Diagnosis and Orthodontic Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome Children-A Systematic Review.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a respiratory illness that is associated with recurrent episodes of either partial or full obstruction of the upper airways, or apnea, among other sleep disorders. This study aims to analyze, through a literature review, whether orthodontic treatment can be a good treatment strategy for this type of disorder. We performed a database search on Scopus, Web of Science, and Pubmed with the keywords OSA(S) and orthodontics to select the papers under evaluation. The criteria for inclusion were articles related to OSA(S) children undergoing an orthodontic tr

Functions and mechanisms of adenosine and its receptors in sleep regulation.

Sleep is a natural and recurring state of life. Long-term insomnia can lead to physical and mental fatigue, inattention, memory loss, anxiety, depression and other symptoms, imposing immense public health and economic burden worldwide. The sleep and awakening regulation system is composed of many nerve nuclei and neurotransmitters in the brain, and it forms a neural network that interacts and restricts each other to regulate the occurrence and maintenance of sleep-wake. Adenosine (AD) is a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and a driver of sleep. Meanwhile, the functions and mechan

Edward O. Bixler, PhD: from the Apollo project and chimpanzees to sleep epidemiology.

What an honor to write about Dr. Edward O. Bixler's contributions to the sleep field. In 1967, Dr. Bixler published a case report on a chimpanzee with implanted brain electrodes while working at an Air Force base in New Mexico. A few years later, in 1971, he published on the sleep effects of flurazepam in individuals with insomnia together with Dr. Anthony Kales, data that he had collected when the Sleep Research & Treatment Center (SRTC) was housed at the University of California Los Angeles. Dr. Bixler, a meticulous scientist, learned from Dr. Kales, a devoted clinician, to study "the whole

Insomnia.

Sleep significantly impacts health. Insomnia, characterized by difficulty with sleep onset, maintenance, and subsequent daytime symptoms, is increasingly prevalent and increases the risk of other medical comorbidities. The pathophysiology involves hyperarousal during non-REM sleep and altered sleep homeostasis. The 3P model explains the development and persistence of insomnia. Assessment is primarily clinical and based on appropriate history while distinguishing from other sleep disorders. "Somnomics" suggests a personalized approach to management. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is

Performance evaluation of portable respiratory polygraphy for assessing sleep bruxism in adults.

BACKGROUND: Polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for sleep bruxism (SB) assessment, it is expensive, not widely accessible, and time-consuming. OBJECTIVE: Given the increasing prevalence of SB, there is a growing need for an alternative, readily available, reliable and cost-effective diagnostic method. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic validity of portable respiratory polygraphy (PRPG) compared with PSG for SB diagnosis. METHODS: One hundred and three subjects underwent simultaneous examinations using PRPG (NOX T3, NOX Medical) and PSG (NOX A1, NOX Medical) in a sleep laborat

Sleep Disorders and Dementia Risk in Older Patients with Kidney Failure: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

KEY POINTS: Older patients with kidney failure who are newly diagnosed with sleep disorders are at higher risk of developing any type of dementia, vascular dementia, and other/mixed types of dementia. For older patients with kidney failure who are diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, positive airway pressure therapy is an intervention that is associated with lower dementia risk. BACKGROUND: Community-dwelling older adults with sleep disorders are at higher risk of developing dementia. Greater than 50% of older patients with kidney failure experience sleep disorders, which may explain their

Validation of Tracheal Sound-Based Respiratory Effort Monitoring for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Diagnosis.

Background: Respiratory effort is considered important in the context of the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), as well as other sleep disorders. However, current monitoring techniques can be obtrusive and interfere with a patient's natural sleep. This study examines the reliability of an unobtrusive tracheal sound-based approach to monitor respiratory effort in the context of OSA, using manually marked respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) signals as a gold standard for validation. Methods: In total, 150 patients were trained on the use of type III cardiorespiratory polygraph

[Sleep disorders during pregnancy].

Pregnancy is associated with a number of physiological changes in a woman's body, which in turn affect the quality and duration of sleep. According to research, insomnia and other sleep disorders are associated with a high risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, as well as postpartum complications. Understanding the mechanisms of sleep disorders during pregnancy is necessary to form an integrated approach in the management of this group of patients. The appointment of medicinal and non-medicinal therapies, as well as general recommendations for lifestyle correction in order to treat sleep disorder

Current and emerging pharmaceutical strategies for the treatment and management of restless legs syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensory-motor sleep disorder that affects up to 13% of adults in the Western world and 2-4% of children. It impairs night sleep with an impact on daily performances and life quality. Thus, moderate-to-severe RLS requires pharmacological treatment. AREAS COVERED: In the present review, which is based on PubMed searches with no time limits, the authors discuss the recommended pharmacotherapy for RLS in addition to other emerging treatment options. The authors provide coverage to the current recommendations for both adults and pediatric patients wi

Insomnia and other sleep disorders in adolescence.

Sleep is important for our survival. Research suggests that getting 'good' sleep is a problem for a proportion of adolescents. The paper advocates for holistic treatment of sleep disorders incorporating expertise from a multidisciplinary team. Much of the assessment and treatment of sleep disorders in adolescents comes from research within adult populations, therefore, there is a need for further research to be completed within the adolescent population to ensure there is a robust evidence base for assessment and treatment of sleep disorders.

Prospective Validation and Usability Evaluation of a Mobile Diagnostic App for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Background/Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) classification relies on polysomnography (PSG) results. Current guidelines recommend the development of clinical prediction algorithms in screening prior to PSG. A recent intuitive and user-friendly tool (OSABayes), based on a Bayesian network model using six clinical variables, has been proposed to quantify the probability of OSA. Our aims are (1) to validate OSABayes prospectively, (2) to build a smartphone app based on the proposed model, and (3) to evaluate app usability. Methods: We prospectively included adult patients suspected of OSA
