Deficiency of coagulation factor VIII in hemophilia A disrupts clotting and prolongs bleeding. While the current mainstay of therapy is infusion of factor VIII concentrates, inhibitor antibodies often render these ineffective. Because preclinical evidence shows electrical vagus nerve stimulation accelerates clotting to reduce hemorrhage without precipitating systemic thrombosis, we reasoned it might reduce bleeding in hemophilia A. Using two different male murine hemorrhage and thrombosis models, we show vagus nerve stimulation bypasses the factor VIII deficiency of hemophilia A to decrease bl

Desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) is a molecular imaging method that can be used to elucidate the small-molecule composition of tissues and map their spatial information using two-dimensional ion images. This technique has been used to investigate the molecular profiles of variety of tissues, including within the central nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. To our knowledge, this technique has yet to be applied to tissues of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Data generated from such analyses are expected to advance the characterizatio

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) has grown rapidly compared to that of other neurological disorders. Acupuncture has been used to address the complex symptoms of PD. Recently, similarities in the mechanisms of action between acupuncture and neuromodulation have received considerable attention. This review aims to summarize the evidence regarding these similarities to suggest potential role of acupuncture in the treatment of PD.
METHODS: The literature from two electronic databases, PubMed and Google Scholar, was searched using the search terms 'Acupuncture', 'Parkinson's

BACKGROUND: Long-term survival in paediatric epilepsy is incompletely characterised. A better understanding of treatment effects on mortality in paediatric patients with drug-resistant epilepsy is needed for health-care decision making. We aimed to compare the long-term survival rates associated with antiseizure medications only, antiseizure medications plus vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and antiseizure medications plus cranial epilepsy surgery in paediatric patients with drug-resistant epilepsy using a large national administrative database in the USA.
METHODS: In this observational cohort

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders. Antiseizure medication (ASM) is the first choice of treatment, however, 30% of epilepsy patients are drug-resistant. For these patients, neuromodulation can be an option, especially when epilepsy surgery is not possible or did not lead to seizure freedom. Epilepsy is associated with reduced quality of life (QoL), which heavily depends on seizure control. The most recent Cochrane reviews have shown that vagus nerve stimulation and deep brain stimulation of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus, lead to a responder ra

INTRODUCTION: Many causes lead to sympathetic-vagus imbalance, which promotes the development of hypertension and accelerates the process of target organ damage. Many studies have shown that exercise training and heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback can improve diseases caused by autonomic nerve dysfunction, such as hypertension. Based on these theories and the Yin-Yang balance theory of traditional Chinese medicine and Cannon's homeostasis theory, we have developed an assessment system of autonomic nerve regulation system and a harmony instrument. In this study, we aimed to find a new way

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent across Europe. While evidence-based treatments exist, many people with MDD have their condition undetected and/or untreated. This study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of reducing treatment gaps using a modeling approach.
METHODS: A decision-tree model covering a 27-month time horizon was used. This followed a care pathway where MDD could be detected or not, and where different forms of treatment could be provided. Expected costs pertaining to Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, and the UK were calculated and qualit

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological human diseases, affecting 1% of the population in all age groups. Despite the availability of over 25 anti-seizure medications (ASMs), which are approved in most industrialized countries, approximately 30% of epilepsy patients still experience seizures that are resistant to these drugs. Since ASMs target only limited number of neurochemical mechanisms, drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) is not only an unmet medical need, but also a formidable challenge in drug discovery.
AIM: In this review, we examine recently appr

The vagus nerve is a major pathway in the body that is responsible for regulating the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, which plays an important role in mood disorders including anxiety and depression. Fluoxetine, also known as Prozac, is widely used to treat depression. Nevertheless, there are few studies on the vagus nerve-mediated action of fluoxetine. In this study, we aimed to investigate the vagus nerve-dependent actions of fluoxetine in mice with restraint stress-induced or antibiotics-induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors. Compared to sham operation, vagotomy alo

The aim of this article is to utilize ultrasound to evaluate the normal cross-sectional area (CSA)of the vagus nerve (VN) in the carotid sheath. This study included 86 VNs in 43 healthy subjects (15 men, 28 women); mean age 42.1 years and mean body mass index 26.2 kg/m2. For each subject, the bilateral VNs were identified by US at the anterolateral neck within the common carotid sheaths. One radiologist obtained 3 separate CSA measurements for each of the bilateral VNs with complete transducer removal between each measurement. Additionally, for each participant, demographic information of age

BACKGROUND: After esophagectomy for esophageal and esophagogastric cancer, more than half of patients have lost > 10% of their body weight at 12 months. In most cases, the gastric remnant is used for reconstruction after esophagectomy. One of the most serious nutritional complications of this technique is delayed gastric emptying caused by gastric remnant mobilization and denervation of the vagus nerve. The aim of the PYloroplasty versus No Intervention in GAstric REmnant REconstruction after Oesophagectomy (PYNI-GAREREO) trial is to analyze the clinical outcome of modified Horsley pyloroplast

The brain is tuned to integrate food-derived signals from the gut, allowing it to accurately adjust behavioral and physiological responses in accordance with nutrient availability. A key element of gut-to-brain communication is the relay of neural cues via peripheral sensory neurons (PSN) which harbor functionally specialized peripheral endings innervating the muscular and mucosal layers of gastrointestinal (GI) tract organs. In this review, we detail the properties of GI tract innervating PSN and describe their roles in regulating satiation and glucose metabolism in response to food consumpti

PURPOSE: The need for thyroid surgery in the elderly is rising due to an ageing population, the liberal use of imaging studies, and the increasing prevalence of thyroid nodules and cancer with age. Data on surgical outcomes in this population are scarce and conflicting, but essential to assess safety of short-stay surgery. This study aims to compare surgical outcomes by age.
METHODS: All consecutive patients undergoing thyroid surgery from January 2010 to July 2021 in a large tertiary referral centre for endocrine surgery were included in this surgical cohort. The indication for surgery, surg

INTRODUCTION: Children with cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) frequently suffer from disabling abdominal pain and comorbidities that impair quality of life. A noninvasive, auricular percutaneous electrical nerve field stimulation (PENFS) device is shown to be effective for abdominal pain in children with disorders of gut-brain interaction. We aimed to determine the effects of PENFS on pain, common comorbidities, and quality of life in pediatric CVS.
METHODS: Children aged 8-18 years with drug-refractory CVS were enrolled in a prospective, open-label study receiving 6 consecutive weeks of PENFS.

The human gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem made of trillions of microorganisms. The composition can be affected by diet, metabolism, age, geography, stress, seasons, temperature, sleep, and medications. The increasing evidence about the existence of a close and bi-directional correlation between the gut microbiota and the brain indicates that intestinal imbalance may play a vital role in the development, function, and disorders of the central nervous system. The mechanisms of interaction between the gut-microbiota on neuronal activity are widely discussed. Several potential pathways are i

BACKGROUND: The use of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) during endoscopic thyroidectomy has not been fully explored, with limited studies focusing solely on the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and neglecting the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN). This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of IONM in two endoscopic thyroidectomy techniques, namely the transoral and bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent endoscopic thyroidectomy with IONM and compared the outcomes between those who underwent different su

The sub-diaphragmatic vagus innervates various organs involved in the control of glucose homeostasis including the liver, pancreas and the intestines. In the current study, we investigated the effect of acute electrical stimulation of the anterior trunk of the sub-diaphragmatic vagus on glucose fluxes in anaesthetized adult male rats. After overnight fast, rats underwent either vagus nerve stimulation (VNS+, n = 11; rectangular pulses at 5 Hz, 1.5 mA, 1 msec pulse width) or sham stimulation (VNS-; n = 11) for 120 min under isoflurane anesthesia. Before stimulation, the rats received an i.v. bo
