Liposome-entrapped superoxide dismutase reduces cerebral infarction in cerebral ischemia in rats.

We studied the role of superoxide radicals in the pathogenesis of ischemic brain injury using a model of focal cerebral ischemia in 102 rats and liposome-entrapped CuZn-superoxide dismutase, which can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and cell membranes efficiently. The bolus intravenous administration of 25,000 units of liposome-entrapped CuZn-superoxide dismutase elevated superoxide dismutase activities in the blood and brain 1, 2, 8, and 24 hours later as well as in the ischemic hemisphere and contralateral cortex. Determined 24 hours after right middle cerebral and bilateral common carotid

Impaired potassium-induced dilation in hypertensive rat cerebral arteries does not reflect altered Na+,K(+)-ATPase dilation.

We have recently demonstrated that K(+)-induced dilation of cerebral resistance-sized vessels has two independent components, only one of which seemed sodium pump dependent. In our current investigation, potassium-induced dilation of spontaneous tone was compared in cerebral arteries from normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats and age-matched stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats. Branches of the posterior cerebral artery were cannulated and pressurized, and these vessels developed spontaneous tone. After a 5-minute period in K(+)-free physiological saline solution, K+ was increased in 1-mM inc

Hemiplegia in posterior cerebral artery occlusion.

We report 4 patients with hemiplegia due to a posterior cerebral artery occlusion. Associated clinical signs were aphasia, alexia or a neglect syndrome, hemianopia, and hemisensory loss. Hemiplegia was due to infarction in the lateral midbrain. The level of the occlusion in the posterior cerebral artery may be located distal to the junction with the posterior communicating artery.

Hemodynamics in internal carotid artery occlusion examined by positron emission tomography.

Using positron emission tomography in nine patients with minor strokes, unilateral internal carotid artery occlusion, and good collateral circulation through the anterior portion of the circle of Willis, we analyzed regional cerebral blood flow, cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen, oxygen extraction fraction, and cerebral blood volume. These studies allowed quantification of the regional hemodynamic status, especially in relation to watershed areas. Compared with eight normal controls, the patients had significantly (p less than 0.01) decreased regional cerebral blood flow in the middle cerebral

Deep perforators from the carotid system. Template of the vascular territories.

Most reports on small infarcts in the territory of the deep perforators that arise from the internal carotid artery and its branches have focused on the anatomical structures. Recently, it has become possible to map the territories of the deep perforators from the carotid system, based on matching previous anatomical studies with recent data from computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging studies. The middle cerebral artery gives origin to two main groups of perforators: the medial and lateral lenticulostriate arteries. Rarely, the thalamotuberal artery may take origin from the middle

[CT findings of watershed infarction; comparison of 123I-IMP SPECT and IV-DSA].

A watershed infarction is a specific type of a cerebral infarction. This occurs at the border zone between major cerebral arteries. Its CT findings are characteristic as a wedge shaped low density appearing either in the superior frontal region (watershed between anterior and middle and posterior cerebral artery), and always involving the deep white matter onto the ventricle wall. Even though the CT feature is small, a patient, without exception, suffers from neurologic deficit. We studied four cases of a watershed infarction on X-ray CT and compared with 123I-IMP SPECT. DSA was also made to d

Does migraine-related stroke occur in childhood?

This report concerns seven children who had at least one episode of infarct, possibly during an attack of migraine. They fulfilled the following criteria: presence of acute neurological deficit associated with headache or other symptoms characteristic of migraine attacks; a history of migraine; evidence of infarct on CT scan; and no other evident cause of the stroke. CT showed that the area of infarction was in the distribution of the posterior cerebral artery in three cases. Four of the children have been followed for at least 23 months and none has severe residual deficit. An aetiological re

[The microsurgical treatment of arterial aneurysms of the vertebrobasilar basin].

Experience in microsurgical treatment of 23 patients with aneurysms of the vertebrobasilar bed at the Institute of Neurosurgery, AMS USSR, is discussed. Some aspects of surgical approaches and the method of removal of the aneurysms are described. Particular attention is focussed on complicated surgical situations which needed non-standard solutions (division of the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery and the posterior communicating artery). All patients were operated on in the "cold" period after spontaneous intracranial hemorrhages. The postoperative mortality (one patient) is analysed

[The effect of visual deafferentation on changes in the cerebral blood flow during photic stimulation].

With the aid of transcranial dopplerography, linear velocity of the blood flow was recorded in major cerebral vessels in resting and in photostimulation in 18 healthy subjects and 7 patients with unilateral lesion of visual pathway and exclusion of one half of the field of vision. The photostimulation accelerated the blood flow in middle cerebral arteries by 4.3% and in posterior cerebral arteries by 26.3% in healthy subjects. No acceleration of the blood flow occurred in posterior cerebral artery on the side of unilateral lesion of visual pathways.

Angiographic changes suggestive of vasospasm in migraine complicated by stroke.

A 30-year-old woman with a history of common migraine developed a permanent left homonymous hemianopia during a typical headache. CT scan demonstrated a right posterior cerebral infarction and angiography showed irregular narrowing of the ipsilateral posterior cerebral artery, suggestive of vasospasm. In the case no risk factors for atherosclerotic stroke were present except for smoking, and no other causes of stroke could be found.

Comparison of transcranial and cervical continuous-wave Doppler in the evaluation of intracranial collateral circulation.

Adequate intracranial collateral circulation reduces risk of stroke in carotid artery surgery. To evaluate their relative accuracies in assessing intracranial collateral blood flow, we prospectively compared transcranial Doppler and continuous-wave Doppler of the cervical carotid arteries combined with compression of the common carotid artery in 28 consecutive patients before carotid endarterectomy. Ten healthy volunteers served as controls. Three patients (11%) were excluded from compression of arteries because of diffuse disease in the common carotid artery. A total of 199 compressions were

Brain natriuretic peptide-like immunoreactive innervation of the cerebrovascular system in the rat.

Brain natriuretic peptide is a recently discovered neuropeptide. We used an antiserum against porcine brain natriuretic peptide to identify a system of immunoreactive innervation of the cerebrovascular tree in the rat. The internal carotid artery and the proximal portions of the middle and anterior cerebral and posterior communicating arteries were the most intensely innervated by immunoreactive fibers. The density of innervation decreased distally along the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries and the basilar and vertebral arteries. Brain natriuretic peptide and the related atria

Neurogenic control of the cerebral circulation during global ischemia.

The influence of the trigeminal nerve on the cerebral circulation was investigated in chronically denervated cats during and after reversible four-vessel occlusion for 10 minutes combined with controlled hypotension (50 mm Hg). Postocclusive hyperemia 30 minutes after reperfusion was attenuated by up to 48% in cortical gray matter of the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral artery territories on the side of trigeminal ganglionectomy. Similar results were observed for denervation accomplished by direct surgical ablation and by the topical application of capsaicin to a cortical branch of the

Brain natriuretic peptide-like immunoreactive innervation of the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems in the rat.

Atrial natriuretic peptide is a potent dilator of aorta and renal and cerebral arteries and inhibits sympathetic tone in the heart in several mammalian species. We examined the possibility that a molecule related to porcine brain natriuretic peptide (pBNP), which acts at the same receptor sites as atrial natriuretic peptide, might provide an alternative source of natriuretic peptide to the cardiovascular system in the rat. An antiserum against pBNP demonstrated profuse immunoreactive innervation of the heart, cerebrovascular tree, and renal arteries. pBNP-like immunoreactive fibers ran in bund

[Microsurgical anatomy of the anterior choroidal artery].

Microdissection of 100 hemispheres from human cadavers were performed in order to study the anatomic characteristics of the anterior choroidal artery (AChA). One AChA per hemisphere was found. In 98% of hemispheres the AChA arose from the internal carotid artery (ACI) 2.4mm distal to the origin of the posterior communicating artery (ACoP) and 4.7mm proximal to the carotid bifurcation. One or more perforating branches arose from communicating segment of ACI in 29% of hemispheres. The average calibre of the cisternal portion was 0.9mm and the plexal portion 0.7mm. The most frequent branches of t

Capsular involvement and sensorimotor stroke with posterior cerebral artery territory infarction.

The traditional concept of a clear demarcation between the vascular supply of the internal capsule and the thalamus cannot be regarded as absolute. Two cases of sensorimotor stroke due to posterior cerebral artery territory infarction are described, with CT evidence of internal capsular involvement.

Balloon catheter tamponade in cardiovascular wounds.

From 1980 to 1990, operative balloon catheter tamponade was used in 12 patients with cardiac or vascular injuries from penetrating wounds. In nine patients, a balloon catheter was passed into a bleeding site through a bullet track or proximal artery and inflated with saline or radiologic dye. In two of these patients, the proximal balloon catheter was folded on itself, tied in that position, and left in the patient permanently. In the other seven patients in this group, the balloon catheter was attached to a three-way stopcock and left temporarily inflated postoperatively. These patients were

Transcranial Doppler ultrasonographic assessment of intermittent light stimulation at different frequencies.

Seven normal adult volunteers underwent intermittent photic stimulation at frequencies of 5-60 Hz while their posterior cerebral arteries were monitored using transcranial Doppler ultrasound. Baseline measurements were obtained under conditions of total darkness, and sampling was also done during continuous illumination. Overall variation in mean flow velocity between complete darkness and continuous illumination was 9.8%, but the maximal change (expressed as percentage deviation from baseline) occurred consistently when stimulation was undertaken at frequencies of 10 (21%) and 20 (19%) Hz (p

Isolated bovine cerebral arteries from rostral and caudal regions: distinct responses to adrenoceptor agonists.

Responsiveness to norepinephrine and related agents was compared in isolated bovine anterior cerebral (ACA). middle cerebral (MCA), intracranial internal carotid (ICA), posterior communicating (PCOM), posterior cerebral (PCA) and basilar arteries (BA). Norepinephrine contracted the strips from ACA, MCA and ICA, but relaxed those from PCOM, PCA and BA. In the presence of propranolol, the amine-induced contractions tended to be potentiated in ACA, MCA and ICA, and the relaxations in PCOM, PCA and BA were reversed to contractions. The maximum contractions induced by norepinephrine in ICA and ACA
