Mislabeling (label noise) - an often overlooked issue in chemometrics.

BACKGROUND: In supervised learning, errors can arise in label values. This fact is well known in machine learning (ML), where it has been studied since the late 1960s, but is often ignored in chemometrics. The main reason for mislabeling is human errors when supervision is carried out by a person. It is also inevitable in cases where a continuous process is divided into stages for their subsequent supervised discrimination. Another reason is the imperfection of an instrumental method, which poorly reflects the differences between classes. RESULTS: This paper pursues two goals. The first one i

Water limitation modifies vocal performance in California mice: implications for acoustic communication under environmental stress.

In arid environments or during prolonged drought periods, maintaining hydration becomes increasingly challenging, often requiring organisms to reduce investment in costly behaviors. Vocal performance is sensitive to hydration status because systemic dehydration can alter vocal fold mechanics and reduce vocal efficiency. In many mammals, vocalizations are produced when expiratory airflow induces self-sustained vibration of the vocal folds, making this mechanism vulnerable to systemic water imbalance. This study tested whether dehydration alters singing rate and acoustic song parameters in adult

The endocannabinoid system and the ageing brain.

Ageing is accompanied by a progressive decline in homeostatic resilience that increases vulnerability to chronic disease, disability and cognitive impairment. Although unhealthy brain ageing can often be prevented by managing the underlying risk factors, the molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms that connect risk factors to late-life brain dysfunction remain incompletely understood. This review examines the role of the endocannabinoid system in brain ageing. The endocannabinoid system is a short-range lipid signalling network that helps to maintain neuronal, glial, metabolic and inf

Insulin-mediated ciliary remodeling in the choroid plexus epithelium.

The choroid plexus (ChP) epithelium plays a crucial role in cerebrospinal fluid production and brain homeostasis. ChP is mainly composed of multiciliated epithelial cells that exhibit a noncanonical ciliary organization whose function is still debated. Insulin signaling is known to be important for central nervous system function, but its role in ChP function and ciliary organization has not been elucidated yet. To investigate how prolonged insulin exposure modulates ChP cells, we treated primary murine choroid plexus epithelial cells (pCPECs) with insulin for up to six days and used a combina

Baseline characteristics and bone mineral density changes associated with lower fracture risk in osteoporosis: a retrospective cohort study.

Late diagnosis of osteoporosis with already existing low-energy fractures, often incorrect reassessment of fracture risk and suboptimal therapy is associated with significant unmet needs in high-risk patients. Predictors for fracture risk assessment are the basis of the long-term strategy for monitoring, stratifying patients and treating osteoporosis. To evaluate whether changes in total bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine and BMD of the femoral neck over 36 months were associated with transition to a lower estimated fracture risk category after adjustment for baseline patient chara

Revascularize first, resect second: off-pump excision of giant SVG pseudoaneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Saphenous vein graft pseudoaneurysm is a rare late complication of coronary artery bypass grafting. Management is particularly challenging when the pseudoaneurysm-bearing graft remains an active source of myocardial perfusion. A 67-year-old man presented 33 years after coronary artery bypass grafting with progressive exertional dyspnea. Echocardiography demonstrated a large mass abutting the right atrium. Computed tomography angiography showed a 10 × 7 × 6 cm partially thrombosed pseudoaneurysm arising from the saphenous vein graft to the right posterior descending artery, with rig

The differential associations of reminiscence and exploratory travel with late-life psychological well-being: A prospective cohort study.

Leisure travel has been associated with better mental health in older adults, but it is unclear whether different travel motivations (remembering the past vs seeking new experiences) are differentially associated with anxiety and feelings of meaning in life, respectively. This study aimed to explore whether there are prospective associations between nostalgia-oriented and exploration-oriented travel motivations and follow-up anxiety symptoms and the sense of meaning in life among older adults and examine the possible underlying psychological pathways. This prospective cohort study included 548

Immunomodulatory potential of Mongolian medicine in sepsis: current evidence, challenges, and translational perspectives.

Sepsis is a heterogeneous, time-dependent syndrome in which inflammatory injury, immune suppression, endothelial dysfunction, metabolic disturbance, and barrier failure may coexist. This narrative review evaluates whether current pharmacological evidence provides a defensible basis for investigating Traditional Mongolian Medicine as an adjunctive source of immunomodulatory candidates in sepsis. A concise account of sepsis immunopathology is used as an interpretive framework, after which evidence from named Mongolian formulas, extracts, medicinal materials, and isolated constituents is mapped a

Ensemble signal detection reveals target-specific temporal risk of hypokalemia after immune checkpoint inhibition: a translational pharmacology framework.

INTRODUCTION: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized cancer treatment, but traditional pharmacovigilance lacks a translational computational framework capable of resolving target-specific nonlinear temporal risks of adverse events such as hypokalemia. METHODS: We integrated 3,243 ICI-related hypokalemia reports from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and VigiBase (2014-2024). An ensemble signal-detection strategy cross-validated four disproportionality algorithms (Reporting Odds Ratio [ROR], Proportional Reporting Ratio [PRR], Empirical Bayesian Geometric Mean [EB

Female Wild Turkeys Exhibit Context Dependence in Their Selection of Roads.

It is essential for wildlife managers to understand how animals interact with and respond to the landscape. However, wildlife-habitat relationships are often context-dependent, with habitat selection influenced by abiotic and biotic factors. Recognizing this, we investigated how roads influenced female wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris; hereafter female) seasonal habitat selection in Maine, USA, as a function of road type, time-of-day, and land cover type to identify context-dependent responses. Because previous research has demonstrated that wildlife can display variable selection p

Parkinson's disease mortality in the United States, 1999-2025: a national multiple-cause-of-death analysis with projections to 2030.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the United States and a growing driver of late-life disability and death. We characterized U.S. PD-related mortality from 1999 to 2025 and projected it to 2030. METHODS: In this serial cross-sectional analysis of CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death data, PD-related deaths in adults aged ≥45 years were identified using ICD-10 code G20 recorded anywhere on the death certificate. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 100,000 were decomposed by joinpoint regression and projected to 2030 using a log-scal

Nocturnal arthropod occurrences across Natura 2000 protected areas of Madeira Island (Portugal).

BACKGROUND: Artificial light at night (ALAN) is increasingly recognised as an important anthropogenic pressure affecting nocturnal biodiversity, particularly in oceanic islands with high endemism levels. Arthropods, especially moths (Lepidoptera), are key components of nocturnal ecosystems, yet their distribution and abundance patterns in Madeira Island remain insufficiently documented and their responses to ALAN are poorly understood. This study was implemented under the LIFE Natura@night project - Mitigating light pollution in Macaronesia (LIFE20 NAT/PT/001098; https://www.naturaatnight.spea

Fusobacterium nucleatum: a keystone bridging pathogen in polymicrobial biofilms and host immune dysregulation.

Oral infectious diseases such as periodontitis stem from disrupted homeostasis between host immunity and polymicrobial biofilm communities. Fusobacterium nucleatum, a ubiquitous oral commensal, is a key intermediate colonizer with well-documented interspecies coaggregation activity. It has been proposed as a bridging pathobiont that contributes to microbial dysbiosis and immune dysregulation at the host-microbe interface, though its in vivo structural bridging function remains debated. This mini-review synthesizes recent advances in understanding the dual functions of F. nucleatum in interspec

Effects of Three Artemisia Extracts and Their Combinations on the Gut Barrier Function and Transcriptomic Regulation of the Jejunum in Laying Hens.

Maintaining intestinal health during the late-laying period is important for sustaining feed efficiency and bird health. Plant-derived feed additives have been explored as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with the extracts of three Artemisia species, individually and in combination, on laying performance, antioxidant status, and intestinal barrier function in laying hens. A total of 720 62-week-old Jingfen No. 6 laying hens were assigned to eight dietary treatments, with six replicate cages per treatment and 15 hens per ca

Environmental exposures and intergenerational cardiovascular risk: epigenetic reprogramming via parental exercise.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a predominant cause of global mortality. The spectrum of traditional risk factors is rapidly expanding, largely driven by the modern cardiovascular exposome. This comprehensive exposome encompasses environmental hazards, sedentary lifestyles, and severe psychosocial stress. Clinical management has evolved toward an integrated system to counteract these threats, yet traditional strategies primarily target the middle and late stages of pathogenesis. Addressing this limitation, modern research has shifted its focus to intergenerational effects. At the molecula

Enabling the High-Volume Utilization of Iron-Rich Sewage Sludge Ash in Cement: The Role of Curing Temperature in Microstructure and Performance Enhancement.

The massive generation of sewage sludge ash (SSA) poses severe environmental challenges worldwide. Ternary blended cement incorporating SSA and limestone represents a promising green cementitious material that enables high-volume SSA utilization, yet the retarding effect of SSA on cement hydration leads to unsatisfactory early compressive strength, which remains the primary bottleneck restricting its large-scale engineering application, particularly at high replacement levels. In this work, the compressive strength development, hydration heat evolution, phase assemblage, and pore structure of

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) is a devastating subtype of stroke with high morbidity and mortality. Early hematoma expansion (HE) is a key modifiable factor associated with neurological deterioration. Data on early HE dynamics in China populations with relatively late presentation (median time to admission >6 h) remain limited. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 199 adult patients with sICH who had baseline and 24-h follow-up non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) scans. Hematoma volume was measured using the ABC/2 method. Early HE was defined
