The neurological complications of cardiac transplantation.

Review of the neurological complications encountered in 83 patients who received cardiac homografts over a seven-year period leads to the following conclusions: (1) Neurological disorders are common in transplant recipients, occurring in over 50 per cent of patients. (2) Infection was the single most frequent cause of the neurological dysfunction, being responsible for one-third of all CNS complications. (3) The infective organisms were typically those considered to be usually of low pathogenicity: fungi, viruses, protozoa and an uncommon bacterial strain. (4) Other clinical neurological syndr

[Akinetic mutism and bicingular softening. 3 anatomo-clinical cases].

The authors describe three pathological cases of akinetic mutism with, as a common basic lesion, bilateral infarction of the cingulate gyrus secondary to aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery (case n degrees 1), to a huge olfactory meningioma (case n degrees 2), both operated on, and to atheromatous occlusion of the anterior cerebral arterial system (case n degrees 3). These three cases enable a variety of "anterior and waking" akinetic mutism to be described which is unusual enough to be compared with other mesencephalic and diencephalic aspects of this syndrome. It is in fact an akin

[Electroencephalographic findings in vertebro-basilar circulation disorders].

The method of electroencephalography was used for examining 86 patients with clinical signs of vertebrobasilar blood supply disorders and bulbopontine localization of ischemic phenomena. Light to moderate diffuse alterations were found which manifested themselves, on the one hand, in a reduction in tension with a tendency toward desynchronization of the alpha rhythm and, on the other, in interspersed theta waves, sometimes with temporal localization. The determination of the location of the vascular process depends upon both the clinical syndrome and the performance of function tests during th
