A Novel Biomarker for Bell's Palsy: The Pan-Immune-Inflammation Value.

BACKGROUND: The pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) is a recently described novel biomarker obtained from complete blood count parameters. Systemic biomarkers have been investigated in a number of studies aimed at confirming the role of the inflammatory process in the etiology of Bell's palsy (BP) and elucidating the association with prognosis. This study investigated the relationship between PIV and BP. METHODS: Sixty patients aged 18-75 years presenting with BP and 51 healthy controls with similar age and sex profiles were included in this retrospective study. Pan-immune-inflammation value

The Effect of Exanatide on Recovery of the Facial Nerve Crush Injury in the Rat.

BACKGROUND: Exenatide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, has been shown to promote functional recovery and nerve regeneration after nerve crush injury. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exenatide on facial nerve regeneration in traumatic facial paralysis. METHODS: This prospective, randomized animal study included 28 healthy female Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 4 groups of 7 rats each: control group, sham group, 2.5 μg/rat/day exenatide-treated group, and 10 μg/rat/day exenatide-treated group. Exenatide was injected subcutaneously for 14 days. Crush injury wa

Anatomical variation in the cervical branch of the facial nerve: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature on the anatomical variations of the cervical branch of the facial nerve (CBFN). Poor awareness of its anatomy and variations risks intraoperative damage, misdiagnosis of facial nerve injury and undesirable functional and aesthetic outcomes for patients. PURPOSE: To review anatomical studies on the CBFN and synthesise data on its course, innervations and common variations. METHODS: A PRISMA-compliant systematic review of anatomical studies of the cervical branch of the facial nerve was conducted. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Sci

Neuroimaging signatures of facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN).

Facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) is an exceptionally rare condition characterized by progressive facial paresthesia and the subsequent appearance of bulbar symptoms with rostro-caudal motor and sensory deficits sometimes extending to the hand muscles. The pathophysiological understanding of this disorder is very limited. In order to identify patterns of neuroanatomical involvement within the brain, we applied advanced magnetic resonance imaging-based techniques to a group of six patients with the diagnosis of FOSMN, using unbiased analysis techniques with atlas-based volumet

Ringing the Bell's: A Mohs complication worth listening to - A case report.

We report an uncommon case of transient Bell's palsy-like facial paralysis following local anesthesia during Mohs micrographic surgery of the left conchal bowl. The temporary complication resolved spontaneously without intervention and is suspected to have resulted from anesthetic diffusion to the facial nerve via the tragal region. This case highlights the importance of understanding facial nerve anatomy during procedures in the auricular area and the need to counsel patients regarding rare but benign complications of local anesthesia.

Case Report: Facial nerve schwannoma: comprehensive surgical management with nerve reconstruction and hearing rehabilitation.

Facial nerve schwannomas are rare tumors that pose diagnostic and surgical challenges. We report a 17-year-old female with progressive right-sided facial paresis initially misdiagnosed as Bell's palsy. MRI revealed a contrast-enhancing lesion of the facial nerve. She underwent a two-stage surgery: tumor resection via mastoidectomy and hearing rehabilitation, followed by facial nerve reconstruction using masseteric-to-facial nerve transfer and cross-face sural grafting. At nine months postoperatively, facial function improved from House-Brackmann grade V to III, and hearing was preserved. Early

Bell's palsy and dental procedures: A cross-sectional study.

Facial nerve palsy, including Bell's palsy, can occur as a post-dental complication, leading to sudden facial muscle weakness or paralysis. This study reviewed 2543 subjects with idiopathic facial palsy over 10 years, identifying 18 cases (0.70%) of facial paralysis post-dental treatment. All cases involved ipsilateral paralysis, with a mean onset of 3.82 days after treatment. Early diagnosis and management significantly improve prognosis, highlighting the importance of preventive measures and awareness. The identification of facial paralysis as a rare post-dental complication and the finding

Does Electrical Stimulation Therapy Influence Synkinesis in Facial Paralysis? A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Facial paralysis (FP) has aesthetic, social, and functional consequences. While electrical stimulation (ES) shows promise for peripheral nerve injury, its role in FP remains controversial due to concerns about increasing synkinesis. DATA SOURCES: A literature review was conducted using Medline/PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases. REVIEW METHODS: Included studies evaluated the incidence or severity of synkinesis after ES in FP patients. Extracted data included demographics, ES parameters, FP etiology, synkinesis outcomes, and treatment duration. RESULTS: Of 601 identifi

Recurrent Ipsilateral Facial Nerve Paralysis With Numbness in a 12-Year-Old Girl: A Case Report and Review of Pediatric Recurrence.

Bell's palsy, an idiopathic facial nerve paralysis (FNP), causes one-sided facial muscle weakness. Although this is a common clinical diagnosis in the pediatric population, further workup is warranted if FNP is accompanied by atypical symptoms or recurrence as this could be indicative of an alternative diagnosis. We report a 12-year-old female patient who experienced two right-sided episodes of lower motor neuron FNP occurring 10 months apart with atypical sensory nerve involvement. Both episodes resolved with oral corticosteroid therapy, and the patient did not follow up with pediatric neurol

Idiopathic Bell's Palsy in a Patient With Metastatic Lung Adenocarcinoma Receiving Nab-Paclitaxel and Pregabalin: A Rare Clinical Observation.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy drugs are known to cause peripheral neuropathy of varying severity. However, Bell's palsy, which is an acute lower motor neuron facial nerve palsy, is rarely observed in oncology patients receiving chemotherapy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of Bell's palsy in a 74-year-old male metastatic lung adenocarcinoma patient while on treatment with nab-paclitaxel and pregabalin. Temporal association, diagnostic workup, and management are discussed in this case report to highlight the importance of differentiating neurological adverse effects in cancer therapy. CONCLUSI

Pontine Hemorrhage Mimicking Bell's Palsy: Isolated Facial Nerve Palsy-A Case Report.

Bell's palsy, the most common cause of idiopathic peripheral facial palsy, is typically attributed to viral reactivation; however, rare cases due to cerebrovascular disease must always be considered in the differential diagnosis. We report the case of a 75-year-old man with poorly controlled hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and a history of smoking who presented with progressive left-sided facial paralysis over four days. Initially suspected to have Bell's palsy due to the lower motor neuron pattern and gradual onset, further neuroimaging revealed a different etiology. T2∗-weighted MRI showed

Contemporary pharmacological strategies for acute peripheral facial palsy: a narrative review with clinical decision considerations.

Acute peripheral facial palsy (APFP) sometimes known as Bell's palsy is a common neurological condition and is marked by the acute onset of lower motor weakness on one side of the face. Whereas spontaneous recovery is widespread, there is a significant rate of incomplete recovery, synkinesis, or enduring functional and psychosocial disability of patients. The past decades witnessed the improvement of the diagnostic and therapeutic plans, particularly the pharmacological and adjunctive ones, due to the developments in pathophysiological and clinical trials and the creation of guidelines.
