BACKGROUND: In China, rabies vaccine is only permitted to use under the Essen 5-dose regimen for the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). However, Purified chick embryo cell vaccine made in India (Rabipur) has been approved in use under 2-1-1 immune program in 2010. Our objective is to confirm the immunogenicity and safety of PVRV manufactured in China (SPEEDA) under 2-1-1 program, compared with Rabipur and with the Essen 5-dose regimen.
METHODS: A total of 112 subjects were divided into three groups: 50 subjects in test group A, 32 subjects in control group B and 30 subjects in control gr

Nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) refers to a prolonged seizure that manifests primarily as altered mental status as opposed to the dramatic convulsions seen in generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus. There are 2 main types of NCSE, each of which has a different presentation, cause, and expected outcome. In the first type of NCSE, patients present with confusion or abnormal behavior, suggesting the diagnosis of absence status epilepticus (ASE) or complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE). The second type of NCSE (subtle status epilepticus [SSE]) must be considered in comatose patien

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Status epilepticus is one of the most common emergencies in neurology, and every third patient does not respond to adequate first-line treatment. Refractory status epilepticus may be associated with increased morbidity and mortality, and new treatment options are urgently required. This review critically discusses recently published data regarding the role of 'new' antiepileptic drugs, the efficacy and safety of anesthetic agents, and the overall clinical outcome that is an integral part of treatment decisions.
RECENT FINDINGS: In complex partial status epilepticus, levetir

A young woman presented with memory problems of subacute onset. Imaging was normal. She was admitted with severe complex partial status epilepticus requiring intensive care support and ventilation. Fits proved difficult to control requiring high dose anticonvulsants. She developed a profound amnesic syndrome. A clinical diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis was considered and she was treated with intravenous steroids with an excellent cognitive outcome. She continues to have occasional seizures.

Complex partial status epilepticus of frontal origin can manifest as nonconvulsive behavioral symptoms that mimic psychiatric illness and, thus, may elude timely diagnosis. The diagnosis can be further delayed by absence of ictal activity on scalp electroencephalography when the ictal origin is orbitofrontal or mesial frontal. We describe the case of a 51-year-old woman with clinically subtle complex partial status epilepticus of left orbitofrontal origin, lacking any clear ictal pattern on the electroencephalogram, who was finally diagnosed using positron emission tomography with [(18)F]fluor

Nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) is not uncommon, especially in the elderly population. It can occasionally present as confusion, personality change, coma, subtle motor activity and psychosis, thus causing diagnostic difficulties. We report an unusual case of NCSE which presented as psychosis-like episodes at regular intervals. The confirmation of diagnosis was aided by serial electroencephalography.

Nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) comprises a group of syndromes that display a great diversity regarding response to anticonvulsants ranging from virtually self-limiting variants to entirely refractory forms. Therefore, treatment on intensive care units (ICUs) is required only for a selection of cases. The aetiology and clinical form of NCSE are strong predictors for the overall prognosis. Absence status epilepticus is commonly seen in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy and is rapidly terminated by low-dose of benzodiazepines. The management of complex partial status epilepti

OBJECTIVE: Nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) represents an important percentage of status epilepticus in adults, but detailed studies of both NCSE proper and comatose NCSE are lacking. We retrospectively analyzed a prospectively collected series of 50 adult patients with a diagnosis of NCSE whose electroencephalograms (EEGs) have been interpreted for a period of 10 years by the same investigator.
METHODS: Two groups, NCSE proper and comatose NCSE were considered. All clinical, EEGs, neuroimaging data, antiepileptic treatment and outcome were analyzed.
RESULTS: Thirty-two patients (64%)

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate current evidence for the use of lacosamide in the treatment of refractory status epilepticus.
DATA SOURCES: Literature was accessed via PubMed (through July 2011) using the terms lacosamide and status epilepticus.
STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: All reports on the use of lacosamide in patients with status epilepticus were included for evaluation. Reviews and animal data were excluded.
DATA SYNTHESIS: Treatment of status epilepticus is challenging, and most patients fail to respond to initial treatment. Recently, several reports have been published on the use of l

Epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) is clinically defined as a syndrome of continuous focal jerking of a body part, usually a distal limb, occurring over hours, days, or even years. It is considered the status epilepticus equivalent of simple partial motor seizures. A 48-year-old right-handed man with a history of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage was admitted for right-sided hemiplegia and drowsiness after complex partial status epilepticus. An EEG showed periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges over the left hemisphere. Brain MRI revealed extensive multifocal encephalomalaciac changes in

Utilization behavior (UB) consists of reaching out and using objects in the environment in an automatic manner and out of context. This behavior has been correlated to frontal lobe dysfunction, especially of the right hemisphere. We describe a 60-year-old woman, affected by a glioblastoma located in the right frontal region, who presented with intermittent UB of the mobile phone as the main clinical manifestation of partial complex status epilepticus. Video/EEG studies showed a striking correlation between mobile phone utilization and ictal epileptic activity. Clinical and EEG findings were ma

A three-year-old boy presented with status epilepticus with right hemiconvulsion and complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE) that were preceded by disturbance of consciousness and right hemiplegia just after a traumatic head injury. He was diagnosed as Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) because of the presence of a small cutaneous port-wine nevus and the nature of his MRI findings. The nevus was located in the middle of the forehead and was light in color. Intravenous drip infusion of lidocaine was effective for the treatment of CPSE, but the patient has experienced refractory complex partial seizu

Non convulsive confusional status epilepticus is classically divided on the basis of the ictal EEG into absence status (AS) and complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE). The clinical presentation is often insufficient to establish diagnosis and emergency EEG is required. AS is a polymorphic condition that can complicate many epileptic syndromes. In half of cases, confusion of varying intensity is associated with bilateral periocular myoclonias. Clinical and EEG normalization is obtained after intravenous benzodiazepine injection. From a nosographic point of view, four types of AS may be recog

In this second paper the clinical features and electrophysiological underpinnings of more complex psychotic states associated with epilepsy are reviewed. (a) Complex partial status epilepticus, in particular of temporal lobe origin, may result in mental states remarkably similar to those seen in the primary psychoses. This non-convulsive state is associated with prolonged epileptic discharges on intracranial stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) in hippocampal and other mesial temporal structures, sometimes without abnormalities on the scalp EEG. Where hallucinatory or psychotic symptomatology d

Encephalitis with anti-NMDA receptor antibodies is a recently-recognised form of paraneoplastic encephalitis characterized by a prodromal phase of unspecific illness with fever resembling viral disease, followed by memory loss, psychiatric features, seizures, disturbed consciousness, prominent abnormal movements and autonomic imbalance. Association with ovarian teratoma is common. Neurological outcome can be good, especially when surgery is performed at an early stage. Here, we report a case of anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis associated with ovarian teratoma presenting with inaugural complex p

Metabolic disturbances are often associated with epileptic seizures, but the pathogenesis of this relationship is poorly understood. We describe the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with complex partial status epilepticus with visual seizures in the context of ketotic hyperglycemia. The EEG revealed a temporal epileptogenic focus and alterations were apparent on MRI in the acute phase and 4 months later. Very few cases of seizures in ketotic patients have been reported because ketone bodies have a protective effect against epilepsy. Seizures in hyperglycemia tend to be partial, and the

We report a 57-year-old female who presented with epilepsia partialis continua and rapidly progressed to refractory complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE) with brain magnetic resonance imaging revealing a focal cortical lesion on T2 sequences corresponding to the seizure focus on ictal electroencephalographic recordings. The patient underwent focal cortical resection of the seizure focus. Though clinical and electrographic seizure activity ceased, the patient remained unresponsive with repeat neuroimaging showing diffuse limbic and brainstem involvement. Serological tests revealed anti-Hu a
