Prion diseases are fatal neurologic disorders that can be transmitted by blood transfusion. The route for neuroinvasion following exposure to infected blood is not known. Carotid bodies (CBs) are specialized chemosensitive structures that detect the concentration of blood gasses and provide feedback for the neural control of respiration. Sensory cells of the CB are highly perfused and densely innervated by nerves that are synaptically connected to the brainstem and thoracic spinal cord, known to be areas of early prion deposition following oral infection. Given their direct exposure to blood a

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a rare facial pain syndrome, which in more rare cases can be associated with syncope. We present the outcome of a case report that combines this rare association that received medical therapy with anti-epileptic medication and permanent dual chamber pacemaker implantation. In this case, syncope episodes were associated with both vasodepressor and cardioinhibitory reflex syncope types. The patient found relief from syncope, hypotension, and pain after initiation of anti-epileptic therapy. Although a dual chamber pacemaker was implanted, the pacemaker interrogation

INTRODUCTION: Microvascular decompression (MVD) is an efficacious neurosurgical intervention for patients with medically intractable neurovascular compression syndromes. However, MVD may occasionally cause life-threatening or altering complications, particularly in patients unfit for surgical operations. Recent literature suggests a lack of association between chronological age and surgical outcomes for MVD. The Risk Analysis Index (RAI) is a validated frailty tool for surgical populations (both clinical and large database). The present study sought to evaluate the prognostic ability of frailt

Interpreting the relationship between different taste function tests of different stimuli, such as chemical and electrical stimulation, is still poorly understood. This study aims to analyze visually as well as quantitatively how to interpret the relationship of results between taste function tests using different stimuli. Patients who underwent the whole mouth test and Electrogustometry (EGM) at a tertiary medical center between August 2018 and December 2018 were reviewed retrospectively with electronic medical records. Of the 110 patients, a total of 86 adults who self-reported that their ta

INTRODUCTION: Relapsing polychondritis is a rare, immune-mediated disease characterised by inflammation of cartilaginous structures. Auricular chondritis, sparing the fatty lobule, is the most typical feature, followed by nose and laryngotracheal involvement. Albeit rare, neurologic involvement is reported with relapsing polychondritis. Cranial nerve involvement is the most frequent neurologic manifestation and is probably due to an underlying vasculitic process. Approximately one-third of relapsing polychondritis patients can overlap with other systemic diseases, including other autoimmune co

BACKGROUND: The neck has been implicated as a potential generator of symptoms such as dizziness and headache in individuals with persistent symptoms post concussion. Anatomically, the neck could also be a potential trigger for autonomic or cranial nerve symptoms. The glossopharyngeal nerve which innervates the upper pharynx is one possible autonomic trigger that might be affected by the upper cervical spine.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This is a case series of three individuals with persistent post-traumatic headache (PPTH) and symptoms of autonomic dysregulation who also had signs of intermittent glos

OBJECTIVES: To compare taste changes after transoral robotic surgery (TORS) to taste changes in healthy controls.
METHODS: Oropharyngeal cancer patients receiving TORS and healthy controls were recruited. Participants underwent posterolateral and whole-mouth psychophysical taste testing (identification, intensity, and hedonics) at baseline and at 2 weeks postoperatively (patients) or follow-up (controls). Surgeons reported suspension time and glossopharyngeal nerve injury (GNI) based on the identification and sacrifice of the nerve. A Clinical Global Impression (CGI) of taste symptoms was com

Collet-Sicard syndrome (CSS) is the unilateral palsy of the cranial nerves (CN) IX, X, XI, and XII. To our knowledge, no review describes the characteristics of patients diagnosed with CSS. Therefore, this review aims to collect and describe all cases in the literature labeled as CSS. We performed a scoping review of the literature and conducted a database search in Embase and PubMed. We included articles and abstracts with case reports or case series of patients with CSS diagnosis. We classified the cases into two groups: "CSS", referring to patients presenting exclusively with IX-XII nerve i

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the differences in the effectiveness of percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation (PRT) and microvascular decompression (MVD) in treating glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN).
METHODS: Medical records of patients were reviewed to investigate their baseline characteristics and immediate postoperative prognosis. Long-term outcomes of these patients were obtained through telephone interviews. Visual analog scale (VAS) and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scores at 1 day and 1, 4, 12, 24, and 48 weeks after surgery were compared between the MVD and

INTRODUCTION: Microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery is the first choice treatment for refractory cranial neuralgia secondary to vascular compression. Simultaneous neuralgia of two cranial nerves is extremely rare. We describe a case of concomitant refractory trigeminal (TN) and glossopharyngeal (GN) neuralgia secondary to neurovascular crossover, treated surgically at the same time.
CASE REPORT: 65-year-old woman with right TN (initially V2-V3) since 2004 with regular control with carboxamides. Seventeen years later, paroxysms worsened in V2-V3, also appearing in V1 and in the territory o

BACKGROUND: Microvascular decompression (MVD) is already the preferred surgical treatment for medically refractory neurovascular compression syndromes (NVC) such as hemifacial spasm (HFS), trigeminal neuralgia (TN), and glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN). Endoscopy has significantly advanced surgery and provides enhanced visualization of MVD. The aim of this study is to analyze the efficacy and safety of fully endoscopic microvascular decompression (E-MVD) for the treatment of HFS, TN, and GPN, as well as to present our initial experience.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective case series i

It is important for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons to be familiar with the various neuropathic facial pain disorders and their appropriate treatments. Neuropathic pain can be characterized by the nature of the pain experienced by patients; episodic or continuous. Episodic neuropathic pain disorders include trigeminal neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. Continuous neuropathic pain disorders compromise of disorders such as idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, postherpetic neuralgia, central post-stroke pain, and complex regional pain syndrome. Various forms of pharmacologic management exist f

Cystic medial degeneration (Gsell-Erdheim syndrome, cystic medial necrosis) is considered to be a nonspecific histological manifestation of a group of diseases characterized by degenerative changes in the media, affecting primarily the aorta and adjacent branches, which leads to destruction of the vessel wall, followed by its expansion and, possibly, rupture. The authors describe a case of a 65-year-old female patient with a neurovascular conflict of the three cranial nerves with dolichoectatic basilar artery due to cystic medial degeneration. As a result, the patient has clinical manifestatio

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) is an uncommon facial pain syndrome and is characterized by paroxysms of excruciating pain in the distributions of the auricular and pharyngeal branches of cranial nerves IX and X. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia characterized by otalgia alone is rare. Herein, the authors analyzed 2 patients with GPN with otalgia as the main clinical manifestation. The clinical features and prognosis of this rare group of patients with GPN were discussed. They both presented with paroxysmal pain in the external auditory meatus and preoperative magnetic resonance imaging suggested th

The clinical features of Parkinson's disease (PD) include tremors and rigidity. However, paresthesia has not drawn clinical attention. PD involves the whole body and begins with gastrointestinal lesions, which do not start in the midbrain substantia nigra, but from the beginning of the medulla oblongata of the glossopharyngeal nerve nuclei, to the motor nerve dorsal nucleus of the vagus nerve, to the pons and midbrain, and finally to the neocortex. The human eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body perceive the external world. (1) Visual impairment in patients with PD can be easily confused with senil

Type 1 leprosy reactions (T1LRs) occur mainly in patients with borderline leprosy and an unstable immune status. The main symptoms of T1LRs include aggravated skin lesions and nerve damage. Nerve damage involving the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves causes dysfunction of the nose, pharynx, larynx, and even the esophagus, which are innervated by these nerves. Here, we report a case of upper thoracic esophageal paralysis caused by vagus nerve involvement in a patient with T1LRs. Although infrequent, this serious emergency merits attention.

To explore pharyngeal sensory function by current perception threshold (CPT) measurement in paresthetic pharynx. In total, 58 healthy participants and 66 patients with pharyngeal paresthetic symptoms underwent CPT evaluation. Pharyngeal paresthesia (n = 66) was classified into three categories based on aetiologies: six cases with pain in pharynx; 34 neuropathic patients with glossopharyngeal nerve and/or vagus nerve or recurrent laryngeal nerve injury; and 26 patients with globus pharyngeus. CPT measurements were obtained from bilateral palatoglossal arch and tongue base at 2000, 250 and 5 Hz

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a rare disease whose initial treatment is pharmacological. When medical therapy is not effective, different surgical options are available including stereotactic radiosurgery, microvascular decompression or nerve section. It is reported a case of a 26-year-old female with glossopharyngeal neuralgia and Chiari malformation. This rare type of neuralgia sometimes is associated with an abnormality of the cranio-cervical junction. It was performed a posterior fossa expansion with duraplasty and microvascular decompression. The patient showed a complete disappearance of
