Primary central nervous system T cell lymphoma involving multiple brain and spinal cord lesions with SETD2 mutation.

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare extranodal lymphoma, with diffuse large B cell lymphoma accounting for most cases. T cell variants are uncommon and associated with poor outcomes. We report a case of primary CNS T cell lymphoma with simultaneous brain and spinal cord involvement. A 37-year-old Japanese man presented with impaired consciousness, and brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple contrast-enhancing parenchymal lesions. Histopathological examination of a brain biopsy specimen demonstrated medium- to large-sized atypical lymphoid cells, leading to a di

Orbital Nerve Enlargement: A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE: This narrative review summarizes the causes of infraorbital and frontal nerve enlargement and their radiological features on magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of the literature, including PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar in May 2025. Studies were included if they reported a case of infraorbital and/or frontal nerve enlargement with magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography correlation and specified the underlying etiology. This was supplemented by a series of cases to illustrate char

[Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) and the (non-glaucomatous) optic nerve].

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive, reliable, repeatable exam. As opposed to fluorescein angiography, OCTA allows analysis of the capillary bed without interference from diffusion phenomena. It is now widely used for both the diagnosis and ongoing care of retinal and choroidal diseases. However, its use is still limited for evaluation of the optic nerve. Recently, new data quantification software can add value to macular and papillary vascularization images. This review details OCTA results in the most important optic nerve conditions, whether acquired or congeni

Pou4f1 Defines a Subgroup of Type I Spiral Ganglion Neurons and Is Necessary for Normal Inner Hair Cell Presynaptic Ca2+ Signaling.

Acoustic signals are relayed from the ear to the brain via spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) that receive auditory information from the cochlear inner hair cells (IHCs) and transmit that information to the cochlear nucleus of the brainstem. Physiologically distinct classes of SGNs have been characterized by their spontaneous firing rate and responses to sound and those physiological distinctions are thought to correspond to stereotyped synaptic positions on the IHC. More recently, single-cell profiling has identified multiple groups of SGNs based on transcriptional profiling; however, correlation

Central Nervous System Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma Manifesting as Lymphomatosis Cerebri That Was Misdiagnosed as Neuro-Behçet's Disease: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Lymphomatosis cerebri (LC) is a unique form of primary central nerves lymphoma (PCNSL), which presents as diffuse infiltration of lymphoma cells characteristically in the white matter rather than tumor formation. However, the involvement of central nervous system (CNS) is unclear because of the lack of contrast enhancement. CASE PRESENTATION: We treated a 53-year-old woman with LC and brain lesions resembling neuro-Behcet's disease. She had a past history of acute uveitis and current symptoms of somnolence and gait disturbances progressing for one month. Cranial magnetic resonance

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the eighth cranial nerve arising without prior irradiation.

OBJECTIVE Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) of the eighth cranial nerve (CN) are exceedingly rare. To date the literature has focused on MPNSTs occurring after radiation therapy for presumed benign vestibular schwannomas (VSs), while MPNSTs arising without prior irradiation have received little attention. The objectives of the current study are to characterize the epidemiology, clinical presentation, disease course, and outcome using a large national cancer registry database and a systematic review of the English literature. Additionally, a previously unreported case is present

Temporal coupling between specifications of neuronal and macular fates of the inner ear.

The inner ear is a complex organ comprised of various specialized sensory organs for detecting sound and head movements. The timing of specification for these sensory organs, however, is not clear. Previous fate mapping results of the inner ear indicate that vestibular and auditory ganglia and two of the vestibular sensory organs, the utricular macula (UM) and saccular macula (SM), are lineage related. Based on the medial-lateral relationship where respective auditory and vestibular neuroblasts exit from the otic epithelium and the subsequent formation of the medial SM and lateral UM in these

Trigeminal isolated sensory neuropathy (TISN) and FOSMN syndrome: despite a dissimilar disease course do they share common pathophysiological mechanisms?

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with bilateral trigeminal hypoesthesia may go on to have trigeminal isolated sensory neuropathy, a benign, purely trigeminal neuropathy, or facial-onset sensory motor neuronopathy (FOSMN), a malignant life-threatening condition. No diagnostic criteria can yet differentiate the two conditions at their onset. Nor is it clear whether the two diseases are distinct entities or share common pathophysiological mechanisms. METHODS: Seeking pathophysiological and diagnostic information to distinguish these two conditions at their onset, in this neurophysiological and mo

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the trigeminal nerve: a systematic review of 36 cases.

OBJECT: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are a rare form of malignancy arising from the Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. MPNSTs of the trigeminal nerve are exceptionally rare, with only a handful of reports in the literature. These tumors are typically very aggressive, resulting in significant patient morbidity and a generally grim prognosis. Most current reports suggest that radical resection with radiation therapy offers the best benefit. In this study, the authors systematically reviewed the world English-language literature on MPNSTs of the trigeminal nerve to analyze t

Lmx1a maintains proper neurogenic, sensory, and non-sensory domains in the mammalian inner ear.

Lmx1a is a LIM homeodomain-containing transcription factor, which is required for the formation of multiple organs. Lmx1a is broadly expressed in early stages of the developing inner ear, but its expression is soon restricted to the non-sensory regions of the developing ear. In an Lmx1a functional null mutant, dreher (dr(J)/dr(J)), the inner ears lack a non-sensory structure, the endolymphatic duct, and the membranous labyrinth is poorly developed. These phenotypes are consistent with Lmx1a's role as a selector gene. More importantly, while all three primary fates of the inner ear - neural, se

Dysautonomia rhinitis: associated otolaryngologic manifestations and characterization based on autonomic function tests.

CONCLUSIONS: Dysautonomia is a multisystem disorder. Beside the nasal symptoms, some otolaryngological disorders may be explained on the basis of autonomic dysfunction. Testing of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) complements the clinical findings and provides objective measurements to substantiate the presence of ANS dysfunction. The term dysautonomia rhinitis may be used to specify this autonomic-related rhinitis. OBJECTIVES: Nonallergic, noninfectious perennial rhinitis is a heterogeneous disorder comprising several pathophysiological entities. This study was designed to objectively inves

The other pigment cell: specification and development of the pigmented epithelium of the vertebrate eye.

Vertebrate retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells are derived from the multipotent optic neuroepithelium, develop in close proximity to the retina, and are indispensible for eye organogenesis and vision. Recent advances in our understanding of RPE development provide evidence for how critical signaling factors operating in dorso-ventral and distal-proximal gradients interact with key transcription factors to specify three distinct domains in the budding optic neuroepithelium: the distal future retina, the proximal future optic stalk/optic nerve, and the dorsal future RPE. Concomitantly with do

Sensory organ generation in the chicken inner ear: contributions of bone morphogenetic protein 4, serrate1, and lunatic fringe.

The chicken inner ear is a remarkably complex structure consisting of eight morphologically distinct sensory organs. Unraveling how these sensory organs are specified during development is key to understanding how such a complex structure is generated. Previously, we have shown that each sensory organ in the chicken inner ear arises independently in the rudimentary otocyst based on Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (Bmp4) expression. Here, we compare the expression of Bmp4 with two other putative sensory organ markers, Lunatic Fringe (L-fng) and chicken Serrate1 (Ser1), both of which are components

Re-treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in 53 patients.

Fifty-three patients with locally recurrent or persistent nasopharyngeal carcinoma were re-treated with megavoltage radiation therapy at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center from 1954 through 1989. The time from initial treatment to re-treatment ranged from 2 to 189 months (median 33 months). Documented local disease was confined to the nasopharynx in 27 patients (Group 1), while in the other 26 patients there was local spread beyond the nasopharynx (Group 2). At the time of re-treatment, nodal disease was present in 27 of the 53 cases. Forty-two patients were re-treated with e
