this include preventative vaccines such as Gardasil,

Efficacy and prognosis of a short course of prednisolone therapy for pediatric epilepsy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of adjunctive prednisolone therapy in children with cryptogenic epileptic encephalopathy, other than infantile spasms, and to determine its prognosis. METHODS: Prednisolone, 2mg/kg per day for 6 weeks, tapered for a further 2 weeks, was given in combination with previously prescribed antiepileptic drugs. A retrospective assessment of 41 children thus treated included measurements of seizure frequency, electroencephalographic findings, global assessments of cognitive function, and adverse drug events. Long-term patient prognoses over a mean follow-u

Autoimmune thyroid encephalopathy presenting with epilepsia partialis continua.

We report the first case of an autoimmune thyroid encephalopathy presenting with multifocal motor status epilepticus. A 37-year-old female patient was admitted with multifocal motor seizures intractable to intravenous status epilepticus treatments, asymmetrical quadriparesis, truncal ataxia and continuous semi-rhythmical jerks. Pathological signal alterations were detected in both precentral cortices in MRI examination. Autoimmune thyroiditis was diagnosed after radiological examinations of the thyroid gland and thyroid function tests. Seizures promptly ceased following intravenous steroid tre

Viral infections in neonates with seizures.

The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of viral infections in the central nervous system (CNS) of neonates with seizures of unknown origin. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of 50 neonates were studied for antibodies to 13 different microbes by enzyme immunoassay, and CSF samples were investigated for four specific nucleic acids by polymerase chain reaction. For viral cultures throat, stool and CSF samples were obtained. CNS viral infection was suggested in 13 of the 50 neonates (26%). Antibodies to varicella, herpes simplex 1, influenza A or B, parainfluenza 1, adeno o

Astrocytic cytoplasmic inclusions within an epileptic focus in an otherwise neurologically intact patient.

A 17-year-old woman with intractable seizures since infancy underwent resection of an epileptic focus in the left frontal cortex. The cytoplasm of many cortical astrocytes contained amorphous eosinophilic inclusions, which ultrastructurally were non-membrane bound and consisted of densely packed osmiophilic material. Similar inclusions have previously been observed, at autopsy, in patients with unspecified mental retardation and various brain malformations. The present report is unique in that the inclusions were detected in the resected specimen of an epileptic focus. The patient is neurologi

Univariate genetic analyses of epilepsy and seizures in a population-based twin study: the Virginia Twin Registry.

The purpose of this study was to examine the roles of genetic and environmental factors in the etiology of epilepsy and seizures in twins ascertained from the Virginia Twin Registry. Health history information on twins was collected by questionnaire. Concordance rates were calculated and used to estimate degree of concordance for seizure types in monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs. Univariate twin analyses were performed for each epilepsy and seizure type to determine models which best explained observed variation. Health history information concerning epilepsy and febrile seizure

Forecasting generalized epileptic seizures from the EEG signal by wavelet analysis and dynamic unsupervised fuzzy clustering.

Dynamic state recognition and event-prediction are fundamental tasks in biomedical signal processing. We present a new, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based, brain-state identification method which could form the basis for forecasting a generalized epileptic seizure. The method relies on the existence in the EEG of a preseizure state, with extractable unique features, a priori undefined. We exposed 25 rats to hyperbaric oxygen until the appearance of a generalized EEG seizure. EEG segments from the preexposure, early exposure, and the period up to and including the seizure were processed by the fa
